They announced the Oscar nominees this morning, but this being a music blog, I’m only gonna list the contenders for Best Original Song.

  • “In the Deep” from Crash
Music by Kathleen “Bird” York and Michael Becker; Lyric by Kathleen “Bird” York

  • “It’s Hard Out Here for a Pimp” from Hustle & Flow
Music and Lyric by Jordan Houston, Cedric Coleman and Paul Beauregard

  • “Travelin’ Thru” from Transamerica
Music and Lyric by Dolly Parton

  • I guess it wasn’t a stellar year for cinema sounds. Hopefully PT Anderson’s got something up his sleeve, and we’ll see an Aimee Mann/Phil Collins rematch in ’07.

Also there’s a part in March of the Penguins that sounds like Tortoise’s “Ten-Day Interval,” but that’s neither here nor there.

For those who care, see the whole list of nominees here. Brokeback Mountain = must-see or overrated?

what no way-both towers thats hilarious.

      Overrated.

    2. And only three nominees? Nothing for Rent or The Producers, both of which had new songs just for the film. No cheesy Celine-esque ballad either. It’s almost a refutation of everything an Oscar-nominated song used to be. There’s a story here I think.

I can’t wait to see them do “Pimp” at the ceremony. Keep hustlin!

    3. Worth seeing, but still a bit overrated.

      Brokeback Mountain in a nutshell:

GUY: Oh, there’s my shirt. (weeps)

It’s really pretty silly. Did you know it’s hard to be gay in America? Okay, then.

    6. I liked Brokeback Mountain better than Match Point–Match Point’s more overrated than Brokeback Mountain. So glad it’s not nominated for anything major.

And I heard the songs from Hustle and Flow sucked. The song that closes Brokeback Mountain is better than most of the nominees.

When I saw Hustle & Flow, that song just gradually got more annoying as the movie went on. Kind of funny contrasting it with Randy Newman (when does he not have a nomination for Best Original Song?) and Dolly.

if all you get out of Brokeback Mountain is that it’s hard to be gay in America then you should be held back a grade, little one. it’s not over-rated as much as over-hyped. think of it as the first Strokes album: not the salvation of rock and roll, but still a great record.

as for Penny, you best come correct before i ‘Whoop that trick’.

All I have to say is that on my list of things to do before I die – “get hit on by an Oscar nominee” can now be crossed off.

      Whoooppee!!!

Who…Matt Dillon? Because we’ve all been there.

Matt Dillon? My money was on Judi Dench. The girl’s a ho.

Brokeback = definitely a must see.
