Sufjan Stevens

Last week, we posted video of Sufjan Stevens teaming up with the National’s Bryce Dessner and indie-affiliated composer Nico Muhly to perform a gorgeous new song called “Venus.” As it turns out, that song is just one piece of a larger collaboration that these three guys are working on. They’re putting together Planetarium Songs, a song-cycle that’s, in Sufjan’s own words, about “our solar system.” Last night, they got together again in Amsterdam to play the city’s Muziektheater, backed by string and trombone sections. Watch fan-made video of them performing four of the songs they’ve written in honor of various planets below.

No word yet on any sort of release, but it’ll be interesting to learn whether these guys consider Pluto to be an actual planet or not.

  1. Hey, he hasn’t finished his 50 states project and now he’s doing all of the planets? Sounds a little ADHD to me.

  2. This is incredible. We need a studio recording of this piece. Dutch – don’t let us down.

  3. This is the bees knees. Hopefully we see an album for this material.
