I’ve been on an Elliott Smith kick since Eliza put “Waltz #2″ on repeat earlier this week.

Today Anti-Records revealed that the beloved folkie’s final album From a Basement on the Hill will be released October 19, nearly a year to the day after his suicide. More info can be found at MTV News and NY Times.

Madeleine Peyroux is an up-and-coming musician who sounds like Billie Holiday. A few years ago she was a street musician in Paris. Peyroux’s sophomore disc Careless Love comes out this September on Rounder Records and includes covers of Dylan, Leonard Cohen … and Elliott Smith. Enjoy:

    Madeleine Peyroux can’t be only 22; she’s been playing at the club I book for more than 8 years… I think the bio you have is a bit outdated. So she might not get child-prodigy points, but she’s still pretty damn good.

    Whoa, I was just listening to Gloomy Sunday (Billie Holiday)yesterday and Madeleine Peyroux does sound uncannily like her in her lower registers- this is the first time i have heard her. Cool song, like Holiday doing a down tempo alternative track.

    i used to love madeleine peyroux!!! i got her debut album when it first came out years ago. i haven’t listened to it in ages – thanks for reminding me! i should bust it out again, or add it to ze i-pod at least…

    it’s not certain Elliott’s death was a suicide. the investigation is still underway, nine months after the event.
