You’d think sharing a mashup of one of the best songs of 2004 and one of the worst songs of 2005 would be enough for this post, but it’s not. What’s missing is the exact sound my gum made when the vocals came on and my jaw dropped. It was literally a squish with an audible question mark. This mp3 is one “doesn’t care about black people” short of being all of 2005 in one song.

    ummmmm… i’m confused
which was the best song of 2005? my humps or that arcade fire one?

  2. katie  |   Posted on Dec 13th, 2005

best song of 2005 wasnt even an option. follow the links and you’ll see that tunnels was best of 04, and humps was worst of 05.

  3. spokenwawa  |   Posted on Dec 13th, 2005

    one listen and its deleted.

but you know that the ‘george bush doesnt care about black people’ moment is going to be mentioned for years and years to come.

  4. seamus  |   Posted on Dec 13th, 2005

that was fucking painful…i feel dumber for having even heard it…

  5. Jesus, hasn’t this mash-up trend overstayed its fifteen minutes by now? And I thought the Jay-Z/Weezer mash-up was the worst we could do…

  6. calliwell: it's mah birthday!  |   Posted on Dec 13th, 2005

P.S. My new favorite thing in the world is searching for “My Humps” on Google Video. I highly recommend it.

  10. that song blows

  11. Fred  |   Posted on Dec 13th, 2005

“George Bush doesn’t care about black people” is the new “Can’t we all just get along”.

  12. jfantastic  |   Posted on Dec 13th, 2005

    dude,

it sounded like someone was drunk at a party and played both songs at the same time over top of each other…

usually I think of a “Mash up” where you mash or edit the songs together in a way to get a new rocking song

    that just sucked. bad.

    worst mash up ever.

  13. “Mash up” = the most annoying word, and idea, ever.

  14. The Slack Album should have been the end of mash-ups…

Also, I’m a firm believer that mash-ups should enhance the value of both songs involved, not just have cute titles.

  15. Shambles  |   Posted on Dec 14th, 2005

That BLP woman is pug fugly without makeup. Those sellouts are worthless POS’s.

  16. come on, its not that terrible. not as bad as Q-unit at least.

  17. Kristina  |   Posted on Dec 14th, 2005

My head hurts from just hearing that song. Completely awful.

  18. Boner Bro.  |   Posted on Dec 14th, 2005

That is what we call a “stunner” in the business.

  19. I once mashed up Two Headed Boy and My Humps….it wasn’t that good…or professional….or mashed up, but you can hear it here:

    http://www.loutamposi.net/music/two_headed_humps.aif

  20. I for one have always thought that mash-ups were terrible. I don’t think they even deserved 15 minutes.

“Wow, they put some pop song chorus into a RAP Song?! Who the hell would have thought to do THAT?!”

All it is is computer geeks finding their inner-Puffy.

Frankly I think re-mixes are also almost always bad too. They’re rarely anything but derivative.

It’s like, “Yep. That’s what that song would have sounded like if it were just more repetitive and had a crappy house drum beat”

  21. Every time a mash-up is posted, the same exact discussion is made on how awful they are and blah blah blah. Yeah… we get your point. Wait a sec, what IS your point?

Don’t feel the need to bash something every. single. damn. time. a remix or mash-up surfaces, just because, you know, the original is like waaaaay better.

Hell, of course it is! It’s like saying after a movie, “well, the book was better.” That shouldn’t make the second derivation an abomination by default.

  22. The Playlist  |   Posted on Dec 14th, 2005

holy shit, that mashup was a godawful abortion.

  23. You know, I go to work to escape the sound of my childred yelling for no reason and this is what I get in its place. Where do I go now, Stereogum? Where do I GO?!

  24. The Playlist  |   Posted on Dec 14th, 2005

grow up Christy, Stereogum is nothing more than a Hurray for Music Streetteam. Don’t delude yourself anymore than you already obviously do.

This mash-up is so bad it’s making the related Funeral relatives roll over in their graves.

  25. that’s Whoring for Music

  26. Sorry jerry, but I don’t comment every time. It’s just that I’ve been wondering ever since the Gray Album what it was that I wasn’t seeing. I’m just glad to see that others share my confusion.

The problem isn’t just that these mashups are lesser than the sum of their parts, it’s that they never get beyond the originaly concept. The actual execution lacks true creativity. Quite frankly, they’re the novelty music of this decade; amusing in concept, but lacking in any real staying power. But hey, they’re still better than “The Streak”.

It’s fine if you want to go on listening to this. Whether I don’t like them should have no bearing on your enjoyment. A lot of people will swear by their lives that Weird Al is a genius, and I’m not going to argue with them.

It’s just that I think music listeners should demand something more than the sound of two cds played at once.

  27. The Playlist,

I’ve got a crack team trying to decipher your message and until the windtalkers get here, we are stumped. And I for one am confused as hell.

So, how is it I am deluding myself?

  28. oh my stars and garters. this mashup is so awesomely bad that it almost translates into awesomely amazing because it’s at that special, special zenith of “genius bad.”

  29. c’mon the slack album was pretty good…

i liked it better than the grey album…

    perfume-v my thug?? banannas

  30. davidm  |   Posted on Dec 14th, 2005

wow, this makes stereogum, but no mention of Clap Your Hands being on Conan this week?

  31. fido  |   Posted on Dec 14th, 2005

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah are gonna be on Conan? When?

