  1. horrible?

  2. Really? I like it.

  3. robert  |   Posted on Sep 20th, 2005

i admire that they’re trying something different, but this is horrible.

  4. Cutter  |   Posted on Sep 20th, 2005

That bass riff sounds a bit like the theme from “Batman.” Other than that It’s not a bad song.

  5. shithead  |   Posted on Sep 20th, 2005

you like shit mofo because mofo you are shit

  6. kennethmakepeace  |   Posted on Sep 20th, 2005

it’s kind of good. but it doesn’t touch any of their past singles in terms of that “instant classic” quality they all had

  7. I have to agree with robert, everything about this song blows. That bassline sounds like a theme from a Saturday morning cartoon. And what’s with Julian’s singing about 35 seconds in? I realize they want to try something different after making Is This It 2.0 aka Room on Fire but this is horrible and sounds nothing like the Strokes that I knew.

  8. Wow, unexpected.

I’d rather they try something new and fail then listen to Is This it? 3.0

  9. Not the same ol’ same ol’, which is good. I’m excited to hear the whole album, see what else they got going on.

  10. klowners  |   Posted on Sep 20th, 2005

What kind of freaks dont like saturday morning cartoons?? who are you people???

the song is not bad — and this is different for the strokers (at least for part of the tune you actually hear the singer’s voice….i mean like, his human voice, not the Ned-Voice-Box he’s been using to get famous and avoid criticism on his otherwise shitty voice…..)

  11. klowners  |   Posted on Sep 20th, 2005

You say that like it’s a bad thing — what kind of freaks dont like saturday morning cartoons?? who are you people???

  13. I’m not sure what I think of that on the the first listen. It kind of sounds like The Strokes covering a Franz track. It doesn’t really do much and it needs a fucking hook. But I still kind of like it…

  14. klowners  |   Posted on Sep 20th, 2005

holy crap! i am really good at posting things to the internet!

i always wondered what my thought process looked like…..

  15. Hoarse  |   Posted on Sep 20th, 2005

Julian’s singing is better. he doesn’t sound as bored.

  16. mattshu  |   Posted on Sep 20th, 2005

Somebody’s been listening to Queens of the Stone Age.

-and I like his “bored” style rather than this screaming.

3.0 might have been nice if this is the alternative,

  17. mike  |   Posted on Sep 20th, 2005

hmmm, I like it though even though it isn’t innovative. I am glad that they will be trying something new on this album.

  18. sounds like they actually learned how to rock out, as opposed to just kinda lazily rocking.

i dig the tune a lot

and the bassline is reminiscent of Peter Gunn, not Batmann

  19. arya  |   Posted on Sep 20th, 2005

    it rocks.

  20. strokemyweiner  |   Posted on Sep 20th, 2005

gawd…..freaks tryin to talk like theys no someting..da only ting these Strokers can stroke are punk freak scot’s tiny itsy bitsy weiner…bs losers

  21. AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL.

I had to check my calendar to see that this was indeed, not april fool’s and you hadn’t posted a System of a Down song instead.

    AWFUL.

  22. sweet, more people to jump off the band wagon

  23. yeah, i actually DID think scott put up System of a Down for a sec. but oh well, life goes on!

  24. Adam  |   Posted on Sep 20th, 2005

I like it. Yeah, it’s kind of harsh at first, but the payoff at :50 or so where they break into the hook makes for some nice interplay. It’s just one song, anyway, so I think it’s a bit soon to be doing any bandwagon jumping (on or off).

  25. rochinho  |   Posted on Sep 20th, 2005

I must be a gimp because I can’t download it. Instructions, please?

  26. Another_Ryan  |   Posted on Sep 20th, 2005

Not bad, though not, at least upon my initial listen, really that great. My knee-jerk reaction, upon hearing the opening bass riff was “ok… they’ve stopped ripping off Television and the Cars and moved on to ripping off the Cramps.”

  27. I just don’t know yet. I imagine it is going to take a bunch of listens to get use to this (dare I say) progression

Actually, I think it’s only a progression in that it differs greatly from the first two albums… it’s going to be hard to top “is this it?”

  28. i fucking dig it around the 49 second mark. glad they are trying something new. DON’T HATE!

  29. brendan  |   Posted on Sep 21st, 2005

thanks to the links given but in lieu of it being a grower (say after 12 listens)…I don’t think this one’s gonna be my fave for now.

  30. brendan  |   Posted on Sep 21st, 2005

one more thing, based on their new sound, i bet they dont wear converse anymore. heh :)

    gone is ze old skool.

