Elton John: Hello, Tina. Where’s my Jimmy boy?
Tina Fey: Oh. Well, he’s gone. Amy’s here now.
Elton John: You’re not really my cup of tea, dear. If you know what I mean.
Amy: ‘Cause you’re superhumanly gay?
Elton John: Yes.

Wasn’t new Weekend Update duo Tina Fey & Amy Poehler SO CUTE YOU WANTED TO PUKE?

More likely, you forgot to Tivo … so watch the whole thing here (Real Stream). Possibly, best Update ever.

  1. CUTE ? FUNNY.

  2. Sorry, the above comment was supposed to read:

    “CUTE [does not equal] FUNNY”.

The blogging software didn’t jive with the [does not equal] symbol.

  3. Elton John is gay? This is news to me.

NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! How could this be? That SNL sucked. And because of you stereogum and others I was completely dissapointed that Seth Meyers was not on WU. Nevermind it was not your fault. I was way too obsessed with SNL anyways, now I can use my Satudays more constructively.

  5. For the record, Seth Meyers blows.

    *goes back to bed*

Elton was not funny. Ben was not funny. Tony was funny.

  7. Gandolfini was awesome. I think Horatio is always hilarious despite mediocre material.

According to IMDB Amy’s nicknames are Cool Cat Amy and Crazy Amy.

I was at the taping and people boo-ed when Amy came on the stage.

  9. sadly, i sorta missed fallon cracking up during his sketches and update.

  10. Amy was the one who said the “superhumanly gay” line. Best line of the night.

  11. lundy  |   Posted on Oct 3rd, 2004

amy poehler was brutal. she only got a couple laughs the entire time. tina was good, as always. they need seth meyers to do it. they need a small, slightly queer looking fellow to do it. much like jimmy. horatio couldn’t do it. he’s funny, but he’d make an ass of himself. plus any of the others wouldn’t be good, they’ve all got big roles with other characters and Update would just take away from the allure of their characters. that’s just my opinion.

  12. CAN SOMEONE TELL ME why Jeff Richards was fired?

  13. lara  |   Posted on Oct 3rd, 2004

Seth’s got Kerry as a possible future long-term character, which is probably why he isn’t on Update.

As for anyone booing Amy, they can all suck it. She’s comic gold, and I for one, who was a huuuge Fallon fan in the beginning, got tired of him being unable to get through an entire sketch or Update without losing it. Jimmy didn’t get any laughs, either–they all went to Tina.

And rightly so–she *could* carry the entire thing by herself, no problem.

As a whole, though, last night’s premiere was awful. Sigh.

also: WHY IS WILL FORTE STILL THERE?

  15. Melissa Bhagwandin  |   Posted on Oct 3rd, 2004

Ya Jeff Richards rocked I thought I was the only one who missed him. And don’t knock Will Forte I think hes ok.

  16. Jeff Richards quit.

    From SF Gate.com:

So why did he leave the show? He pauses.

“There were too many good things happening, and it was just time to go. I had a blast on the show — it was the best time ever — but I felt it was time to do other things. To be on ‘SNL’ requires all of your time; you have no time to do anything else. And I wanted to get back to California.”

I think that SNL thought that bringing out the big stars like, Alec Baldwin and the Sopranos guy would make the show write itself. Sadly it didn’t. :( ! Also I was really excited for Seth Meyers when I heard that he was going to be on WU and was extreamly disapointed when Amy Poehler came out (despite her cuteness and usual funniness). Other than meyers I wanted Will Forte to be on WU (He was on clone high!). But this was the first episode and it can only get better…right?

  18. jane doe  |   Posted on Oct 3rd, 2004

Mad TV kicks SNL’s ass anyway.

  19. I thought mad tv used to suck because it had to much gross humour but now with all of those new cast members I think its great.

  20. Paul  |   Posted on Oct 3rd, 2004

I didn’t even realize Richards was gone. Apart from Drunk Girl, he never played a character I remember.

  21. Jeff  |   Posted on Oct 4th, 2004

I think Mad TV’s made for retarded grade school children.

  22. Forte’s Bush was spot-on. And Tim Calhoun is my favorite SNL character in ages.

  23. I really wanted to like Amy on the Update. But I dunno, along with the piss-poor material she was given, I kept getting distracted by her hair. It looked, umm, well, there’s no real polite way to say it… it looked ‘jizzed on’!!
And I can understand Seth Myers on WU, after seeing him on that Spy Glass skit.

All in all, a weak SNL. Debbie Downer bombed. The one last season was hilarious only cuz they were cracking up the whole time. No chance of that happening too much now that Jimmy Boy’s gone off to make movies like, Taxi. Uh yeah, Taxi.

  24. I thought it was really good. Amy will only get better too because she is definitely one of the most important people on SNL. And Horatio is f-ing hilarious– I can’t explain how funny he is- he is fat funny- fat and funny.

  25. Man, this SNL season premiere was beyond weak. The material stank for the most part. And if it didn’t, the delivery and execution really, really was bad. Especially if you consider the amount of time they had to get used to it.