  32. Dude, this mashup is actually pretty well-done… it’s no Bloc Party vs Pussycat Dolls but it’s in key – which is something that almost NEVER happens.

  33. davidm  |   Posted on Dec 14th, 2005

Fido – Clap Yours Hands is on Conan this riday, the 16th.

  34. that was atrocious.

mash-ups suck in general i think. they’re very rarely well done. someone mentioned The Slack Album, which is the only good one i’ve heard. that is how you do it… too bad you need Foobar to play it.

  35. filtow  |   Posted on Dec 14th, 2005

i can’t honestly be the only person here who actually likes this mash-up, can i? both charming and delightful, best new[ish] song i’ve heard all morning!

  36. i stand corrected, you don’t need Foobar to play The Slack Album. yay!

  37. phishy  |   Posted on Dec 14th, 2005

    holy wow. disturbing.

  38. Why are so many people here threatened by mash-ups? Like it threatens either original song in any capacity. How bout not listening to it if it bothers you so much? Some of us find mash-ups facinating and distinctly current. And sometime they’re extremely well done.

  39. Turney  |   Posted on Dec 14th, 2005

    Well, I think it’s entertaining.
Anyone here who just spits and turns their head at it is just an elitist asshole that hates anything relatively mainstream.

Now, I’m not saying My Humps is a good song.
    But, it is catchy.
And that’s a start… and… it has Arcade Fire music behind it.

Obviously, the person who made it did it out of amusement. No one that would like Arcade Fire would like Black-Eyed Peas… Not too much, anyway. Someone probably just saw the humour in it.

Get over yourselves, people. It’s just music.

  40. laura  |   Posted on Dec 14th, 2005

hey, i thought it was fun. thanks for another wonderful post. i love yall.

  41. Just thought i would drop a line and say thanks for making me laugh…everyones comments are just so funny!!…well, at least a collaboration of comments… see, i’m the dude that “mashed” these two lovely tracks together, how i found this page, i have no idea. I was actually looking at what people were posting about Q-Unit (my other mash) and found this. I laughed my ass off at all these comments. First of all, this song was thrown together for fun. I was screwing around with the Arcade fire, just seeing if i could make an instrumental out of it (was even toying with the idea of doing a whole arcade fire mash album), and i had that humps acapella laying around, and just for fun i threw it on top of the instrumental. Well, it didn’t sound half bad, but i only half assed it anyway. It wasn’t really something serious i did, just for fun. Hell, i didn’t even think that people listened to it because when i posted it to GYBO (mashup message board) i only got 2 comments on it and then it disapeared into the rest of the posts. So i thought it was dead, well, apparently Stereogum revived it and now everyone wants it dead again..LOL…oh the drama, you don’t want no drama, drama…anyways, i had to comment cuz it cracks me up how many people are so “SERIOUS” about music that the word “mashup” offends them. Thank GOD for the few people that did stick up for it and actually liked it, because its those people who are “keepin’ it real”…everyone else just likes to talk shit…especially if it ain’t “indie”. I’m not saying you can’t think it sounds bad…but people who are like “i hate mashups in general” are just ignorant. But thats cool cuz ignorance makes us diverse! PEACE!

PS To the people that actually liked it and stuck up for it, rock on!

    TheSilenceXperiment

  42. Dear Silence Experiment-

    Please keep pissing off rockists.

I really like your Arcade Fire/BEP mashup. I didn’t want to but I do. And I hate “my humps.” But this was just ridiculous enough to work.

And I really like some of the Q-unit tracks as well.

    Totes respect.

  43. it has a good beat….

    & it’s easy to dance to….

  44. Jack  |   Posted on Dec 16th, 2005

I could follow the trend and say I hate this.

So I will follow my own advice and say I hate this. On one hand you have a song that is one of the best songs I have heard, if not the best ever track one on a record; and a videoclip song. Yes, a song that ‘s popularity relies completely on four different costume changes in three minutes, and a female arse taking up half the screen.

    Having a song that sings:
“They say I’m really sexy, The boys they
    wanna sex me”

I’m pretty sure ‘sex’ isn’t a verb in the real world.

Couldn’t these mashers used a crappier song to mix with The Arcade Fire???

  45. tr.v. sexed, sex·ing, sex·es

    1. To determine the sex of (an organism).
    2. Slang.
    1. To arouse sexually. Often used with up.
    2. To increase the appeal or attractiveness of. Often used with up.

  46. Jack  |   Posted on Dec 16th, 2005

Well it looks like I am wrong. Thanks Jim.

But when those boys just want to sex her, shouldn’t they know her sex already.

  47. hahaha! that’s so wrong but so entertaining. good work.

and anyone even considering ‘sexing’ that woman from BEP needs their head examined. she looks like a bulldog chewing a wasp.

  48. JaiBee  |   Posted on Dec 17th, 2005

That shouldve been appalling, worthy of stoning you off the internet.

    It was genius.

    *applauds*

  49. Dude I loved it! As if i didn’t already like both groups, My Humps adds some energy to the music here. it’s really weird of course, but the vocals and music agree with each other in time and rhythm and I actually thought the mashing was pretty good. I loved it!

Now, what I’d really like to see is some Gold Digger/Sigur Ros. Try that one on for size!

  50. Jack: yeah, I had to check to make sure it was a legal verb, but then I thought it was hillarious to think that her jeans & “ices” made men want to confirm her sex

  51. john  |   Posted on Dec 31st, 2005

this is so depressing and angering. you are all so fucking stupid. keep shitting on good music. \m/