  31. considering Room On Fire topped Is This It for me, this stands a good chance i think :)

  32. One of the best bands of our time is trying really hard to shed the bagage of being really cool, and having people write comments about them on the internets.

    Dig:
somebody hung up the phone, and julian sounds good.

    new semigloss production

prominent bassline (enter sandman speed up?)

    tempo changes, ala Franz

same lyrical theme: detached romanticism, mythic cool

It’s not the instant indie dance party jam of 12:51, or the instant trip to the basement to check out dad’s records of “Last Night,” but let’s give it some time. at least a few more hours.

  33. I like it.

that opening bassline sounds like it was lifted from Prodigy’s “Hot Ride”

  34. Gonzo  |   Posted on Sep 21st, 2005

    They rule.
    you’re just haters

  35. Phil Urich  |   Posted on Sep 21st, 2005

It’s . . . Shiv said above “It kind of sounds like The Strokes covering a Franz track” and I have to kindof agree (and by a crazy coincidence Winamp randomly popped up the daft punk remix of “Take Me Out” immediately after the song ended, though that’s certainly not the Franz song that it’s most like) . . . I’m a bit torn, but it shows a kind of eclectic potential, makes me think that the new album, well . . .

Actually, it leaves me scratching my head as to what the new album might be like. But that’s a good thing, from a marketing perspective, ’cause now I’m damn curious. The song itself seems slightly schizophrenic, and my response is likewise. Not sure at all how this song will sit after stewing for a few days . . . nice to know that The Strokes are experimenting, though.

  36. Noisy. They used to be such a nice little pop band.

  37. What the…!?
I’ve been reading the commenst and… “Batman Theme”? “Peter Gunn Theme” (I would rather mention B-52′s’ “Planet Claire” bass riff wich has an obvious Peter Gunn rip-off with an edge)?
And then coparisons to Franz Ferdinand? QOTSA? System od a Down??? Cramps??? “Enter Sandman”???
    Even Prodigy’s “Hot Ride”???
Definitely whatever The Strokes do we will judge them with comments based in our own knowedge… I’m sure they listen and are more influenced by bands a little older that the Ferdinands or Prodigy.

My opinion: this song is a filler. They had fillers in the first two records, why leak the lead single? Blur did something alike when they released “Don’t bomb when you are the bomb” as a sample for the “new” sound of their latest “Think Tank”…

  38. opraNoodlmantra  |   Posted on Sep 21st, 2005

no, no “juicebox” is supposed to be the first single.

“One of the best bands of our time…”

Wait – are we still talking about The Strokes? Yes? Really? OK, then….

    hahahahahh…

Best bands of our time… ha.

    Go away corporate shill.

  40. Adrian  |   Posted on Sep 21st, 2005

Well, if it is the first single better have a SUPER GREAT video to sell it trouhg the eyes.
I like the song but I agree with someone who wrote before about having a “no-grower” here.

  41. Well. Hmmm. Bass line is catchy, and I agree, I heard a Franz-like inflection in the opening second of the vocals. Not unpleasant and exciting to hear something new.

I envision this as a “Track 9″ out of 11 tracks and not really as the first single to be released, per se.

The end of the song sounds more like “The Strokes” we “know & love” than the entire first half of the song.

  42. deep  |   Posted on Sep 21st, 2005

this sucks like my grandma tits

  43. inky  |   Posted on Sep 21st, 2005

So nobody minds Julian “rapping” the first two lines? It makes my skin crawl.

The vocals at the end are almost awesome enough to make up for the rest of the song though. I still can’t decide.

  44. R^d!w  |   Posted on Sep 21st, 2005

I love screaming parts of this song and bass riff is simply clever,.. definitly not bad invitation to new album. I am looking FRW!

  45. okan  |   Posted on Sep 21st, 2005

I listened to 5 time straight just to make sure I wasn’t missing something. I wasn’t, it sucks.
The bass riff sounds like something a tweeny garage pop-punk band would play to add something “fresh”.

  46. dennis  |   Posted on Sep 21st, 2005

    what a piece of shit.

  47. dennis  |   Posted on Sep 21st, 2005

  48. Love it.

ya know what, everyone loves to hate the Strokes way too much.
first people complain that the Is This It didn’t sound as “raw” as the Modern Age EP.
then they complained that Room on Fire was like Is This It pt. 2 (which it clearly wasn’t… there were new musical elements and textures brought into the sound, a la synth style guitars, etc.)
now this. they completely switch their sound around, and of course, everyone hates it (or should i say, claims to hate it).
you people are so bitter that it disgusts me. they’re not aiming to be Radiohead or the Arcade Fire or some other pretentious cerebral music. the Strokes are simple, straighforward rock n roll. take it for what it is and quit over-judging every shred of music that they put out.

