I don’t want to pick on Shandi (the gawky Walgreen’s clerk from Kansas City). I don’t care that she once burglarized a bulk candy store. But sometimes she so just asks for it. For example, last night’s episode (my girlfriend made me watch it, I swear)…
Shandi cheats on her boyfriend and he’s really broken up about it. Nothing funny about that. She blames it on “testosterone deprivation” and her boy Eric agrees to stay in the relationship only if she busts her ass really hard to get that contract (i.e., “I can’t believe you FUCKED ANOTHER GUY you stupid model slut, but if you win this TV competition, I better see some cash money!”).
This was allegedly the big draw of this episode: The America’s Next Top Model “hot tub orgy” where Shandi fucks a stranger. But there was BY FAR a better moment that you might’ve missed. Thanks to eagle-eyed Eliza Jane for pointing this out…
While shopping alone in Milan, Shandi comes across an item of clothing she likes. The vendor tries to sell it to her, but she doesn’t speak Italian. SO SHE STARTS SPEAKING ENGLISH WITH AN ITALIAN ACCENT. “No, it’s-a … toooo-beeeg,” she explains to him. WTF? Shandi, if you don’t speak Italian, speaking English with an Italian accent is not a passable alternative.
Between this show and Real World Season 32, I’m beginning to realize Tuesday night has become the home for America’s dumbest reality shows. Don’t get me wrong — they’re entertaining — but they’re dumb. You get dumber just watching them. They make even Paula Abdul seem clever.

You all need to take another point of view. Shandi was not always considered beautiful. She was the black sheep. The person in the shadows. No one took a second glance at her. Although she is really skinny, at least she is naturally so. Yoanna looks really scary in some of her Mercedes Benz Fashion Week and ATM 2 Finale Party photos with her shoulder blades popping out and her still loose flesh (Image #3192984 and 3125659 at gettyimages.com). She has a beautiful face but her skin is somehow meant to be on a fuller body. I don’t know why she always looks so wrinkled and her skin so thin in pictures…it just looks unhealthy. To “Jay”…sweetie, there’s a reason they don’t resemble Tyra Banks. That’s because they aren’t her. We all have different beauty ideals. What you find attractive another person may find unattractive, and vice versa. Personally, I don’t think Tyra is pretty at all. I’m not saying she’s ugly, she does have a good body & a striking ‘model’ look, but she certainly can’t be called pretty, IMHO. It has nothing to do with her race or color. She is a highly successful supermodel, is she not? Particularly in an arena where women of color are often marginalized. There’s nothing wrong with a woman being naturally thin & small-breasted. Curves are definitely nice to have, but in the real world, everyone is shaped differently. Not every woman is meant to have a huge ass or huge breasts, just as not every woman can be naturally slim. Models, in particular, are not noted for being curvy. Tyra & Emme are exceptions to this because they are both tall and fairly large-framed. So modeling is ideal for a woman who is tall yet has small breasts & delicate bone structure because that is the preferred standard (i.e. Shandi). In the Black culture, it is the norm for large women to be considered attractive, while amongst Whites a slim hourglass figure is better. I see nothing wrong with either Shandi or Yoanna, but that’s just me. They’re both attractive, different-looking girls. Yoanna is not White, she’s of Latin heritage, & prior to losing weight she had a great healthy body. Shandi may be pale with sharp features, she may be skinny, but she’s still a very pretty girl in my opinion. She has the look of a classic model & she seems sweet. She isn’t phony or fake. None of the obnoxious attitude that the others seem to have. So she’s had a few blunders & errors. Okay…but haven’t we all?

i was a huge fan of shandi, & i lost all respect for her when she cheated on eric. shandi is a hoe, plain & simple. she violated her boyfriend’s trust & betrayed his love. she humiliated him & her family in front of millions of people. the fact that “we all make mistakes” or “she had a bad childhood” or “she’s a really nice girl” doesnt change the fact that she did what she did-it doesnt make it any less wrong. neither does the fact that she felt bad afterwards. she had a choice- to live with integrity, or not to. she chose not to. i have sympathy for people who get cancer, or for people who starve in wartorn countries. i have no sympathy for shandi.
i think from the start, shandi had a tendency to cheat. in one of the first episodes, the girls went into a club and she already kinda flirted there. also when her boyfriend went to accompany a friend who was a single mom to the movies, shandi went bonkers. they say that the more a person is the jealous type, the more they themselves are prone to cheating, that’s cuz they know that they themselves, when put in the other’s situation, will probably cheat, or at least will think of cheating.
i think shandi is real model material but i really hated shandi for that episode. but at least she taught me a lesson. just the afternoon before i watched the episode, my boyfriend got angry at me for always snapping up the offers of my guy co-workers for free grub. and that evening, my mom was telling a cautionary tale of a guy being close pals with a married co-worker. we should never tempt fate.
it also made me think about my boyfriend’s loyalty. if my guy cheated on me, i’ll never take him back like shandi’s boyfriend did for her. his being a jealous type makes me wanna reassess if i really want him. as i said, shandi already had cheating tendencies. Shandi is my favorite out of all four seasons of ANTM. I was disappointed when she returned to Walgreens, but now I know she is pursuing modeling. But no matter what she does with her life I wish her the best!

I just want to defend shandi’s italian english. My mum went to Bangkok once and tried to get to the hotel, but taxi driver couldn’t understand the name(it was an English name)until she said it with thai accent. Apart from that, I am Polish and when I moved to UK I couldn’t understand anyone, because they were using proper accent, which was so different from what i got used to at school. So speaking with Italian accent wasn’t such a bad idea.
A few comments:
1 – People that are bashing on Shandi … keep going on it. People who are defending her, try as you want, but it won’t make a difference. I’ve read through some of the comments, and something has come to my attention. To the defenders of Shandi; none of the people that were attacking her or judging her on her actions, none of those people claimed that they were perfect, or had not made their own mistakes within their lives. And they probably do judge themselves and the mistakes they make. In order to grow as people we need to judge our own mistakes and learn from them.
2 – To those who feel sympathy for Shandi. She put herself in the position to be judged. When going on a television show that will be internationally broadcasted, it would take a very severe act of niavety to not realized that people around the world will be judging you. And there is nothing that is going to, or should stop them. To those who say she has had such a hard life up until this point; who hasn’t had a hard life? Everybody on the planet has hardships that they have gone through, and seeing her hardships … well, comparing to some of the stuff I have seen, her hardships don’t amount to much. I am not saying that I have had a hard life. I’ve worked for what I have. But I have seen beggers in the streets of Xi’an China who, through a combination of frostbite and forced amputations, were missing a large majority of their limbs, and forced to perform street tricks for survival. I feel very little sympathy towards Shandi when I think of those children.
3 – It is my personal opinion and judgement of Shandi that she does not have a very well adjusted moral compass. It is a disgusting act for her to cheat on her boyfriend with some italian model she met only an hour beforehand, justifying that mistake by blaming her impairment. Even when drunk, people have some control over your actions. Sure you may accidently spill your drink, fall over if you’re drunk, but she didn’t seem pass out drunk, and there is a big difference between having an accident, and getting into a bed with some stranger and spreading your legs. I think that she is a huge slut, and it was a shame her boyfriend took her back, even if his actions were just reckless golddigging.
