MAYA: “If we could play with backing tracks we’d be the greatest band in the world. If that was all you had to do in this industry that would be great. But we don’t do that. [Other acts] do that because they’re dancers or performers and they’re moving around and doing crazy things with their butts but Ashlee Simpson just stands there.”

I’ve seen the Donnas play live. Granted, it was maybe five years ago and they’re probably better now, but I think it’s safe to say that they would need much, much more than a backing track to become the greatest band in the world. Divine intervention would certainly help.

The thing that surprises me about this post is not what the Donnas said about Ashlee Simpson, but that it is THE DONNAS saying it. If they knew any better, they would realize that they are a 3rd rate punk band marketed for the fact they are pretty girls playing guitars.
Oh wait, I called them a punk band, I spoke too soon. Punk had a purpose, a fight to fight, a mission. It started a way of living and a culture, it wasn’t just a band that plays fast with palm muting.
To me, the Donnas and Ashlee Simpson are on the same landscape, and what a terrible, barren landscape it is.

I’ve seen The Donnas twice in the past six months and they rock live. They’ve paid their dues (as a previous poster said they have been together for around 10 years) and write their own songs, yet people lump them in with ashlee and call them a 3rd rate punk band.
While they might not be your cup of tea, such attacks show why the band is so keen to distance themselves from no-talent girlie acts.
Keep listening to that “smart alternative” music–like Interpol–that you think will impress the girl who works at Starbucks.
I’m not a punk fan but isn’t the genre over 20 years old? Should it stand for exactly the same stuff as it did in the 80′s? Isn’t cultural stasis why people (rightly) hate hippies?

The Donnas aren’t a punk band, and don’t even pretend to be. I’ve read numerous interviews with them where they’ve stated they prefer to think of themselves as just a rock band.
If it weren’t for Ashlee screwing up on SNL 90% of the people out there would not know who/what she was or is.
