Still digging Cat Power’s Greatest album and Cingular’s greatest commercial.

Now we all get to see CP’s much buzzed about “Living Proof” video. Chan Marshall hangin’ on the cross … running a race … in a latex body suit.

Watch the video in MTV Overdrive. Yes, Harmony Korine directed. How’d you guess?

What do you guys think? What’s the message? Could it be more controversial? What if James Frey was in it? Will Urban Outfitters start selling pink 2Pac hoodies?

And because no blog post is complete without an embedded YouTube clip, here’s Cat Power rapping “The Real Slim Shady.”

UPDATE: “Living Proof” Quicktime (MOV).

it would be awesome if Matador would release Hangin on the telephone as a bside. her version is great.

The cloaked women are also wearing latex body suits..

  4. I don’t get it… someone help me.

  5. ettett  |   Posted on Jan 31st, 2006

Jesus is just alright with me…

  6. Thanks for the Mac link John!

MTV’s lack of mac support is so quaint… everytime I visit the site, I feel like it’s 1995.

  7. I’m not on a mac, but every time I try to view a video on MTV.com, it ends up upside-down and green-tinted. Just me?

cat power is also confirmed for bonnaroo, alongside radiohead, elvis costelllo, beck, dungen, devendra and almost 50 others

brandon, i’ve had the upside-down greenness too. good to know that my computer is not just screwed up for once.

  11. that slim shady rapping is probably the most assured live performance chan has ever given. did anyone see her on subterranian? it made me uncomfortable.

britney spears on a crucifix. maybe its about the celebraties screaming persecution or taking a dig at how nothing is sacred or maybe that christ is a track star who also made pop albums in the late 90′s and early 2000′s.

I read Harmony Korine chose a bunch of obvious social, religious and political images in order to say something, but he didn’t know what the something was and that it was “open to interpretation.” The guy made Gummo, what do you expect?

  14. Okay, thanks to this post, I heard “Living Proof” for the first time a few hours ago. And, strangely, the first reaction I had turned into this:

    http://www.faultside.com/sweetpower.mp3

Matthew Sweet vs Cat Power – “The Living Truth”

(You have no idea how close this came to being called “The Ugly Proof”.)

Now, my ears are completely shot, so the mix/master may be a little wacky. But I think you get the idea. I may try and clean it up a little tomorrow (or just wipe it altogether, depending on my mood).

  15. one word. wife. mmm.

pink 2Pac hoodie? is she god or something? wow thats awesome.

  16. That was crap-tacular. But we should have more shots of Chan in red latex.

Has anyone ever noticed that woman might not be entirely sane?

I know we went over all of this last time that commercial was posted, but does anyone have a link for that “Hanging On The Telephone” cover yet?

    O-VER-RATED
    O-VER-RATED
but i love how many times they have to hand her new mics, haha.

  21. personally, i’d rather have those crappy bret vapnek videos than this garbage. the video isn’t insightful, it isn’t funny, it isn’t even fucking edgy, at this point in our everything-offensive-is-funny-again culture, it’s just racist. the song is great, the album is great, but god, what i wouldn’t give for the chance to punch harmony korine in the junk.

  22. Pardon me for not having jumped on the bandwagon…but I do not get the whole greatness about Cat Power. bleh =^P

  23. “that slim shady rapping is probably the most assured live performance chan has ever given.” I saw her at a John Spencer concert a few years ago at Irving Plaza. She couldn’t even make it through one song. It was EXTREMELY uncomfortable to watch, it almost killed my mood.

  24. Pretty sure that was filmed at the Vanderbilt University track.

  25. I love you chan. No matter hot disappointing that living proof video is.

  26. Yeah I think that is Vandy’s track Stu! harmony is from nashville. A few weeks ago they filmed a white stripes video on belmont blvd (or at least that’s the rumor, complete with jim jarmusch directing?).

  27. Gypsy  |   Posted on Feb 2nd, 2006

hmmmmmm….chan is an interesting girl. I don’t understand the hotness factor though. She is just not hot to me. A plain quirky looking girl in SAGGY latex.

  28. Gummo this fuckface  |   Posted on Feb 3rd, 2006

Gawwwd, that Harmony dude is one brain-dead, retarded moral idiot.

  29. citobot  |   Posted on Feb 4th, 2006

this video by harmony and chan…is great…classic harmony…strange abit disturbing but colorful.the fashion is on point..always intense-somewhere between a homeless person and the japanese avant garde…you know what i like is that he takes what is on tv right now…mashs it up ….and makes it the wierdness it is…what appears to be a guy rapping with chan showing of his quasi pimp my ride….yo mtv raps revival video. then takes chan the martyr with all the other women from a desert..in a race ..that are on every news channel or world magazine…..which i think are being exploited by western media about as much as they are in their country….and the end …then he hits you with the 3 person stand from the olympics that took away medals from people that deserved it..just for expressing their beliefs…coincidence there i think not…harmony korine….is a neopop hypersurrealist…and catpower well shes an icon….shes all the 90s indie females wrapped up into one great one for the new century.

Something evocative about this whole thing.
I like it a whole lot

  31. patricio  |   Posted on Aug 28th, 2006

haha i dont see the problem…it has its own style…who are you to define art?….thats why there are different directors…im sure he could have made it look like the titanic or king kong if you wanted to.
