We know label peeps read the Gum, but who among you will take the Sub Pop challenge? The NW label’s latest mass e-mail issues an athletic challenge to its peers.
“Consider this an open call for COMPETITION, BITCHEZ! Sub Pop World HQ is now officially challenging any and all of you to a number of athletic-ish competitions, starting with LABEL BOWLING. After bowling, we shall challenge you to LABEL VOLLEYBALL (big ups to Sue in Radio on this plan!), and finally to LABEL BASEBALL. Barsuk? Tooth and Nail? Pattern 25? Dirtnap? K? Kill Rock Stars? Anyone else? You give mommy and daddy a call at 441-8441, and we’ll do this. Winner buys loser a round of the bowling pin-shaped Budweiser. Wait–strike that; reverse it.”

what about label rugby?
…no label…dodgeball?
funny that. if sub pop took on most indie labels it would be like twenty against one or two. that is sort of the thing though, being that sub pop are indie in name only. what an interesting metaphor for the current state of indie rock.
matthew, stop being preachy, dog. it’s all in the fun.
man, two years ago, sounds are active rented out a baseball field in long beach for our annual game of rounders. we had all kind of musicians and artists getting bloody knees and blown out rotator cuffs. we’d maul sub pop. word.
Blah blah “sub pop are indie in name only.” What the fuck does that even mean?
Schlarb said rounders … ha ha … whenever i’ve played the game with people who call it rounders someone always gets hurt … dislocated shoulders etc …
i like the willy wonka reference, that’s all.
Label beer-pong!
Is Sub Pop afraid of Merge Records? Spoon could kick the Shins’ sorry little asses. bring it sub pop
(btw, I’m in no way an employee of Merge, but I dig that label)
Notice they didn’t challenge anyone to Label Chess? Those guys at K Records would totally school them.
Paul,
Since SubPop is partially owned by Elektra (a major label), they aren’t really a true independant label or “indie”.
We here at States Rights Records have officially challenged Sub Pop to a brutal game of Label The Sims.
uh…
I think Tooth And Nail can hold their own. But that’s my opinion. Don’t listen to me, yet again…
k-rock. Actually, Warner Music Group owns 49% of Sub Pop. And, since WMG is no longer a part of the Time-Warner empire and is now privately owned by Edgar Bronfman Jr., that makes them the biggest independent label in the world. (Thereby, making Sub Pop 100% indie)
Check yo’self.
paul, bullshit.
matthew, look it up.
