Thanks Best Week Ever for sending this my way:

Busta Rhymes cut off the dreadlocks he started growing fifteen years ago. Apparently it’s a big fucking deal because he captured the event on a boring-ass video, which ends with a phone call to his momma.

“I’m about to cut this shit off man. Y’all gonna see the sexiest head you ever seen in yo motherfuckin’ life.” Watch. (ASX)

Remember a few months back when little-known Belgian singer Salvatore Acquaviva claimed Madonna’s “Frozen” plagiarized parts of his “Ma Vie Fout L’camp”? (He won his lawsuit, incidentally.) It reminded me of my favorite accidental musical plagiarism of all time: Busta Rhymes’ “Dangerous.”

Busta unwittingly stole the infectious “Dangerous” chorus from a Long Island public service announcement I remember watching as a kid. It’s hilarious. Listen to the MP3, and then check out the video.

And don’t take pills you find lying around the house, kids!

  1. AWESOME *cough, cough* How much are they going up for on eBay, eh?

  2. Yeah — they should probably go up for auction with William Shatner’s kidney stones, right?

  3. That haircut took forever. Super Cuts would have that done in 3 minutes, tops.

Why do you think that Busta took it “unwittingly”?

  5. I grew up in South Jersey, but I distinctly remember this PSA from my childhood, too. Maybe it was a national campaign slightly changed for different markets?

Wow, I definitely remember that PSA from back in the day. It used to be on Ch. 11 during the cartoon blocks…

well, that’s 6 minutes and 3 seconds of my life i’ll never get back.

was there supposed to be a point to him documenting his hair cut?

  8. Didn’t he steal the haircut from Kravitz?

  9. > Why do you think that Busta
    > took it “unwittingly”?

That’s what he told MTV News at the time. I can’t believed I remembered reading that from almost eight years ago, but I dug up the article for ya:

“Busta’s camp says that the PSA jingle apparently just popped into the rapper’s head, and that he wasn’t sure where he remembered it from, and that they could not track down its origination.”

  10. Yawn. I could have told you a week ago that he cut off his dreads.

oh, you’ve done it again stereogum!

I always recognized that homage; Bussah Buss probably was told to say “it popped into his head” by his label after the album had already come out and they realized they hadn’t struck a deal with the PSA copyright holder.

    hahahaha they storyboarded his haircut??!?

  15. yep. that was about the most boring thing i’ve ever seen. thanks busta. ‘ppreciate it.
