Everyone’s making fun of me for going to Bonnaroo. It’s a “hippie festival” they say. Look at the line-up, though — there’s plenty of patchouli-free rawk!

Wanna meet up in Manchester? E-mail me.

Should I have a guest blogger while I’m gone? In case Federfetus grows a second head or something? (Link not safe for lunch).

Agreed on the line up, but you don’t need to defend yourself to us Scott.

  2. That looks like the contract from Willy Wonka.

  3. No, you don’t need to defend yourself and yes, you should have a guest blogger. This way someone can take over if you’re kidnapped by hippies.

  4. M. Ward shouldn’t be so small or low on that list.

  5. I was actually just looking at that this morning. I’m jealous. What’s with all the late night sets tho?? 3 hours of Mars Volta from 1-4AM??? Yikes.

  6. > What’s with all the late night sets tho??

Last year Ween played at like 3AM — I was too wiped out to check it.

Mars Volta is worth nine cups of coffee.

  8. j-tron  |   Posted on Jun 3rd, 2005

Jurassic 5 are awesome live. Bonnaroo should be worth it just for them, The Volta, De La Soul and Joanna Newsom.

  9. plenty of good bands, but you should probably bring some of that salve that morgue doctors put under their nose to mask the bad smells.

  10. Worth it, just for My Morning Jacket. Have fun!

Anyway whats with that screengrab its kinda like an indie rock eye chart, the lower down you can see from 10 feet away the better (or worse?) your cred.

  11. its all about people who call themselves hippies, what the fucks a hippy.

  12. That two-headed baby thing was pretty rough.

And there is no way the four or five decent bands at Bonnaroo will justify the price of admission and the critical patouli-fume toxicity levels you’ll be forced to endure.

  13. dude, i got that email this morning…im so pissed i have too many weddings to go to afford the ‘Roo….from Trey to RJD2….

  14. man that band got ahead of that band, shit man their better then that band

  15. pete  |   Posted on Jun 3rd, 2005

good music is good music regardless of what scene it is associated with.

a lot of jam band stuff sucks and a lot of hipster stuff sucks. it’s all indie. hipsters and hippies are more similar than devotees of either group would care to admit.

    only one week away!

  16. Seriously, if this isn’t a hippy lineup then what is?

  17. Are you planning on visiting Nashville while you’re in good ol’ TN? You should! There are actually cool things here :) If you’re gonna be in Nashvegas, as we call it, you should come do a stereogum guest radio show!

  18. lala  |   Posted on Jun 3rd, 2005

who cares about the hippy lineup. you’re linking to oprah.com now?

  19. matt  |   Posted on Jun 3rd, 2005

    just go to dr. dog

  20. Say ‘hello’ to Uncle Warren (Haynes) for me, Scott!

  21. Kyle  |   Posted on Jun 3rd, 2005

What the hell is Les Claypool doing with all the hippie bands? Last time I checked he was still spawning mosh pits with his brutal bass guitar solos.

  22. stifford  |   Posted on Jun 3rd, 2005

I went to the first Bonnaroo, it was a lot of fun. The only thing that sucks is that fate will put all the bands you want to see on (different) stages at the same time. It’s the choosing that sucks.

Claypool has been hangin’ with the hippies for a while now… ; )

  23. enjoy the shows! I’m sure you have someone, but if you need a guestblogger I can lend a hand.

  24. Bonnaroo actually is a huge amount of fun. I went last year and there’s usually a handful of cool bands. You can watch hours of pedal work if you wish. Kings of leon were there last year, none of the hippies knew who they were so their set was pretty intimate. One piece of advice though, remember where your car is and don’t mark it by a car related landmark, such as “it’s next to the red rainbow bus” cause their will be ten of those.

    Widespread Panic rocks.

  26. Yale Bloor  |   Posted on Jun 4th, 2005

Gummer why so sensitive, we’re just worried that you’ll start sporting dreads and promoting medicinal cannibus instead of Federline baby pix…hopefully the mysterious EJ will keep a tight leash and not let you injest any of the parking lot offerings ie. organic burritos, grilled cheese sandwiches and any other psychedelic offerings from the lost souls wondering the parking lots looking for miricles and there lost VW buses…Ahhhh Jerrys Kids there still out there….be safe Gummer

Cool, Scott. Didn’t know the ‘Roo was of any interest to you. My fiance and I are leaving from PA wednesday night for Tennessee. Maybe I can pick you out of a crowd of 40k? Will you be wearing the tie die or the pooka shell necklace?

Love your site. Been checking it out for year now and your musically choices haven’t let me down (and admittedly you are pretty good at keeping up with the Brit-Brit and LiLo news).

Any bands at the top of your list for must sees?

  30. Jason  |   Posted on Jun 6th, 2005

“Maybe I can pick you out of a crowd of 40k?”

    More like 100k…

I was at Bonnaroo last year and it is a great time. I wish I could go thise year but alas, I graduated college and I have one of those whattayacallits… “real” jobs… and I don’t have vacation time yet. I would go just to see the Drive-by Truckers though, they are the hardest workin band out there right now. And their shows are rawdy and whiskey-drenched! Too bad they didn’t get on of the late night 3-hour spots though.

glad to see you are going.

although “jambands” get a bad rap, they put on some of the best live shows out there today.

    Try to hit up
Particle, Umphreys McGee, Trey Anastasio and STS9 for some face melting.
