More proof that great singles often make horrible ringtones. Listen, Laugh.

One of these days I’m gonna post an extensive review of all the ringtones I’ve bought for my Ericsson T610. I think it’s fun that you can’t preview the ringtone before you pay 99 cents. It’s like gambling! (Man, I need to get a life.) Anyway, here’s my best and worst picks to date:

BEST
No question: Tom Tom Club’s “Genius Of Love.” It’s like Chris and Tina wrote that hook anticipating how it would sound as a polyphonic ringtone in twenty years.

WORST
Weezer “Undone (The Sweater Song).” This was the first one I ever bought. I’ve since learned guitar songs always sound shitty as ringtones. Plus, Rivers is replaced by a … saxophone?

Anyone got any ringtone recommendations? “Toxic” is starting to get on my nerves.

  1. right said fred “i’m too sexy for my shirt”
a classic. actually, the ringtone is better than the original.

  2. i’ve got “girlfriend in a coma” (smiths) “hella good” (no doubt), “come into my world” (kylie), “the pink panther theme” (mancini), and pachelbel’s “canon in d,” and all are good — esp. the no doubt. go to zingy.com; they’ve got a great selection, and for cheap.

as for that moz one: i listened to it a few weeks ago, and, you’re right, it’s dreadful.

I use the A-Team theme song often. Currently using Get Smart theme song. They both sound great, easily recognizable.

  4. Everytime my phone rings with A-Ha’s classic, “Take On Me,” I am showered with flowers and accolades from all within earshot. Perfect synth pop ringtone joy.

Verizon is now offering actual song clips in addition to the polyphonic ringtones; they have “My Coco” and “Reptilia.” v.v. amusing stuff.

  5. London Calling and Everybody Wants to Rule the World are the two best ones that I can find in t-mobiles selection. Oh yeah, and they let you preview them on their website before you download them :)

  6. > they let you preview them on their website
    > before you download them :)

But I only seem to buy ringtones when I’m drunk in a cab!

I bought “Shout” the other day. Do they have “Head Over Heels”? I would totally buy that.

I love “Reptilla,” but I can’t imagine it sounds good as a ringtone. Still, T-Mobile’s selection is pretty lame. Hi Jess!

  8. > i’ve got “girlfriend in a coma”

Wait … everyone has better selections that me! Matt, what cell phone do you have?

  9. mine’s “push it” by salt ‘n peppa. everyone marvels as how totally sweet it is! especially the BREAK DOWN.

i have ‘because the night’ right now but i’m backed up with the themes from murder she wrote and , uh, the a-team.

i switch between bowie’s major tom, pet shop boys west end girls and beatles penny lane.

  12. matthew  |   Posted on May 11th, 2004

i meant bowie’s space oddity. sorry.

Actually, both mp3 clips make terrible ringtones, but they make people giggle.

  14. I have “West End Girls” too, but it cuts out at the best part.

  15. TI, “Rubber Band Man” – SHEER RINGTONE PERFECTION. Anything with 808 drum kicks sounds really good on a cell speaker.

  16. Laurel  |   Posted on May 11th, 2004

I have the Pixies’ WHere is my Mind… it actually sounds really good!

  17. Dave-o  |   Posted on May 11th, 2004

I’ve got a t610 too, great phone. Right now I’ve got the theme to Doogie Howser, MD as my default ring and the theme to Bubble Bobble as my alarm clock. I’ve got various rings set up for certain callers as well, those are: tatu – all the things she said, the theme from punch out for the nes, them from the a-team, theme from mario brothers 2, and the theme from the price is right.

Try http://www.musicrobot.com to find user-made midi files to put on your phone.

bluetooth technology can help you enter ringtone heaven: just download any midi file and bluetooth it to your phone. “far from over” by frank stallone is an absolute winner.

  19. scott, sorry — didn’t come back to this post til just now. we’ve actually got the same phone, man: the t610. zingy works independent of carrier — you get a wap push text message and download it. i think i bought a $5 pack, and then they were less than a buck a piece? you can even send them as gifts to friends. if i had yr number, i’d totally surprise you with one. ;) oh, just playinig them, i realize that i forgot: i’ve got “rock your body,” too, and that one is great. i’ve just got them assigned to different people so that i can hear them all.

  20. Jay-Z’s “Dirt Off Your Shoulder” makes for an *excellent* ringtone.

  21. Mike  |   Posted on May 12th, 2004

I can never find any good websites with ringtones other than the Britney, 50 cent variety. Can anybody recommend one in the US? Preferrably a FREE site?

  22. deirdre  |   Posted on May 13th, 2004

Yes, they have Head Over Heels on the At&t website. Its called “Heaven” on there though, I dont know which name is actually right. It never gets old. I put it on my phone last summer and it still makes me happy when my phone rings.

  23. S. LOCKDOWN  |   Posted on May 13th, 2004

t-mobile has europe’s “the final countdown” which i think is pretty amazing.

people always be freakin out when they hear it. in related news, has anyone noticed how many times said song has appeared on that show “arrested development”. at least three that ive seen, and ive only seen the show like three times.
