Via Ben:

I went to see Clap Your Hands Say Yeah / Grand Buffet / Magnolia Electric Co. last night at the First Unitarian Church in Philly. It was 8000 degrees down there in the church basement and during Magnolia Elec Co.’s set, Jason Molina whipped out a $100 bill and asked how much water was. Someone yelled out “a dollar” and Jason gave $100 to a random crowd member and told him to buy water for everyone. The random guy returned with a tub filled with water bottles and passed them around. Very cool.

Indeed. Thanks for the story Ben.

That is pretty cool. The church basement is notorious for nasty temps in the summer

I would’ve ran off with the hundred and bought myself a new performance fleece.

  3. That was one of the most uncomfortable venues/shows I’ve been to. I definitely sweated right through my shirt.

I didn’t stay for much of Magnolia Elec Co. though, too hot.

It would have been better if he then turned the water into wine?

One final thought was the bill folded or rolled up? I like the complete story!

  6. hope it’s not a case of diabetes insipidus

  8. Hello Stereogummers…

I know that this is normally Stereogum’s thing but today is my Friday and I got my hook up a little early…

Here’s the free album download for White Stripes’s Get Behind Me Satan..

    http://alchemistic.org/mp3/The%20White%20Stripes%20-%20Get%20Behind%20Me%20Satan/

If you already bought it, disregard… If you haven’t, download it for free.. I’ve found that sites that publish this stuff get whacked for bandwidth violations, so get it while you can.

    Have a great weekend!

Yeah I was there, that was a pretty sweet show. And to the person who said it was too hot during Magnolia Electric Co., are you ff’ing serious? It must have cooled down like 15+ degrees after the douchey hipsters left when CYHSY ended. Also, you missed the Magnolia Electric Co./Grand Buffet “Running With the Devil” cover, which was the greatest thing possibly ever to happen anywhere.

  11. Yeah, the Van Halen cover was a lot of fun at the end. Good send-off, and about the only good thing going for Grand Buffet, who sent me out for fresh air once they made it clear just how overbearing they were going to be. I blogged my full review of the show for those who are curious…

And yeah, the water purchase was one of the most generous things I’ve witnessed in quite some time. I nearly collapsed when Dungen was down there a few weeks ago.

  12. Oh, and one other funny thing about the show…

On the flyer listing the show, under CYHSY, it read “holy pitchfork hype band!” Yeah, I think that about sums it up.

  13. headline of the year

  14. the church’s basement is notoriously hot during the summer. the promoter there did benefits for years to help raise cash for an A/C system but i dont know what ever came of that.

ever since passing out at a summertime show many years ago, i made a simple rule — just dont see shows at the church from may to august, no matter how awesome the bill might be.

  15. i agree with the last comment about skipping church shows in the summer. it’s a shame to miss good bands but it is ridiculous down there. i sweat so much during CYHSY that i woke up the next morning dehydrated and with muscle spasms. i drank a lot of water that night too; i guess not enough.

all that aside, the rock show was awesome. it whupped a mule-cow’s ass. well, CYHSY and Magnolia played great sets anyway. my friends and i skipped out on Grand Buffet and went to Little Pete’s for a much-needed respite.

  16. mv, it wasnt the dehydration that did you in — it was the little pete’s! a delicious but potentially deadly combo… :)

Yeah, great show. I left before Jason bought the water to catch the train home, but that’s amazing. CYHSY effing rule, no hating :(