Amy Poehler is funny as hell, but as a co-anchor on Weekend Update? Boy. Not good. I’m hoping she’ll get more used to it, but her realy strength is straight improv and performance. Sitting behind a desk and reading jokes? Ummm. I dunno.

And here’s something people fail to mention. Part of the greatness of the Fey and Fallon matchup was the fact that it was playing up the male and female sexual tension of newscasters. Now, that’s completely gone. And the parody doesn’t work because in the real world the only place you have two female newscasters is on “let’s eat breakfast together” early morning news shows. Not on the later in the day/night newscasts.

Also, the film of Kitty Kelly’s take on George W.’s partying… Somewhat inspired, but very limp. I got the message 5 seconds into it…. But IT WOULDN’T END!!!

All in all, very limp season start. But thankfully Jeff Richards is gone; he sucked like a Dyson Vacuum cleaner.

“also: WHY IS WILL FORTE STILL THERE?”

Will Forte earned a life-long pass, as far as I’m concerned, for being the voice of Abe Lincoln on Clone High. He can do anything he wants.

  27. I should do a post about Jay Mohr’s SNL book one day … ’cause there were lots of fun facts in it. For example, Rob Schneider ordered sushi every night and inspected each piece with a jeweler’s loupe, looking for worms. Also Chris Farley shit out a window onto Rockefeller Plaza on a $100 bet from Jay and Dave Attel. He then proceeded to chase Jay down the hall with his own shit in his hands. Yeah … interesting book.

Come on, the monologue was funny. “I call it my Irish negotiating technique”…come on that’s golden

  29. Did the announcer say “Will Ferrell” instead of “Will Forte” during the opening? It sounded like he said it and they cut it out with whatever delay they have.

Also, did Jimmy Fallon announce Amy Poehler?

  30. I think Affleck did a funny James Carville.

  31. the only skit i really laughed at on this week’s episode was the one where ben was the wedding dj. WU was okay. the rest of the episode was pretty damn bad, though. very weak opener.

  32. “Did the announcer say “Will Ferrell” instead of “Will Forte” during the opening?”

    Yes.

The only good bit of the show was Gandolfini. The problem with Update wasn’t Amy Poehler’s delivery, but the terribly awful material she was given.

  33. amy poehler is comedy gold.

  34. jane doe  |   Posted on Oct 4th, 2004

Maybe MAD TV is made for retarded high school children, such as myself.

  35. anonymous  |   Posted on Oct 5th, 2004

first off, what is this nonsense about “if there had been better material written for them”, “they had to work with what they were given” horseshit….everyone knows that when you are on SNL, you write your own stuff. point blank. the writers suck. the actors aren’t fresh enough writers…

that said, i saw part of SNL, including update and some other worthless affleckian skits. ok, how f*n pointless was the skit on the elevator? why is it so damn funny that affleck bitchslaps a frightened woman repeatedly?? i always knew that jerk was a wifebeater! but seriously, is that is supposed to be comedy, then wtf do i know. that was just not funny.

anyway, poehler was better than fey. i think they should ditch fey, keep poehler and add a decent guy to the scene. as stated above, the reason WU works is the mockery of the male vs. female sexual tension. that is what the news is made of haha i think it would be great to see two female co-anchors, but it is not realistic. i would rather have a balanced anchor desk representing both male and female viewpoints. poehler and fey seemed like two gossipy gal pals. it doesn’t seem like a critique of a newscast to me, unless you’re dissing the view.

and furthermore, why the hell did affleck host?? he hasn’t done shit, no one cares about him & he doesn’t have a picture out until xmas time which will likely flop anyway, like everything he attaches him name to…hmm maybe that has to deal with the fact that the writing sucks and real talent do not want to associate themselves with this crap.

lorne is a sell-out for teeny boppers and ‘celebrities’. ok, he won’t even invite john goodman back to the damn show (goodman told kimmel this last nite) meanwhile goodman has a brand new sitcom to promote; and goodman is responsible for some of the most memorable SNL characters and has helped the blues brothers live on (regardless of critique). goodman has done a lot for lorne & i was shocked to hear lorne won’t do shit for good buddy goodman anymore. what a tool.

  36. anonymous  |   Posted on Oct 5th, 2004

furthermore, why doesn’t buddy ol pal lorne invite zach braff to host? he is clearly talented and has one of the most popular shows in the US and NBC! if i see f*n hillary duff mock lohan or vice versa one more time….well, i just don’t give a f—. it’s over. seems like SNL is more for retarded 7th graders now.

imdb says goodman’s appeared on SNL 20 times and hosted 11…and he had to fill in all those damned blues brothers appearances and that miserable movie…so what, he’s fat. big deal. we’ve always loved that about him. he’s cuddly. he’s our dad. we love him anyway. we want him back, dammit!

  39. Not enough Fred Armisen. I fell asleep after Weekend Update.

  40. Felicia B  |   Posted on Oct 7th, 2004

^ur rite he was not even in the show!!!

  41. For those who still care…

    http://www.nytimes.com/2004/10/12/arts/television/12nbc.html

“The cast members Horatio Sanz and Seth Meyers also tried out for the news slot, as did Jason Sudeikis, a writer who joined the show last season.”
