Matt beat me to it. Mash Ups are almost always worse than the sum of their parts. To me they’re nothing more than faddish curiosities that grow boring quickly.

Hello, Party Ben here, some bald guy showed me this site, thanks for the big ups, those who are bigging up. Those who are anti: A lot of bootlegs and “unofficial mixes” are crap, for sure, including some of mine, but at their best (Strokes vs. Xtina Aguilera for one) they not only expose overlooked aspects of the originals but also become great songs in their own right. Saying “I hate mashups” is like saying “I hate music.” It’s just silly.
PS Team9 is totally my current fave – the QOTSA/Beatles, and the Cure/Beatles, and his QOTSA Little Sister remix, are all spectacular.
PPS – It’s Mylo vs. Tegan & Sara, “Walking with a Ghost in Paris,” but no biggie.
Party Ben has got it right. A lot of mashups are crap, like a lot of bands (looking in your direction , bravery) but then there is that 10 percent or so that are just fucking amazing! I love “Rockitlikeit’slobster” way more than the original songs. Mashups are just at the beginning and I think some amazing hybrid sounds are going to come from this musical direction. I for one think an artist putting out a mashup of their past works on cd could be brilliant, might even rejuvenate a dying career.
If there’s one thing I miss about living in SF, it’s Party Ben’s Sixx Mixxes. Thankfully, I can still download them, but it’s just not the same! That Tegan & Mylo one is great, it’s been on my Pod since Ben first posted it.

Am I the only one that finds 99% of all “mash ups” painfully unlistenable?
I remember this one afternoon waking up from a nap and listening to my first mash-up on this website of paul mccartney vs. the killers or something and mid-way through I lost all reason to live. First and last mash-up for me. Remix’s are one thing but they just seem like a novelty. I thought pop music was the most disposable, at least it still gets a few listens out me-mashup seem to be a one listen type deal.
The problem is that mashups are like any other kind of music. You don’t need a license to make them. In fact, they might be even more problematic, granted that you don’t even need musical ability to make them. So anybody with any curiosity can make something, and chances are, it’s not going to be any good.
Poke through something like Get Your Bootleg On and see for yourself. There are probably 50-100 new mashes every week. If you don’t have time to listen to them all, wait until you see the recommendations.
A bad mashup sounds like two songs played simultaneously on broken record players. A good mashup sounds like a song of its own design.
Giving up because one sucked? I assume you stopped going to movies, too?

As a musician, I am not a mashup fan. I think the music should be left “real” the way the writer or original performer envisioned it.
Mashups are a train-wreck of styles and genre. I, for one, don’t want to hear any of my stuff “mashed” into somebody else’s stuff.
Even the term “Mashup” has negative connotation.

You’ve obviously never heard DJ Earworm’s “Stairway To Bootleg Heaven” or “What’s My Name?”. If you had you’d know that there are some killer mashup DJ’s out there…… Sorry, not ALL DJ’s are nothing more than a glorified human juke box. go listen to some FM radio or something.
