I’m curious about the Frank Black Francis double LP coming out on SpinArt next month. The first CD contains the 1986 demos for Come On Pilgrim, the second offers reinterpretations of Pixies classics, recorded with Two Pale Boys.
Says Frank of the project: “Sure, we?ve messed with the gospel, but I am satisfied with it.”
CD1: Demos 1. The Holiday Song 2. I’m Amazed 3. Rock A My Soul 4. Isla De Encanta 5. Caribou 6. Broken Face 7. Build High 8. Nimrod’s Son 9. Ed Is Dead 10. Subbacultcha 11. Boom Chickaboom 12. I’ve Been Tired 13. Break My Body 14. Oh My Golly 15. VamosCD2: Rerecordings 1. Caribou 2. Where Is My Mind 3. Cactus 4. Nimrod’s Son 5. Levitate Me 6. Wave Of Mutilation 7. Monkey Gone To Heaven 8. I’ve been listening to “Cactus” for a while now, thanks to Fluxblog. This week Music For Robots unveiled “Monkey Gone To Heaven.”
Cool, no? Frank Black Francis drops 10/12.
As for a new Pixies album?
Unlikely … unless Diane Warren offers to lend a hand.

that second disc of Frank Black Francis leaked quite some time ago (before the first show back even), and i gotta say, as a huge Pixies fan, i think it’s kinda lame myself. curious about the first disc tho.
not to regurgitate jon stewart here, but I think the second disc is actually pretty good. I like what Charles has done with his old stuff, and I’m glad that he didn’t just put out the demo disc solo (it’s just a straight-to-cassette recording). I think both are going to be worth owning and listening to.
word.
Saw the Pixies in Berkeley last Friday. Holy Beejeesus, were they great.
From what I’ve heard of the second disc, I’m pretty appalled. Blech!
i’m a huge huge huge pixies fan, and although at first i didn’t like the idea of the old stuff being messed around with, it’s actually really really good. different interpretations, and it’s really ambiant. if you’re not in the mood for the fast paced stuff, this mellow disc is pretty good. i’m interested in hearing the first disc. i guess they’re demos recorded at gary smith’s house in allston, massachusetts just before they started recording “come on pilgrim”. god, i love the pixies. oh, and i think they’re bluffing about a new record. charles kept saying that rumors of a reunion weren’t true, and then they reformed. i bet we get an album by late 2005.
i heard the second disc a while ago and have to say i dig the radical reworkings of the songs.
as for the pixies live, last time i saw them they were opening for love and rockets and i fell asleep during their set only to be woken up as one of the cymbals fell and almost took kim deal’s head off.
i have a feeling i won’t fall asleep at their november show in chicago…
I can’t get the Monkey Gone to Heaven link to give me the whole song. But I like what I can hear of it a lot.
