This made my day. Hall and Oates go toe to toe with McDonald and Loggins in a back alley contest, with tragic results. Watch “Yacht Rock #2.” (Link via Ben.)

Takes me back to the 1980 Grammys…

  • Record of the Year “Sailing,” Christopher Cross
  • Album of the Year Christopher Cross, Christopher Cross
  • Song of the Year “Sailing,” Christopher Cross
and yes, the Kiss Of Death Award:
  • Best New Artist Christopher Cross

“Yacht Rock #1″ (Jeff “Skunk” Baxter tells Michael McDonald to write a hit … or else!) deserves a shoutout too. As I’ve said before Self’s (toy instrument) cover of the resulting Doobie tune is perhaps my favorite cover song of all time.

I’m gonna watch “Yacht Rock #4″ now. Toto writes “Rosanna”!

PREVIOUSLY: “If you don’t get why Meg White’s great, crank up the Toto.” (We linked to Jefito on that Toto post … how appropriate that today he’s sharing a ton of Hall & Oates.)

  • michael mcdonald, doobie brothers
    Michael McDonald, Doobie Brother
The Doobie Brothers, circa 1976. Top (L to R); Jeff Baxter, Keith ...
Doobie Brother Michael McDonald is again on this new album with Chris ...
Doobie Brothers: Best Band Name Ever, Awesome Enduring Tunes
Doobie Brothers is indisputably the best band name of all time ... One of these men stands out as a legend: Michael McDonald. What a voice. What a man. It's hard not to have a huge crush on MMcD's singing style. It's just so wonderfully recognizable.

Heh… Haul’n'Ass are in town tonight here in Baltimore.

    2. hahaha! i put up a link for this a while back. it is by far some of the most entertaining material the internet has to offer. i could go on quoting from this series forever but i’ll contain myself to one…

“do you even know what the kids on the street are listening to?? DISCO motherf–ker!”

    3. yacht rock is awesome. i spent a whole month obsessed with watching and rewatching the episodes. but why no mention of #5?

    4. Yay for the Self love! My favorite band EVER.

Though apparently Matt Mahaffey is currently conspiring with Jeff Turzo (ex-God Lives Underwater) to create my new favorite band ever.

    5. Michael McDonald was proud when he heard that Self song, right?

    6. And Kenny Loggins, too?

    7. I used to be friends with Christopher Cross. True story.

    8. Yacht Rock getting some love? Sweeeeet.

      Smoooooth.

Yacht Rock is fantastic and apparently internet-reknowned. I’m surprised that you didn’t check out the Channel 101 show Sarah Silverman’s in when you mentioned her the other day, Most Extraordinary Space Investigations. Or the amazing House of Cosby’s theme song. Or all of Twigger’s Holiday’s soundtrack which is the punk-rock Peanuts gang movie musical.

      Channel 101 is smooth.

    10. I’m glad you finally found Yacht Rock. It’s unbelievable. In October, I wrote on Yacht Rock and the genius of “What A Fool Believes”:

And you gotta check out Yacht Rock #5 – it inspired me to revisit “Thriller.” Now that’s smooth!

Yacht Rock 1 and 2 were great, then 3 was so-so. I assumed the Yacht Rock party was over, then episodes 4 and 5 were the best yet.

These guys do great work, and the funniest part is it’s all very, very close to the truth (I did some checking, and all the collaborations are true).

P.S. The comment problem is driving me mad. I wrote an eight-page screed/rant about the Hall of Fame and Miles Davis that is ESSENTIAL READING. It’s supremely unfair that you all couldn’t experience it.

Here’s a variation on the theme: “Yacht Pop”

I love Yacht Rock as there is some reality in it. I’ve personally met or worked with almost every character in it except Chris Cross.

As a child I was family friends with members of Toto. Members of the Doobies would come around too. Seriously, lots of these guys hung out with each other so this show is not too far off the mark. They all lived in throughout the San Fernando Valley though not Marina Del Rey.

Kenny Loggins is a nebbish. Steve Perry is super nice.