  50. the strokes are my favorite band, and i absolutely hate this song.

  51. i’d rather listen to the darkness than this. the first 30 seconds are especially cringeworthy.

  52. calliwell  |   Posted on Sep 21st, 2005

It sounds like Franz Ferdinand. Though at towards the end, that would of made a great song on its own…

I don’t know, I’m still curious about the other tracks.

  53. I, too, cringed when I heard the first 30 seconds of the song, but by the time it was over I started to kind of like it. I think I will enjoy more after a few listens. It does leave me scratching my head wondering what the rest of the album will be like, but I’m all for making things interesting. I hate it when bands are predictable.

  54. hummus  |   Posted on Sep 21st, 2005

The song’s bassline makes me want to find my old Colecovision and play Spy Hunter. But I like it still.

  55. start your own band— you fucking HATERS!

  56. steve  |   Posted on Sep 21st, 2005

the strokes are my favorite band and i was dissappointed initially with this song, as i was with 12:51. after 5 or 6 listens though, just like 12:51, i’m diggin it. certainly don’t see the franz ferdinand comparison. reminds me more of where they were headed with “end has no end.” excited to hear the rest.

  57. quill  |   Posted on Sep 21st, 2005

the bassline scares me. its a bit noveltyish and silly. and the ‘standing in the lightfield’ psyched out line is just shit i think. i think julians gotten happy and normal on us. its not hitting me at all like they used to. fuck. ill still probably buy the album and the single mind.. perhaps a nice b-side.

maybe theyll say “ho ho we leaked that to give you all a scare, shit isnt it?”

shouldve known once i caught sight of julians godawful tattoo

  58. quill  |   Posted on Sep 21st, 2005

yep its farrr tooo ‘Vines-y’ for comfort. i hate that bassline! its like…uh…something from some australian kids show. kid detectives. please dont let this song touch the new album. id have to question someones love for the first 2 albums if they like this thing

  59. quill  |   Posted on Sep 21st, 2005

aswell as the song i hope the ‘first impressions of earth’ is bullshit. ok i do sortof like the last minute or so of the song

  60. quill  |   Posted on Sep 21st, 2005

aswell as the song i hope the ‘first impressions of earth’ title is bullshit. ok i do sortof like the last minute or so of the song

  61. i love albert hammond’s guitar playing so much and i always thought the strokes would be perfect if only julian would sing into the microphone. i should freakin love this song.
someone tell me, why don’t i?
it’s the goofy bass line intro, isn’t it?
anyway, i do believe there’s hope. certainly there is more than just this one potentially-not-so-bad-after-repeated-listenings song on the cd? right?

  62. why does it feel like they had three seperate songs and put them together up to 49 sec, and the middle and the actual strokes song ie.the last minute?

  63. craptain crunch  |   Posted on Sep 21st, 2005

i have come round on this song. it IS special.

  64. kakvox  |   Posted on Sep 21st, 2005

Only listened once, but methinks it isn’t some of their best worl ever. Yeah, not really digging it too much.

  65. shugga  |   Posted on Sep 22nd, 2005

i think it’s cool. the peter gunn thing underneath the singsong chorus kicks ass. as well as it’s disappearance in the last third of the song. it’s got energy and dynamics. cool.

  66. Jude  |   Posted on Sep 22nd, 2005

PLEASE HELP ME! I LOVE The Strokes and have been waiting with baited breath to hear their new stuff, but I can’t get either of these links to work. Could some nice person please forward it to me by email or something (jude70_2@hotmail.com) so I can hear it (and hopefully manage to get it on my iPod….if I can figure out how!). Thank you!!! Love ya xxxx

  68. quill  |   Posted on Sep 22nd, 2005

‘kbryan’ = typical indieblog bitch. how boring.

  69. kbryan  |   Posted on Sep 22nd, 2005

“quill” = one of the butt hurt fanboys, here is a flower for you. /cry

  70. Mayhemindahood  |   Posted on Sep 22nd, 2005

This song is pretty damn good. I see alot of people on here commenting that they dont like it, or even hate it. But by the intelligence of their arguments, those people just dont like good music. Strokes covering Franz Ferdinand? Franz Ferdinand is a strokes cover band, so that would be like The Strokes covering the Strokes. Some other dude said “it sounds like theyve been listening to Queens of the Stone Age”. Ummmmmm, okay dude.

