I usually leave stuff like this to Low Culture, but I’ve gotta comment on the new Time Out New York about NYC clubs.

Three summers ago the Voice ran the same cover.

I know this because that’s Eliza Jane’s hand on the cover of the Voice. It went on newsstands the night of our first date. Nothing beats an icebreaker like “Hey look, I’m on the cover of the Village Voice.” Eliza doesn’t want me to tell you that she used to be a hand model.

I like Eliza Jane’s hand post diamond better. But there’s something attractively virginal about that stud clad wrist that makes me want to see how soft it is.

and remember last year? when the Voice had their summer drinking issue and there was a pint of beer on the cover? and then Time Out had a pint of beer on their summer drinking issue cover too? wow, man, that was something.

i was never a hand model! not true!

  4. no big surprise. time out either steals ideas or just regurgitates them over and over rather than (gasp!) reporting on places and things it hasnt covered yet. lazy fucks.

I think that even if eliza wasn’t a hand model, she still has quite lovely hands.

Want to know something crazy? That’s *ME* endorsing Fernando Ferrer in the upper-right-hand corner of the Time Out cover.

p.s. Keep up the good work, stereogum.com–the black community loves you.

hey scott, don’t forget to plug my article! .
..oh ok, i’ll do it myself.

in the new fake-eliza’s-hand/nyc music clubs issue, i wrote a story about a wonderful brooklyn volunteer group called swing state summer break. they’re — duh — trying to swing the election to get bush out of office in november.

my story is the opener in the Around Town section — check it out!

< < time out either steals ideas or just regurgitates them over and over rather than (gasp!) reporting on places and things it hasnt covered yet.>>

i don’t think time out is a bastion of literary excellence, but i don’t think it swipes ideas (except for eliza’s hand thing) any more than the next publication. that’s what entertainment journalism is, and does. it’s fluff — it reports on trends, and trends don’t ever quite die; they just circle around, back in and over themselves.

most entertainment mags do the same thing — they cover what’s currently considered new or trendy or “hot.” and the new hot person/thing/flavor of the month usually looks a whole lot like last month’s.

it sucks, but that’s what mainstream culture (i.e. the masses) want. time out is a mainstream mag, with here-and-there hints and aspirations of edginess.

oh, that above post was in reference to Mis Anthrope’s comment: “time out either steals ideas or just regurgitates them over and over rather than (gasp!) reporting on places and things it hasnt covered yet.”

  11. For the record, I couldn’t care less about the similarity between the covers. It was just a good excuse to finally post a picture of that Voice.

  12. Also read Laura XBox’s article in the TONY.

  13. jesus, have i really been on live journal THAT LONG? i think i remember when eliza talked about her hand modelling career on there.

  14. saralou  |   Posted on Jul 22nd, 2004

What’s lamer than the same idea on a cover is the tired, unimaginative idea in the first place. Don’t think TONY stole the idea from VV anymore than they stole it from any of the zillions of publications that have run that exact same art concept with a concert or bar story. These same boring ideas aren’t isolated to NYC — I guarantee lazy designers at papers from Des Moines to Spokane have used this.

  15. they definately steal ideas

  16. You know what’s kinda a sweet thought? If that picture on Time Out was Eliza Jane’s hand now, it would be wearing your ring.

You know what’s a complete mystery? Why I thought of that.

  17. hey scott, are you still dating that hand model? because i think i love you (so stated in honor of the partridge family auditions).

you posted that same pic a while ago.
