No one I know made it but my friend was in the Jammed show on MTV giving the band some beer. So wish I wasn’t out of town that day.

  4. i can’t get it to work, does anyone know what to do when it says bad file name?

  5. rocky  |   Posted on Jan 5th, 2005

So, U2 borrow a clip idea from AC/DC. Yawn.

  6. my first comment posted here @ stereogum! i am still pretty new to the site, but I love every single word! And photo! And link!

Anyway I’d love to push Bono off that truck when it was going over the bridge. Besides, the art of flatbed truck videos forever belongs to Bjork.

  8. bollockscox  |   Posted on Jan 6th, 2005

  9. bobette  |   Posted on Jan 6th, 2005

U2 have rocked since before have y’all haters were born, that’s why you just don’t get it.

save the hate for ashlee, she deserves it more.

    ¡viva u2!

  10. janine  |   Posted on Jan 6th, 2005

Who in the world likes their post-Achtung work? You’re just being stubborn. I have a friend that still buys their albums, like an abused girlfriend that keeps going back. “This album’s going to be better, baby, I swear!”

  11. paul hewson  |   Posted on Jan 6th, 2005

the pompous indie-cred is suffocating this website. find a new angle losers.

    !vive u2!

  12. few artists remain relevant as U2 for so long. the average life span of an indie band is 4 boringly earnest years . . .

  13. Janine  |   Posted on Jan 6th, 2005

Look, I’m all for being stubborn. I keep buying Nick Cave albums even after No More Shall We Part, when I clearly should have stopped.

By the way, it’s possible to not like U2 and not like indie rock. U2′s a band we can and should expect more of. They have the capability to not make boring albums with a few great singles. It’s comparable to not liking De Niro’s last decade of work. U2′s arc is similar to going from Taxi Driver to Godsend.

(Side note: I wonder if my dislike of 21st century U2 is related to the fact that I still prefer the album format to singles. I don’t skip the filler, I just get pissed and trade the album.)

  14. Janine  |   Posted on Jan 6th, 2005

Also, I think my side note above is why I dislike many indie bands as well.

  15. Robin  |   Posted on Jan 6th, 2005

Keep the U2 news coming, I’ll take them anyday over Britney and Ashlee.

  16. I’m a fairly new visitor to Stereogum and have been enjoying it, however there are some elitism and snobbery that is rather startling. Just because a band has been around for decades, has sold untold millions, and are huge by indie artists standards, doesn’t mean they should be disrespected.

They have come from an Irish town and lived the American Dream. They have a lead singer who cares about the world, has hung out with the Pope, some Presidents, and more to discuss politics and humanitarian help. Whether you like their music or not, you can’t deny that they are an amazing group that don’t need the amount of snobbery displayed by some here just because they’re not indie and underground enough.

  17. Janine  |   Posted on Jan 6th, 2005

I’m surprised by the lack of reading comprehension. Did I say they’re crap? No. (I have in the past, hoever, I didn’t really believe it; strong opinions are just more fun). I just said they’ve fallen off. I expect more from U2 than Good Charlotte, because U2′s capable of delivering it. The work in Africa and the hardscrabble story have no bearing on the music IMO. Music is a series of sounds. I can admire debt relief (and I do); I can’t listen to it.

By the way, if a legendary, storied career makes a band immune to all criticism, then name the place: I?ll tie you to a chair and make you listen to The Rolling Stones’ Steel Wheels.

  18. Janine  |   Posted on Jan 6th, 2005

Arhgg! I don’t like indie music! I listen to back catalogs: Funkadelic, Parliament (2 different bands by the way), Nina Simone, Prince, Zappa. Tom Waits. The Beatles, Led Zeplin and the friggin Stones! I’m so not indie. For Pete’s sake, the “newest” band I respect is Radiohead, and they’re, what, 11 years old? With over a century of recorded music available, no one needs to settle. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a snob. I’m just not the snob you think.

  19. damn! they cut out all the footage from brooklyn, Like me screaming “say something political!”

  20. jefferson  |   Posted on Jan 6th, 2005

    hey yahoos,

i cant believe how people can hate U2 when there are artists like William Hung and Ashlee out there. The edge is a great guitarist and bono writes great lyrics. hey junior high kids, stop crapping on u2 and go listen to your simple plan.

  21. stop the hatin' and save it for others who deserve  |   Posted on Jan 6th, 2005

Whether they suck to you now or not, they’ve build a solid foundation for themselves. They’re still together after all these years, and they’re still here for the same reasons as when they just started. For that, they have my respect.

  22. Janine: Sorry, I should’ve clarified myself. I wasn’t addressing criticisms of the band, as that is fine, music is subjective. What the post was addressed to are the anonymous cowards that type “Band X fucking sucks!” without constructively criticizing them, i.e. “They suck because theyir musicianship has dwindled over the years and their sound is the same old tired crap they’ve done for decades, they should become emo and punk or something.” Hope that clears my soapbox episode earlier. :)

  23. hardscrabble story? jesus, Dublin’s not that bad a place!

  24. Sara  |   Posted on Jan 7th, 2005

LOL Jefferson. What’s with you and William Hung? LoloL

  25. janine  |   Posted on Jan 7th, 2005

My bad playa. Sorry to go nuts, ad hominem attacks are sometimes (eh, usually) below me. On another note: William Hung? The Simpson sisters? Beneath contempt.

  26. zipyflavor  |   Posted on Jan 9th, 2005

What I find funny about the whole U2 thing on the various Stereogum posts as of late (and to be honest, I am a fan) is that I hear people refer to Achtung Baby as the last great album they put out. To those of us who have been fans since the early days we remember that when Achtung Baby came out, people hated it. They really thought it was crap. Only in retrospect has it gotten the respect it deserves. Not to mention when The Unforgettable Fire came out, people were saying they shouldve stopped at War because THAT was a good album. And I would say that the Fire is one of the finest albums they ever did. Not to mention that there was significant Joshua Tree backlash which is on most critics best of all time lists.

My point, and I do have one, is that U2 not only stands the test of time, it is often looked back on as much better than it was originally recieved. Could very well be that 5 years from now they will release something that everyone compares to ATYCLB. Its happened before, will probably happen again.

Just saying I find it interesting is all…

  27. big ups zipyflavor.
it is funny watching people hate on u2.
or better, just saying u2 is so irrelevant.
they can’t be that irrelevant if so many people care enough to hate on them.
let’s everyone go back to making fun of britney now, please :)

  28. BeavisOnCrack  |   Posted on Jan 11th, 2005

The only thing I like about U2, well not really U2, just Bono I guess, is when he dropped the F bomb at the Golden Globes on live TV last year. That was cool. I just never really dug U2, but I totally respect them as a band, I just choose not to buy their music.

  29. Grimmone  |   Posted on Jan 13th, 2005

I find it kinda hard to hate Bono. As much as I wanted to hate him for hanging out with Beyonce and doing that charity single with Fat Red Hat, Britney etc all and that concert that he put on for third world debt here in NY that hardly anyone went to and the sucky music that has come out within the last 10 years….then they come out with a really great album that makes all the hate go away!

By the way U2 and Bjork weren’t the first artists to travel around on a flat bed. The Stones did it first back in 75.

Anyone know why Bono thanks Beyonce and Ashley and Wynonna Judd in the linner notes to the new album?

  30. BeavisOnCrack  |   Posted on Jan 13th, 2005

Im guessing he is trying to get street cred with the teens who buy pop music.