This song is tough, i love the new production. It took me a couple listens to get into, but then again so has every one of my favorite all time albums.

  71. if the production was a bit different, and the first 30 seconds were revamped a little bit, i would love this song.

  72. yolaywho  |   Posted on Sep 22nd, 2005

yeh its gas laugh to see people who are dissapointed with their favourite group. indieblog bitch indeed

  73. yolaywho  |   Posted on Sep 22nd, 2005

it is moderately acceptable though. maybe in the context of the album evrything will become clear. for now though the bass seems to fuckin batman

  75. !Batman!  |   Posted on Sep 23rd, 2005

I think juicebox is the most contrasting songs brought about by the strokes, its riffs maybe a little different but who honestly gives a fuck!! You all criticise the bass riff but weezers hash pipe has a similar opening riff and thats one of their most renown songs!! i think its time they tried something a little different and unique and a true cult strokes follower would agree with their new approach!!!! JuiceBox Rulez You Batman THeme Haters Are Vaginal Discharge!!!

  76. !Batman!  |   Posted on Sep 23rd, 2005

And it sounds more like “Blues brothers” to me ASSHOLES!!!!

it sucks like your mom is sucking me off right now.

  78. geoff  |   Posted on Sep 23rd, 2005

    i dont get it either…
for once every group member is stepping outside or maybe even inside his covert comfort zone and is playing/singing out of his balls and everyone hates it. every truly GREAT band has to step up his music periodically in their careers. its called maturation. some do it well and some do it awefully (weezers new album is an example of it, infact its the most uninspired immature album from an experienced group i’ve ever heard) if you want lounge music i can give you the names of a couple great electronica groups. this is rock. personally i would be sick to hear any more boop-de-boop-doo-boop-boop from nikolai, the bands bassist and i think the distortion is perfect for the mood this song is trying to set. slight reverb is icing on the cake. comparisons to franz ferdinand and queens of the stone age are a joke. and oh by the way, i absolutely hate how EVERYTHING is a knockoff…but then again we’re talking about really inspired music appreciators here :-p tempo changes in all kinds of music are nothing new guys, like as in centuries old. you guys really make me laugh

  79. Heppy  |   Posted on Sep 23rd, 2005

I think this song is AMAZING! i think it’s great that they’re trying something a bit different! and its an awesome song! Can’t wait to see them on tour

  80. youpare  |   Posted on Sep 23rd, 2005

no matter what way you look at it or try convince yrself – that song is very easily forgotten. and just average, if not really bad.

  81. It reminds me a ton of “Planet of Sound” by the Pixies. In a good way.

  82. thomas  |   Posted on Sep 23rd, 2005

eh, the song is all right for me.. nothing spectacular though. reminds me of how pissed I was to hear “beverly hills” for the first time.. knowing it was Weezer’s first “single”. but, for me, in the end it was the worst song on the album and overall I found the album to be a quality release.

keep in mind that the singles are the songs with the most commercial/general/radio appeal, not the best of the album.

high hopes for the rest of it :D

  83. =O..yo lo encontré maravilloso!
    tiene un estilo distinto
    pero jamás es horribvle
encuentro que su músik cada vez es mejor
y que inspiran a mas de una persona a valorar la buena musica

    saludos ^^

    Strokera..

  84. Gerry  |   Posted on Sep 23rd, 2005

WHOA! EWWW! That stinks! It’s like they had a horrible song and forgot all of the bridges. Take the guitar pedals away from Giuseppe.(

  85. Gerry  |   Posted on Sep 23rd, 2005

    Or Paolo.

  86. rainbowinthedark  |   Posted on Sep 23rd, 2005

    damn dirty wops

  87. Juice Box sounds like a 3rd rate stock ‘thrash-metal’ riff that every band in the SF Bay Area was doing from 87′-89′. Christ, any 15 year old metal dude with a peavey amp, ProCo Rat and Jackson clone guitar could produce this riff in his sleep.

Then the song slides into the ‘major progression’ that sounds like an outake from an 80′s Rush album.

The produciton value is suspect, the song writing is not there and the lyrics are flat out stupid.

The Jokes, I mean Stokes can’t even reinvent themselves with any gravitas. Once again, all the access to coke, hot sluts and recording industry blow hards does not me you can WRITE A SONG!

