Yeah, I know you‘ve been listening to them for years… But for the others who discover new music only through The O.C.…
After stints with Barsuk and Saddle Creek, today Rilo Kiley trade on their indie pop pedigree with More Adventurous. The polished production and copious horns and strings suit them. Jenny’s got one of those really cute voices that’s like an 8 on a scale of preciousness (10 being Gwen Stefani, 1 being Tom Waits). I could listen to her sing the phone book. Though I prefer to listen to her sing “Any asshole could open a museum, put all of the things he loves on display…” (from “It’s A Hit”).
More Adventurous is the album that made me stop thinking of them as that-band-with-the-girl-from-Troop-Beverly-Hills-and-the-guy-from-Boy-Meets-World and start recognizing their pop smarts and huge commercial potential.
“Portions For Foxes” is the obvious candidate for radio play. Do they play that on the radio? I’m sure we’ll see it in a WB show this fall. You can stream that track along with two other cuts here.
“Does He Love You” has a really sweet melody that sounds instantly familiar. Download a
(courtesy of Greetings In Braille: A Blake Sennett Fansite) and listen to a story about sweating someone else’s baby daddy. So, if you buy one CD this week you won’t be disappointed.
I’ve never seen them live, but hopefully that will change this fall (free tickets please). RK play Bowery Ballroom with Tilly and the Wall and Now It’s Overhead on 10/7 and 10/8.
Also this is my new wallpaper.
Sorry, but I don’t know if Jenny is dating Ben Gibbard or Jake Gyllenhaal these days. I know that’s all you people really want to know. That and whether she went topless in Foxfire.

she didn’t. go topless in foxfire. hers were the only tits we don’t get to see. shame, that.
My dad loves that movie. I suspect the breasts have something to do with it, but it could be the groundbreaking performances.
Oh, everyone knows Blake Sennett the best as Pinsky from “Salute Your Shorts.” “Boy Meets World” be damned!
you know, i don’t even care if it’s true anymore; i’m going to perpetuate rumors like it’s my right as an american with internet access: jenny is dating blake.
if you want to keep hearing rumors…
she’s actually with folk-ish singer, jonathan rice. i’m just saying is all…
who cares about rilo kiley when TILLY AND THE WALL are opening up for them?!?!? c’mon, get those priorities straight, scott-o.
but really…i am so there! (mainly for tilly)
> but really…i am so there! (mainly for tilly)
let’s get tix.
I’ve been listening to those three streaming Rilo Kiley tracks over and over again for about an hour. Must. Get. Paid. Must. Buy. Album.
My LA friend has been telling me to listen to Rilo Kiley for awhile and I never bothered. (Guy’s favorite group is Catherine Wheel and his favorite record last year was that Decemberists, whom, since I’m tired of every album wanting to be Deserter’s Songs or Soft Bulletin, I ignored after first listen. I mention this soley to say that I don’t think my friend and I’s musical tastes are compatible.) They’re good.
BTW, Laura, do you really like that Tilly and the Wall? Seem hella gimmicky to me and the other day’s Pitchfork review made ‘em sound like something I can do without. (Plus, they’re friends with Connor Oberst, whom I wish would go away for good.)
Dude, have you noticed that people are still posting comments under “Lindsay Lohan’s Nipple” from back in May? I’m curious to know exactly how many hits per day you get because of that post.
Is Angelina Jolie in that picture, second from the right? I never saw Foxfire, so I don’t know.

oh lord, do i EVER like tilly and the wall. i’ve been fairly obsessed with them since getting their cd in the mail a few months back. honestly, it’s probably my favorite record this year.
i just read the pitchfork review, and i agree with most of it. but the tap dancing thing truly isn’t gimmicky, though i know it sounds that way on paper.
ahem… you can read MY review of it here: http://flakmag.com/music/tillywall.html
You could not have picked a more frightening photo.
I LIKE BUTTS!
i just bought this and am now listening to it. rilo kiley are awesome, for sure.
“Does he love you” sounds instantly familiar because it a little bit sounds almost exactly like the melody from “Yoshimi”.
And we all know how familiar that one sounded: Cat Stevens (aka Sufjan’s dad) thought that one sounded a little *too* familiar.
while i really really like More Adventurous, i don’t think it’s close to RK’s best work.
the first 3 songs are total money, but after that shit-tastic tune Blake sings on, and the 50′s-ish country sounding tune (it’s a good song, but imo, doesn’t quite fit w/ the tone of the album very well), it starts to sorta go downhill some after that.
not saying that the 2nd half sucks, it’s just not nearly as amazing as those first 3 songs either.
probably will be in my year end top 20 i’d hope tho.
yeah, seeing jenny lewis sing “does he love you” in person is quite the experince.
its happened to me a couple of times.
jenny ain’t dating any of the above. ben g is very happily shacked up with his girlfriend back in seattle, she and bandmate blake broke up over two years ago, and jake was a date pre-kirsten dunst, now just a friend.
doubting the johnathan rice story, as he’s eight years younger and lives on the opposite coast, but hey, true love knows no frequent flier limits..
the new album has been on repeat for three days. it’s very good though not as solid as execution of all things but a great effort nonetheless.
whenever i think of foxfire, i recall how jenny lewis’s character sung: “do you wanna come inside my house? do you wanna show me things you’ve never seen before? i don’t wanna tie you down. i just wanna tie you up. do you wanna come inside my house?”
i posted this comment somewhere else and i am going to put it here cuz its relevant:
my bf and i are die hard RK fans who have taken in the hottness of the live show 18 times (yeah bitch…when i moved to LA 4 years ago they were but a local band playing to like 20 people) i am so disappointed in the new album. and believe me, i have been telling EVERYONE i know for years to get on the bandwagon, i mean i have been so obsessed. but this new album is not what i was hoping for. lyrically it is weak and it is just missing the perfect mix of ‘Execution’ . i got the album about 2 months ago through work and i have been listening steadily to try to convince myself i’m wrong but…it’s just not there. they have gotten themselves down to such a scientific song making style that it sounds almost too clean and trying a little too hard. portion for foxes is catchy as hell but it was better first time around as spectacular views. that elliot smith song is just cheesified and don’t get me started on that MTV guitar song that just breaks my heart every time i hear it. they have kicked saddle creek to the curb so that they can get more famous and i feel like they have lost touch with what made them so good to start. too much touring, too polished, too self conscious.
bring back the rock and little imperfections, and the FUN. i don’t think i’m even going to the october shows, at this point i jsut don’t feel like i am going to see anything new or exciting. (except tilly- they are a great live show as well)
i don’t want to be such a snobbymcsnob but you guys have missed the boat. their live shows used to be so much more fun and spontaneous. they did a neutral milk hotel cover once that was fucking amazing. BUT this album is much better live than on record, i will give them that.
es knows whats up.
the new RK record is sad and lamentable.
lyrically, it is laughable and even cringe-worthy. and not even in that formerly charmingly vulnerable way (e.g. “glendora”) that made RK special.
wait ok i have to admit i’m a bit new to the concert scene ( strict parents) but i’m a avid student in good music and i was really getting worked up to go see rilo kiley play with tilly and the wall at maxwells but i found out that rk isn’t playing so i was going to refund my tickets and go see them all play at bowery ballroom but am i better off sticking with tilly
oh yes and tilly and the wall are amazing they were my first real concert i love how they are the opening act but just steal the show. and they’re so nice
