Never much of a Dead fan. The only thing I own is the “Fade to Gray” single, and probably because it was on gray vinyl. But… out in Tucson a few weeks ago, the local listener supported station was playing some Dead live material, and, for the most part, it rocked. I think it was circa ’71, and sure enough the band went off on a jam on pretty much every song, but they held it together, and there was always an edge to it. Maybe this was before the drugs etc. dulled that edge. And I saw the “Festival Express” movie a few months ago, and the Dead (’69/’70 I believe) did the song I only know as a radio hit for the Black Crowes, and that too rocked, in particular Garcia’s psychedelic guitar solo that closed the piece. So in my own ongoing revisionist book of great Rock Music, the Dead are moving up. Some of that early era live stuff might be worth further investigation.

OK, drewo im glad you are starting to appreciate GD but theres some things that need to be cleared up. theres no song called fade to gray. you seem to have combined the song titles “touch of grey” and “not fade away” but really thats cute, pfff. and another thing, yes the dead rocked, and there will never be another band like them ever. as far as your assumption of the pre drug era dulling the edge theory your dead wrong. i could give you any number of shows from any generation and you see they have always rocked. 60′s, 70′s 80′s and 90′s all have their own flavor, you have alot to learn before you should start throwing your opinions around.

The dead sucks? How do u explain 5 decades of unbelievable faithfullness to an incredible band by millions worldwide. All you got is they suck. ROlling stones granted Jerry Garcia #14 on the 100 greatest guitarists of all time. Maybe you should read up a little before you shoot your opinions around. Oh yea and for all that believe deadheads are druggies think again. Maybe some are, but I for one dont use drugs and still appreciate their longevity and their amazing musical talents. Maybe they are potheads, but isnt even a “drug”. You cant name one band in the last decade who even touches their talent or togetherness. Maybe you think that hippies suck or they smell bad, but the Grateful Dead is an amazing piece of American music history.