  88. Matthew Jerome  |   Posted on Sep 23rd, 2005

I always thought that the secret ingredient to The Strokes recipe for cool, was their innocence, y’know? Yeah, they’re decadent and jaded, but you come away from their albums feeling like, at their core, they believe in love and sincerity. It’s always a surprise when they–the arbiters of “cool”–opt for a cheesy video game reference. Even when the lyrics come off trite, it makes you grin and think: just some NYC kids, gettin’ their kicks. This new track is different, which is important for the guys this time around. The base line reminds me of Peter Gunn and Spy Hunter. Overall, the track sounds like a mash-up of Nine Black Alps and The Murder City Devils with Jim Morrison up front. I think it will take this track a little bit of time to catch on, because it truly is different, but it’ll catch on in a big way. I also think it’s probably not reflective of the rest of the album. Mark my words, this is going to have a real effect on the direction of American pop. Kids, I think, are tired of Franz’s disco (nobody’s listening to that new one stateside), and they definitely weren’t gonna’ go for The Strokes 3.0. Cool track.

  89. Mats  |   Posted on Sep 23rd, 2005

hey…the sites you posted have been blocked and Im DYING to hear this new track…some advice???

  90. rosie  |   Posted on Sep 23rd, 2005

it took them two years to make this? it’s terrible.

this kind of stuff always baffles me, because it’s not like they’re doing the anti-pop thing – like so many people have pointed out they are essentially a pop band – yet there is absolutely nothing endearing/catchy/interesting/danceable about this song. it sounds lazy and is frustratingly non-catchy. how can they run out of ideas so fast? i seriously think every other song they’ve done (even that “post modern girls” song with regina spektor, a freaking b-side for gods sake) is better than this. and it’s a single?

and this is never a good sign; my 12-year-old bro (who worships ac/dc, led zep and the hives… he’s still learning) said this is his favourite strokes song by far.

  91. lazey looper  |   Posted on Sep 24th, 2005

I think the first single from the stokes.. juce box.. is the worst that ive heard so far from the band.. but i dont give hopes off yet.. lets see whats on the rest of the album in 2006. Im a huge The Strokes fan.. so lets not give up hopes.. everyone makes a bad single once anyway..

  93. i cried when i heard this song for the first time. so shocking. i love the strokes but… i can’t love this song. i want my old strokes back. i’d rather hear the “is this it” song again.

  94. Nick  |   Posted on Sep 24th, 2005

The song is a grower. Initially i thought it sounded a bit ordinary but that chorus is in my head and i can’t get it out. Its like 12:51 in that i felt it was dull to start with and now i worship the song. And anyone who says it rubbish i’d love to see them do better.

  95. nick  |   Posted on Sep 24th, 2005

the bass reminds me scarely of stereograms walkie talkie man

  96. most of your opinions are the same
its different and you dont like it
well if you wanted a repeat of room on fire
you should have bought the record again
the times they are a changin and so are the stokes
    FOR THE BETTER

I think Juice Box is a bit of shock to everyone- no one was reali expectin this ‘cool, superheroish’ outcome, but the strokes are appreciated for being different- i’ve listened to the song more then once, (yes over again) and im easily (after initially being confused) adjusting to the ‘original’ base line, – just maybe they can be forgiven for this, most likely
hope Nick ( if he is the guy that plays base) can cope with playing this.
Just like so many people have said about 12:51- its rare to like a band where you like every single song they do ( but after forcing yourself to listen to it a few more times you hear it from different sides), the song isn?t that bad, maybe just a little (to?) unexpected ? I mean it?s been 2 years what on earth were strokes fans to expect.
Very glad their they?re not becoming repetitive

  99. diss  |   Posted on Sep 24th, 2005

I think this is just a bad song. Like someone said in the comments before, if the Strokes came out tomorrow and said “haha it’s a fake, shit isn’t it?” i’d breathe a huge sigh of relief and stop trying to trick myself into liking it. The production and the newer sound has got me excited about the album but this is still just a bad song.

  100. OK, I also felt that “wtf?” feeling upon first listen, but now I think it’s really good….just listen to it 3 or 4 times, it really kicks in once you get into it. And now that I’m familiar with it, I find it has that great Strokes thing about it…the way they don’t overplay a riff/hook and let it become boring – they play the good bits just enough to make you want more, and then snap, it’s over too soon, and already I’m finding that I’m playing it again and again.
The bass/guitar relationship is good and creates lots of subtle harmonies and pleasing tones, to my ears. I likee.
