i’m a die hard modest mouse fan and i love the new album. bands get boring if they don’t move forward. modest mouse is moving forward. i love the lonesome crowded west, it’s one of my all time favorite albums, but that doesn’t mean i want them to put out the same album every couple years.

I hope these “die hard fans” are fans enough to actually pay for the album when it comes out.

    That song sounds like me!

  4. Nothing wrong with a little Modest Mouse you can shake your hips to.

Hey, this is a great song and all. Music Video kinda goes with it but its kinda sad and depressing for some quite crazy reason. Like saying we’re all going eventually. o_O still good do.

  9. I fucking love the new album, die hard means nothing when you’re willing to ignore good music because it’s not within the same spectrum as an artists past work.

    BS. The new album rocks.

I love the new song, but i this is the first MM song ive heard. Ive started listening to a few other songs, and i think i like those a little bit too.

  11. Hummingbird  |   Posted on May 7th, 2004

MM is my fave band. I was shocked when I first heard the new album, but after awhile I started to dig it. A couple of song like Dance Hall and Devils Work Day aren’t really my style, but the quality of Float On, Ocean Breathes Salty, and The View totally make up for it.

ya.. im still not sure wether i like it or not cvompared to all there other cds… but its so hard not to like modest mouse.. float on is souh a fun song.. the video is even way cooler.. ahh what the hey ill buy the cd anyway

Modest Mouse is a pretty good band but u guys gotta listen to some Story of the Year and some Adelphi those r REAL good bands. but yeah float on is still a SWEET song n even tho its the first song i herd from modest mouse but yeah watever floats ur gay boat

  14. charles  |   Posted on May 19th, 2004

Modest mouse’s new album is a great album. It is not on par with their older stuff. That does not change the fact that it is a wonderful album.

  15. Local radio station is offering prizes to anyone who can figure out what Float On sounds like. They swear it sounds like an 80′s song played on the radio back in the day but cannot pinpoint it. I guessed U2′s “Sunday Bloody Sunday” yesterday because of the drum intro but that wasnt it. Some other girl guessed “C’mon Eileen”, another guessed the Talking Heads but all of us were wrong. Any of you got an idea?

  16. garrett  |   Posted on Jun 21st, 2004

I found this page because I just heard u2′s sunday bloody sunday and I wanted to see if anyone else thought it sounded like it.

This song was the first I had heard of Modest Mouse. Personally I like it, however I came to this site after searching for a link to the video after seeing a short snippit of it on TV. Now after seeing the full thing I must say the video plays like something Terry Gilliam (of Monty Python) had a hand in or influenced…

    –Hey Guys–

The new album rules! Every one of their albums rule! If you like any aspect of any song off of the new album, you will like at least 10 of their other songs. Try “3rd Planet” — Lives — Broke– All Night Diner — Trailer Trash — Polar Opposites– Custom Concern–
…Try it all — its all worth it.

  19. josh  |   Posted on Jun 27th, 2004

yeah, you posuers should try actually knowing a little bit about the band before you start having an opinion on whether or not they are good or not! most of you would not even have listened to them at all had mtv not played their video and radio stations didn’t all the sudden start playing their songs! they have been around for 11 years…you act like they are a new band or something!

  20. cindy loo-hoo  |   Posted on Jun 27th, 2004

    (sigh) where’s the love?

  21. josh  |   Posted on Jun 28th, 2004

it’s here man, it just really pisses me off that people act like they are a new band and shit…

  22. What’s with the video? I love the song but I don’t get the video at all

  23. jess  |   Posted on Jun 30th, 2004

I’ll admit, I’m quite the newbie when it comes to MM, but you act like it’s really anyone’s fault for JUST NOW hearing about them. If no one around you knows of this band, how are you to know they exist without exposure from TV or radio? Honestly, who would sit down at a search engine, without knowing the band existed, and say, “Hmm… I think I’ll type in Modest Mouse and see what comes up…” It’s not exactly a name you’d hear every day…
In either case, I haven’t seen the video yet and my graphics card is too old to run it on the computer, but the song is awesome.

