i spy with my little eye something that begins with k….

  3. I’d say go see Marah while you’re in Philly, but they won’t be back in their hometown until next weekend.

You can figure out where David Lynch used to live and see if you can experience the “envelope of fear” that he felt embodied Philly.

  4. I spent a lot of time in Center City on a consulting gig; there’s some great Italian food on Broad Street. Zanzibar (if I am spelling it right) was a decent, if very upscale, jazz club.

Have fun in the City o’ Brotherly Love.

I don’t really remember there being much to do there. Hmmmmmm. See the Liberty Bell, go to Ben Franklin’s house, …..buy…..crack? Dunno, that’s all I can think of and I know the Liberty Bell and Franklin’s house are closed at night.

  6. check out that hickey!!!

  7. For going out to eat and drink, Old city is good. The Five Spot is a really cool hip-hop club and Lucy’s Hat Shop is a good place to eat/drink. South Street is fun for checking out record stores, cafes, and tattoo parlors. A trip to South Philly for cheesestakes is a must.

  8. Go eat @ Morimoto’s

    Cool bars in the city:

    The Khyber – 2nd & Chestnut
If only because it’s the key small indie venue in the city, you should check it out. Even if nobody’s playing, it’s a cool bar.

    Sugar Mom’s : Church St. between 2nd and 3rd
Basement scene with pool table and a decent jukebox. Fun, casual, low-key. A nice break from the yuppie crowd at most Old City spots.

    Monks: 16th & Spruce
More types of beer, particularly Belgian, then you know what to do with. Some of the best food in the city as well. The type of place you can only find in Philly. Just don’t get the buffalo wings (They’re called Spanish Flies on the menu). They’re just too hot. Trust me.

    La Terrace – 35th & Sansom
If for some reason you find yourself in the U.Penn/West Philly area, go here, sit at the bar (bar menu food is much cheaper). Order the burger. Can’t be beat.

    Also, Best Cheesesteak – Jim’s, 4th & South
You’ll smell this place from a block away, probably before you can see it. I think it’s better than Pat’s or Geno’s, as do many people. Plus, it’s right in the heart of South Street, so there’s plenty to do before/after.

  12. i’m going to see electrelane at transit tonight. other than that and the other suggestions, i’ve got nothing.

  13. Yeah go to that Iron chef dude’s restaurant… And then go eat like 90 cheesesteaks

  14. I went to Morimoto a few weeks ago. It was truly amazing.

Go to 3rd & Arch st.,you can see where those REAL WORLD kids made an azz of themselves. I agree w/ the post above,Jim’s Steaks at 4th & South has the best cheesesteaks,
p.s.: Oh that Kevin Federline-what a fashion plate

  16. Just went to Monk’s at the suggestion above — the wings were AMAZING. Best wings I’ve ever had. Fries are great, too.

  17. Refering to the first post, I thought this was pretty funny…

    I second the Khyber.

No trip to Philly is complete without going to the diveiest of dive bars. Make haste to “Dirty Franks.” The new Continental on 18th and Chestnut is swank and hip. South Street is a total tourist trap, but worth a gander. Also check out the Philadelphia Weekly for happenings. There are some great shows popping around here soon.

take a tour of Eastern State Penitentiary …….one of the spookiest, coolest places i’ve ever been to.

  21. Re: Philly. Second the Eastern State Penitentiary suggestion–it’s fascinating. Also, Standard Tap (2nd and Poplar in Northern Liberties neighborhood, which is directly north of Old City) has the best bar food in the city and is a cool place to hang out. All beer is draft, and there’s a mileage limit. If it’s not made within x miles of Philly (60? Forget the exact number), they won’t serve it. Good jukebox, too.

And…it’s the Philly Fringe/Live Arts festival. Much weirdness and fun: http://www.livearts-fringe.org/2004/templates/schedule.cfm

Some like the Mutter Museum of medical oddities (8 foot colon, little drawers of items removed from peoples’ stomachs, Siamese twins). 19 S 22nd Street. http://www.collphyphil.org/muttpg1.shtml

  22. Go back to Monk’s and order some Brussel’s Mussels then check out Fergie’s other bar – Fergie’s Pub. Fergie has that awesome name recall talent like Frank Rizzo did. (I lived in Philly for 10 years and I moved and was gone for a year, when I came back to visit, he was walking by and saw me at a glance and casually said “Hello _ _ _.” Awesome. Great talent for a bar & restaurant owner to have. Oh, get City Paper as well to check out listings for anything. And don’t forget to go for a walk in Rittenhouse Square to see all the dogs being walked in this beautiful weather!
