Not to be cheeky, but I’ll never have another excuse to post this. They played it on WLIR ten years ago and it took me almost that long to track it down.

forgive my ignorance, but what is the background to this song? Does anybody know? It’s definetly one of most bizarre things I’ve ever heard.

“The Pope does not smoke dope, even if he should.” What the hell?

If, by background, you mean the artist, check out the allmusic.com entry for Gregory Gray. It has more information than you’ll probably resonably need although it doesn’t actually have an explication of the song itself.

If, by background, you mean why the statement “The Pope does not smoke dope, even if he should” , I can hazard a guess. In the 80′s (maybe even earlier) I fondly remember a co-worker who had one of my favorite “cheeky” T-shirts of all time: “I like the Pope. The Pope smokes dope.” (I’m sure that line was swiped from some other source.) It was a very handmade silkscreen with a xerox-distressed pic of JPII with a joint in his mouth. I always thought it was funny. Especially when he insisted on wearing it all week when the Pope came to our city.

I thought it was funny as hell. Maybe if the pope smoked dope he would lighten up and catch up with the rest of the world, and realize that women aren’t second class citizens and allow priests to marry so they won’t be tempted by helpless little boys.

Let’s hope the next pope partakes of the doobage.
