Pitchfork had a cute piece yesterday (wait, did I just call Pitchfork cute?) about the Lips revealing anger management issues in their album titles … Yoshimi BATTLES The Pink Robots, FIGHT Test, and now AT WAR With The Mystics. Pitchfork is about as cute as an impacted tooth that needs to come out, and certainly as grating! I’m flummoxed by their snide comments around Jenny Lewis’ solo album, and incensed by their dislike of Cat Power’s “Where is my love”, which I think is as good or better than anything else on “The Greatest.” I digress…

Man…that’s not good at all, is it? First “Mr. Ambulance Driver” and now this…Can bands jump the shark?
It took a few listens, but I like it now. Same thing w/Yoshimi. I think it’s better than Mr Ambulance Driver.
The Flaming Lips are an amazing entity. Name another band that started out as poorly as they did and became that amazing. They kept on getting better and better with every album.
However, Yoshimi just wasn’t as good The Soft Bulletin. Which isn’t to say it’s not great. I actually hold it in the same regards as I do Transmissions and Clouds, but the Soft Bulletin was a masterpiece.
And the new songs…. I mean, peaking at the 15 year mark of your career ain’t bad. Most bands don’t even last nearly that long. But I’d hate to hear the Lips lose their magic.
Whatever. I’m buying the album no matter what. I have too much faith in them and I’ve forgiven great bands for bad albums before.
Am I the only one who likes it? I think it’s pretty fucking good… considering people are fawning over that new Vines song… this is at least a million times better!
I find it amazing how people are so quick to judge an album after hearing so little. the Flaming Lips have always been about the whole album, some parts of even the Flaming Bulletin would sound poor on a mix CD but sound just perfect in the context of the album. I actually really, really like this song. I liked Mr Ambulance Driver too, but it wasn’t quite up to scratch and a bit too Yoshimi-esque. I wouldn’t call myself the greatest lips fan in the world- but I like them a lot, and I like this a lot too.

I will spend money on anything The Flaming Lips release but just the music not the merchandise. I’ll buy this disc even if it’s just them reciting a grocery list.
to answer your question, macky: derivative of their own work. and that’s precisely why it’s sad. for a band who has been profoundly innovative with each successive album, this comes across as profoundly BAD. and, furthermore, you come off as an uneducated and myopic jerk.

are people listening to the same track I was? that was amazing! I was quite scared after hearing mr ambulance driver but W.A.N.D is amazing. These guys are from the outer limits in terms of the way they create music. It doesn’t sound as epic as some of the stuff off yoshimi & lacks polish that the soft bullitin had but it still absolutely rock! bring on at war with the mystics!
