I wish they’d actually GOOD videos, “good videos’ to me means there is an original concept, a funny idea, nifty animation, etc etc…not just some dudes riding around in a car for three and a half minutes. But alas –popularity rules, doesn’t it? Green Day will win.

      Pity, really.

      what happend to goldenfiddle????

    7. Wasn’t “Jesus Walks” last year?

and if the video for “Hollaback Girl” is as bad as the song… ugh.

    8. i gotta say i thought the jesus walks video was pretty entertaining, moreso than anything else on that list. although beck deserves a nomination for e-pro.

    9. well, it looks like beck got a nom. for best male vid.

    10. Really, though…does anyone even consider MTV as an arbiter of musical taste anymore? They banned a video by British Sea Power, for the love of god.

      My nominations:

      The Decemberists-16 Military Wives
      Beck-E-Pro
      Chemical Bros./Q-Tip-Galvanize
      Fischerspooner-Just Let Go
      Gorillaz-Dare
      Sleater-Kinney-Entertain

…and a special category should be created for Eels’ video for “Hey Man (Now You’re Really Living)–the most innovative hand-held-walking-around-the-property-lip-syncing moonman.

    11. jenny  |   Posted on Jul 25th, 2005

I am a fan of some of the artists on that list but are you kidding me? Speed of Sound? Hollaback Girl? Those videos can’t even hold a candle to Peter Gabriel’s Sledgehammer and Michael Jackson’s Thriller. Are these really the best videos or the most popular this year?

    12. funny thing is (not haha funny, more whatthe#%(*& funny) i haven’t seen a video on MTV in … years! do they even show videos anymore? every video i’ve seen on cable since 2002 has been either on MTV2, BET, MUN (the latin music video broadcast on channel 200-million-billion-and-three-dozen-hundred), or CMT (yes i watch CMT. i get bored. they show dukes reruns. sue me.).

    13. plain jane  |   Posted on Jul 25th, 2005

How is U2′s “Vertigo” in the Breakthrough category? What did they break through? Not being indie enough?

    14. shaun  |   Posted on Jul 25th, 2005

this is a joke right? chris martin has a seizure in front of a giant lite-brite screen for 4 minutes, and it gets nominated for best video? snoop and pharrell are so stoned they forget to record the video in color, and get nominated for best video? and gwen does a cross between rad flick ‘bring it on’ and not-so-rad pink, and it gets a nod? what the hell?

oh, and that green day song is boring as all hell. i guess… go kanye?!?

    15. Galvanize isn’t even the best video from the Chems this year. If anything Believe featuring Kele from Bloc Party should get its own category it’s that good.

    16. _alex  |   Posted on Jul 25th, 2005

…but, really, what do you guys expect?

    17. Presto  |   Posted on Jul 25th, 2005

Where’s Slim Thug’s nomination? the I Ain’t Heard of That video should atleast be nominated for breakthrough, whatever that means anymore. My favorite video of the last year was New Rhodes’ I Wish I Was You. I want to fly in a light up car and sound like morrissey fronting the strokes too.

    18. Nocturne  |   Posted on Jul 25th, 2005

“…but, really, what do you guys expect?”

Exactly, _alex. This IS MTV we’re talking about. We shouldn’t even expect a miracle. Although we all may wish for one at some time or another…

    19. calliwell  |   Posted on Jul 25th, 2005

Yeah good points have been made here:

      1. The choices suck…that Chris Martin having a seizure in front of a Lite-Brite…perfect explaination for “Clocks pt. 2″ video.

      2. MTV…videos? A thing of the past.

      3. What’d you expect comments…all point worthy.

But here’s the thing I don’t get…shouldn’t the videos really be from the past year? Am I facing some kind of deja vu? That Kanye West video seems like it was two years old and has been revamped 3 fucking times and yet still nominated?

MTV awards have a tendency of doing that. I mean as much as I enjoyed the song “Hey Ya” it seemed it was still up for awards another year later.

      What gives?

    20. I mean they always give a few bones to the talented directors who deserve recognition.

For example, I think Floria Sigisimondi has been making very compelling, well directed music videos for the last decade, but hasn’t been recognized. if there’s any Justice she’ll finally win one for “Blue Orchid”

    21. spo.  |   Posted on Jul 25th, 2005

haha, shaun i like your description for speed of sound. very accurate. the video is as boring as the song.

and i like that mtv had to start another channel on which to show music videos.

    22. deathbysexy  |   Posted on Jul 25th, 2005

Mars Volta up for an award? When did they get on MTV?

