When Pavement first announced their reunion we told you that Matador noted a “details-to-be-determined compilation album planned for release sometime in 2010.” Well, as the guys continue adding dates to said reunion tour, they’re also offering up some more info re: the comp. As Spiral Stairs noted:
Via NME:
There’s talk of doing a best of, with some really cool outtakes on that … The very first radio show that Pavement ever did has never been released. I don’t think anyone’s heard it, so we’ll put that out there sometime.
You should look for it around the time of those aforementioned reunion gigs. That’s called a product tie-in. The bigger issue: What should be on a “best of” Pavement compilation? I’m not talking about rarities, more the essential tracks for a Pavement primer. Like for people who’ve never heard “Summer Babe (Winter Version),” “Stop Breathin’,” or “Frontwards” or a huge etc.

I can’t possibly decide. Too many songs to choose from. I’m more excited about those rare alternate outtakes more than anything else. That first radio show is definitely something to look forward to.

BOOO
Pavement is my favorite band, but I wish that they weren’t getting back together, and I double wish that they weren’t going to make a best of.
We all know what songs will be on a best of album, so instead here’s a few songs that definitely won’t be on it that fucking rule:
baptist blacktick
cherry area
no tan lines
fillmore jive
kris kraft
the hexx
easily fooled
billie
ann don’t cry
shoot the singer
I’m get that basically all the members of pavement beside SM have fallen on hard times, and its their prerogative to reunite and get paid, but for being a seriously cool band, reuniting is a seriously lame move.
Here’s a list of the kind of accessible songs I expect would make up the Greatest Hits comp:
Summer Babe (Winter Version)
Trigger Cut/Wounded-Kite At :17
Here
Frontwards
Elevate Me Later

the hexx, gold soundz, and slipstream are magical…simply magical.
i wonder if they’d sue if i put out a new song that contains sampled Pavement…i guess i’ll start worrying if more than three people hear it
It would have to be a double album. There are too many awesome pavement songs to fit on one CD.

Am I really the first to suggest Box Elder?? (props for Give It A Day and Harness Your Hopes suggestions though!)
I just hope it contains Box Elder and Painted Solders!!!
One Matador reissue I love is the Underwater Moonlight one…the And How It Got There…disc they sound great for for being so loose…the songs are being born right before your eyes…
It should come with a disc of nothing but covers of ’80s techno pop hits.
I am more interested in the outtakes and the banter…Any Pavement fan with a brain could come up with a tracklist for a greatest hits comp…would prob consist of all the video tracks plus “Summer Babe (Winter Version)”…?
Hopefully some of the more “out there” tunes from Westing by Musket and Sextant like:
You’re killing me
Internal K-Dart
Maybe Maybe
Baptist Blacktick
From Now On
Home.
Also, the entire Water, Domestic EP…especially Feed em to the Linden Lions.
Slanted and Enchanted has gotta give up Fame Throwa and Here.
After that, you can keep your post Slanted Pavement to yourself.
So Nyahh
Here’s one vote for Unseen Power of the Picket Fence.
But the one commenter was right, their songs always work better within the context of their original albums, not what you would refer to as a “singles band”.
ROYAL TRUX!!!
These are the tracks that should be on a Pavement best of. All 24 would fit on to an 80 minute CD.

5. Here
6. Two States
7. Cut Your Hair

21. Spit On Stranger
22. Major Leagues
23. Billie
24. Carrot Rope
RE: Out-Takes…
On a few of the 2-disc reissues, they used the “extended” versions of some b-sides, and left off the original versions. I feel that these original versions should be included on a “Rarities” disc because some of those songs simply are not how they are usually remembered.
Embassy Row and Blue Hawaiian… that whole second half of Brighten the Corners is amazing. and the first half, rally, haha
“The Unseen Power of the Picket Fence” – How can you not love a Pavement song about REM??

Nothing off Terror Twilight.
I hope.
Pavment should have broken uo before they put thier name on that piece of garbage.
Terrible, Terrible album.
Any song of their first three albums could be on this comp.
-Farmer Ted
here is a song so rare no one mentioned this gem: so stark you’re a skyscraper. a paean to smoking! definitely my favorite pavement song. a lost b-side.
Hotel California. Here Comes your Man. Message in a Bottle. Barf.