  24. josh  |   Posted on Jul 2nd, 2004

man, i used to try and get people to listen to modest mouse. i even bought a bunch of tickets to their show awhile back and brought random people with me so they could get exposure. most people just blew them off cause they’d “never heard of them” or because, as they said, “they suck, that’s why they aren’t on the radio” but now some of the same people act like they like them…i guess i’m just bitter, i don’t know.

  25. Jeff  |   Posted on Jul 4th, 2004

I am a Die Hard U2 fan. I bought this album b/c Float On is really just a nice cover of Sunday Bloody Sunday. The rest of the album isn’t bad either.

  26. SkinLotion  |   Posted on Jul 10th, 2004

i love the new album and the song “float on” its gots some kool music & lyricz but i have to agree… whats up with the video ?!?!? i mean c’mon.. cartoon sheep ? well mtv did say they wouldn’t put modest mouse up til they made a music video o well.. guess they were desperate..

  27. Tina  |   Posted on Jul 28th, 2004

I’ve been a modest mouse fan for over three years now and I love the new album but i absolutely hatet the new modest mouse! I have kept my hopes up and I was utterly disappointed monday night when I went to the modest mouse show in Denver. Pretty much the only songs they played were from the new album for all of the preppy M.F.’s out there who have only heard of modest through MTV. Besides that they only played for an hour. For thirty bucks, someone couldn’t pay me to relive that show! I can’t believe they only played new songs for their new fans who aren’t even willing to dance to and actually enjoy the music . . . modest mouse used to be my favorite band but I now resign as a fan.

  28. Tina  |   Posted on Jul 28th, 2004

And for those of you who are confused about the video . . . you obviously don’t know anything about Modest Mouse. They are the epitomy of random and confusing and that’s exactly what the video displays, it’s actually very fitting and goes against the grain of your typical 1/2 naked humping music video.

  29. dlancaster  |   Posted on Jul 29th, 2004

They ARE a new band…in the MAINSTREAM. Why is it everytime a noname band makes it to the big time all the long time suporters get all uppity and act like they’re the better fans or they’re the cooler fans or they have some greater right to the music? Funny people.

The only reason I found this website was because I was looking for some varying opinions on the video for “Float On”, and just about every web forum, blog, somebodies look-at-me-im-special-website, someone has a corn cob up thier butt about this issue. “ooh, Im a true fan because I knew them when they were all born!!!” “So nyahh nyahh nyahh!!” “You dont get it”. “Only I have a true understanding of this band!” blah blah blah BLAAAAHHH!!!

I have one response for these people. STFU! And enjoy the music.

  30. Mogul  |   Posted on Aug 19th, 2004

    Hi,
I spent a few weeks in SoCal earlier this year and I enjoyed that piece of music very much. It looks like their album hasn’t been released in Europe yet has it?
    Mog

  31. josh  |   Posted on Aug 24th, 2004

Yeah, that’s some bullshit! I saw them about 3 years ago and they played songs from like every album, it was one of my favorite shows too! They still are my favorite band, it’s just kind of disappointing that they would only play from the new album to please the MTV fans. And you were right about the video, it fits them perfect! I mean, no one understands Isaac Brock, that’s just the way he wants it I think. I mean, who else have you ever heard of writing a song that casually mentions premature ejaculation?? I figured out what my problem is with MTV modest mouse fans…they only talk about that one song, float on, and any other one that the radio plays…Someone will say, have you ever heard of modest mouse, i’m like…bitch! Then they are like, i love that float on song, it is so cool. Not only do they not listen to other albums, but they don’t even listen to the other songs on the album, not until the radio plays them anyways…

  32. Alexa  |   Posted on Sep 1st, 2004

I love how everyone is fighting over who has rights to Modest Mouse and saying “I know them now” and “I knew them then.” That’s pointless, the point is that the indie crowd that the band usually played to is now infuriated because the music has become mainstream and now it’s not something they can use to prove their musical knowledge. Hey, this happens to *every* good band, people. Who knew the Postal Service a year ago? I know that I sure feel like I had them swept out from under me but on the other hand I feel happy for them. These bands deserve the credit that they are now getting and why begrudge people the right to listen to amazing music? It’s not their fault that they didn’t listen to it before so just think before you bitch them out about being new to a band about all of the times that someone has introduced *you* to a new sound. God, music wasn’t meant for all of you misunderstood geniuses.
    it’s over.
p.s. for all of you trying to figure out the “point” of the video…the great thing about it is that there is no point, there is no point in the life or the death of the sheep. they are all going to die and so are we and the concept of the song is to live in the happiest way possible and not to stress the little things, to float. just my take on it.