    23. rose  |   Posted on Jul 25th, 2005

I quite like MCR’s “Helena” video, if only for the dancing and the dead ballerina’s dress.

    24. Neverthere  |   Posted on Jul 25th, 2005

The video for Hollaback Girl is as bad as that horrible, horrible song.

But it’s MTV so there’s going to be tons of nominations for Gwen, Green Day, Eminem, and Usher.

What a crock of shit that station has become.

    25. Holla  |   Posted on Jul 25th, 2005

Remeber last year when all the cool kids were nominated for the MTV2 award and fucking yellowcard won it???

    26. Ryan  |   Posted on Jul 25th, 2005

What’s with the hate for the “Speed of Sound” video? Mark Romanek did a spectacular job making a boring song look amazing. It’s absolutely beautiful, and is really the only deserving nominee in the category.

Unless the version of “Jesus Walks” that got nominated is the literal version, where Kanye actually WALKS with JESUS. That video is hilarious.

    27. Jere  |   Posted on Jul 25th, 2005

I can’t believe the nominations are even being argued. It’s MTV we are talking about here….

    28. Adam  |   Posted on Jul 25th, 2005

They are from summer to summer, just like the Mercury Prize, and Short List and Whatever. That’s why the awards are in August and not February.

    29. christine  |   Posted on Jul 26th, 2005

      death to mtv

    30. Rich  |   Posted on Jul 26th, 2005

Wow. I’ve never seen any of those videos and only heard one of those songs (Coldplay… and it’s not very good).

I guess I’m officially losing touch with the MTV generation. Oh well.

    31. they still make videos?

    32. Electric.Slide  |   Posted on Jul 26th, 2005

Dude: Yes one of the versions of “Jesus Walks” actually has Kanye hanging out with JC.

I love the scene where Kanye opens the fridge and get’s all bummed out because there’s no food. And then JC pops up and in a “ye have little faith man” fashion leans on the fridge, to which Kanye opens and was surprised that there was sunny D and sandwiches.

Most likely, they’re not voting for THAT version of the video.

    33. Yale Bloor  |   Posted on Jul 26th, 2005

      YYYYYAAAAAAAWWWWWWWNNNNNNN!!!!!

    34. Once upon a time MTV2 played good videos. But that must have been a ploy to get peoples attention. Now I think MTV2 is just a staging area where the MTV shows that really suck are sent for their life after death.

    35. Rusty  |   Posted on Jul 26th, 2005

Coldplay for Video of the year? My God, MTV stinks. It’S all about promotion, not creation.
Coldplay’s video (like the whole album) is lame and un-original.

    36. Gabi  |   Posted on Jul 26th, 2005

I miss the days when MTV acctually show videos, today is not about the videos is about those boring teen reality shows.

    37. Boring teen reality shows where every 2nd thing those vapid blockheads spit out is “I was like…”

MTV stopped being relevant years ago. Now it’s reduced to three letters that make you reflexively roll your eyes.

    38. carolina  |   Posted on Jul 26th, 2005

MYV just needs to stop it already. They suck and everything out there sucks. They should just quit that shit already

    39. I remember whenever the VMAs used to be cool. But now they’re nothing it’s turned into the corporate dick-sucking awards.

    40. Jere  |   Posted on Jul 27th, 2005

The sad thing, is that they are actually appealing to the teens of today with all the shit they broadcast. What does that say about the majority of teenagers? Dumb fucking retards.

    41. With the options for best video, I really hope Kanye gets the award. Its the only video that’s well thought out and creative.

    42. jamie  |   Posted on Aug 10th, 2005

hey wuts up I hope green day wins like every nomination they r up for

    43. trina  |   Posted on Aug 13th, 2005

vote for jay-z you motha loving crack heads!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    44. trina  |   Posted on Aug 13th, 2005

just kidding but vote for jay-z

    45. Chris  |   Posted on Aug 14th, 2005

I am dissapointed in the Nominees for Video of the Year. Wish they could nominate better videos. I dont even know why Kanye West was nominated, his album and songs were big in 04′, not 05′. Coldplay sucks, Hollaback Girl was a good song at first but they play it SoOo much that i am sick of it. Green Day and Snoop Dogg are the only nominees that i thnk fit into the category.

If i were to choose the Nominees this is what they would be.
      And the Nominees are………..
      Video of the Year:
      Eminem, Just Lose It
      50 Cent, Candy Shop
Snoop Dogg, Drop it like its hot
      Green Day, American Idiot
      Daddy Yankee, Gasolina