  33. MarioC  |   Posted on Sep 13th, 2004

yes…I’ll admit. I was at first dissappointed in GNFPWLBN…but this was because I had all these expectations. After I divorced myself from these expectations, the album grew on me. Now I like it, not as much as say Lonesome Crowded West or other older stuff. So I’d say that I’d like to be a musical purist and be pissed off at everyone and the band for changing and all, but the truth is…I like the new album for completely different reasons than I liked their old stuff. The only thing I don’t get is the constant death references…at first I was afraid that Isaac was doing a Notorius BIG thing and writing an album about death shortly before his own death…knock on wood. Of course death is something we all have to come to terms with, and it seems as though he is coming to terms with his own, or he’s trying to get us to come to terms with our own…either way “my brain’s a burger and my heart’s the charcoal”

  34. First time I’ve even heard of Modest Mouse and right afterI buy this album, I’ll bet it won’t be my last either.
Even for an old man like me, this song caught my attention.
Like most have said, Float On, Rocks!

Amen to that brother!!!!! two-thumbs up for the song (^^)

Hi I am a new fan. I love Float on. Interested in hearing the whole album.

  37. ROCK ON  |   Posted on Oct 21st, 2004

Float On is the best non-bullshit non-mainstream music video i’ve ever seen, it’s a word of art. By the way, fuck Media culture, fuck MTV, and fuck Britney Spears (i would =D)

  38. I am normally a rap fan, but this is the only song i like… and it’s the shit! Fuck, when they do that thang at the end…whew…”Alright Somethin Somethin, We’ll all float on,

  39. or it could be my white side talking…

  40. Gray  |   Posted on Nov 11th, 2004

Modest mouse are eccelent muicians have lots of wonderful songs i love but i was deeply offended in the song bukowski where isaac brock calls god a control freak and a asshole if he doesnt beleive in god i dont care it makes me mad that he talks to god like that and if i had a chance id spent in isaac brocks face and piss on his foot

  41. Katie  |   Posted on Nov 12th, 2004

My boyfriend (who is now my ex) used to listen to modest mouse all the time. just to be stubborn i pretended i didnt like them but wen we broke up i decided to go buy the album (good news for people who like bad news) and i looooooove it! it is so differen from the r’n'b rap music i listen to and i found myself in the lyrics! i love you modest mouse!!!!

  42. Seth  |   Posted on Nov 17th, 2004

does any one realise that in the music video the sheep are going to a slaughter house?

  43. Sydney  |   Posted on Nov 20th, 2004

I must admit, I am sorry that I only first heard of Modest Mouse last week. What can I say? I live under a rock. BUT IT WAS NOT FROM MTV. I was talking to a random person on the bus and I was talking about how much I liked the Shins. They recommended Modest Mouse to me because of that.

I will not pretend to be a die hard fan, because I’m not. Can’t I just appreciate the music?

Anyway, the music video I found VERY fitting with the song. For those of you who just went “WTF?” to the music video you need to go to a stupid people home for not putting more thought into it. I liked the whole idea of the music box, it’s saying that we’re all very small sheep in some mechanical box, that some guy “god”, I assume, is presenting all a stage. It’s the we’re all finite insignificant beings of a master plan idea. I haven’t listened to other Modest Mouse albums, but this album inspired me to look into it some more.

  44. i love mustache people, that’s why the video is so great… no seriously fuck U2, it doesn’t sound like them at all! MM is a band evolving in their own right

  45. kaleb  |   Posted on Dec 20th, 2004

none of there albums sound like the others so either like it or dont.

  46. Joanna  |   Posted on Dec 23rd, 2004
