Last night’s Steve Martin intro was priceless, but I was really surprised how much I like this new Prince song, “Fury.” Watch below, and if you’ve got MP3 send our way.

Later in the show Fred Armisen did his own “Prince Show.” See, the Purple One does have a sense of humor!

UPDATE: Prince – “Fury (Live On SNL 2/4/06)” (MP3 Link Expired)

i thought it was the most god-awful saturday night live i’ve ever seen. absolutely miserable… steve martin was a one-note joke that got worse with every spin.

  2. telly  |   Posted on Feb 5th, 2006

That song struck me as WAY too Hendrix-meets-Santana to be anywhere near “good.” The second song he did was pretty awesome though.

  3. Frosty  |   Posted on Feb 5th, 2006

I thought Steve Martin could bring some magic!!!!
I thought Steve Martin could bring some humor!!!!

but no, damnit!!! SNL still sucks! I cannot believe that they let these skits pass??? What the hell??? Where did the punch lines go?

Apparently the ‘joke’ is that I’m enough of an idiot to keep falling for whatever ‘ploy’ they have to try and pull me in (Death Cab, Prince, etc); and I still attempt to watch it!!

Will someone kill Lorne Michaels already and give this show to Conan O’Brien?????

  4. caima  |   Posted on Feb 5th, 2006

i thought the show had some moments worth a few giggles, at least. like the first digital short with the talking really close. though all in all, i was a little dissapointed with steve martin.

and i dont think i can appreciate prince very much outside of purple rain.

  5. i don’t understand why people ever expect SNL to be good. news flash: it has sucked since the 70s.

  6. song suck’d. nuff said.

  7. Prince is King.

  8. assassiNate  |   Posted on Feb 5th, 2006

Was anyone else disappointed when the real Prince didn’t make an appearance on the Prince Show? Couldn’t they have had him in the mirror looking back at Fred A. when put on his Wonder Mask or whatever? This bothered me.
    But yes, good show.

This song kicks some serious ass.

  9. Nicki  |   Posted on Feb 5th, 2006

If Prince really had a sense of humor, he would have actually made an appearance in the Prince Show

And as for people thinking that was one of the worst episodes ever, have you watched recently? I think last night’s was pretty damn good.

  10. Quit analyzing and get on the MP3 finding. I’m soooo stoked about this song.

  11. Good news… Lorne Michaels just hired the people who did the “Brokeback to the Future” video that’s been linked all over the net. It’s all part of the new SNL casting strategy: find funny internet memes and immediately hire those who invented them.

I heard Michaels is even in negotiations with the people who brought us “All Your Base Are Belong To Us”.

  12. LL Cool F  |   Posted on Feb 5th, 2006

Prince is one of the great guitar players this side of a dirt nap.
Excellent song. Please find the mp3.

  13. All that time shut inside Paysley Park practicing his guitar has payed off!

  14. that song owns everything death cab has ever done.

  15. wow, that song is fucking sweet. post the MP3 if/when you get it!

  16. Alex  |   Posted on Feb 5th, 2006

That song was *excellent*. Had a lot of punch.

  17. ben, I concur.

and seriously, I was fully expecting Prince to be in the Prince Show, and I think the audience was too. Did you hear that explosion of applause they gave when what’s-his-name walked out dressed as Prince? And then it died down when they realized it was just an actor. That sucked ass, man.

and the digital short was interesting.

  18. Couldn’t find the mp3 anywhere… couldn’t even find it on any Prince album on Amazon. Hmmm.

  19. damn prince can SHRED

  20. that was pretty freakin awesome. always loved prince and this is a sweet throwback sound too. could have been a hit single in several decades

  21. Evan  |   Posted on Feb 5th, 2006

Prince is a badass mothafucka and you all know it. HE MADE THE GUITAR PLAY ITSELF!! Then he walks offstage like a pimp and shows all those whiney emo boys and lame nu-metal posers how to tear it up. Follow that Fred Armisen! And he doesn’t even play any of his old songs even though he hasn’t been on the show in 25 years. He owns my ass and yours too.

  22. Why don?t you purify yourself in the waters of Lake Minnetonka?

  23. Adolf  |   Posted on Feb 5th, 2006

It would have been cute if he made a cameo against his impersonation. I was waiting for that and was disappointed.

But boy can he cook on the guitar…

  24. prince pwns j00

  25. everyone hates me for liking and watching SNL (still), but whatever. I love Maya Rudolph. I, too, was expecting Prince to show up on “The Prince Show,” as well as the real Beyonce, since she’s in that shitty-ass Pink Panther remake with Steve Martin. I bet her agent or whoever told her to distance herself from any publicity involving that movie.

  26. jason  |   Posted on Feb 5th, 2006

Anyone notice how much Matt Bellamy stole from Prince?!

His whole repetoire and guitar style are like prince reborn

  27. withahip  |   Posted on Feb 5th, 2006

The new album isn’t out until March as far as I know. I don’t think you’ll find an mp3 for a while yet. I almost didn’t watch because I was afraid he was going to do that slow, latino-esque single. Phew!

The SNL skits are still too bloody long for my taste. Will they never learn? Why’s the show still a whole hour and a half? They couldn’t fill the time even back in the seventies when they had Gilda Radner.

  28. Noooo! Tease me with the broken MP3 link, why don’t you.

  29. prince burned the place down.

  30. classicrocksucks  |   Posted on Feb 6th, 2006

DUDE! Stop posting about OLD MUSIC on this site.
OLD MUSIC sucks. OLD PEOPLE SUCK.

Indie rock! This is an indie rock site!

No one wants MAINSTREAMS OLD MUSIC on a site like this.

  31. Tony  |   Posted on Feb 6th, 2006

    ha. what a moron.

  32. Prince will make you want to fuck him until your eyes explode inside your head if you dont like this song.

  33. fred  |   Posted on Feb 6th, 2006

Prince is the Chuck Norris of Rock and Roll. Delivering roundhouse kicks to your ears with his sweet ass guitar.

  34. Fabián Precetti  |   Posted on Feb 6th, 2006

PRINCE is a KING, is amazing!!……

  35. D Sven  |   Posted on Feb 6th, 2006

I was hoping that Prince would cameo in the Prince skit…but then I realized, hey, this is Prince. He takes himself wayyy too seriously.

I don’t care though, b/c that man can sure play some mean guitar.

  36. fido  |   Posted on Feb 6th, 2006

classicrocksucks, just because it’s indie doesn’t mean it’s good. Conversely, just because it’s old and/or mainstream doesn’t mean it’s bad. By your logic, Do Rabbits Wonder? by Whirlwind Heat is better than Purple Rain. So fuck off.

Is this an indie music blog? Really? The last thing I really remember that was truly indie was the Midlake MP3. Just accept this as a music blog and it’s a lot more interesting.

  37. EtcEtcEtc  |   Posted on Feb 6th, 2006

I’m most likely the only one who noticed this, but is it just me or does this song have a huge video game music feel to it.

Especially in what I guess is the chorus, all I could think about was Flash Man’s music from Mega Man 2.

Yeah I’m a huge geek. Anyways, the song was quite good, no Purple Rain, but still the highlight of an awful SNL.

  38. Prince rocks hard. Always has, always will.

  39. Prince rocked it hard. Potbellies in Chicago does have the best sandwiches, most def.

  40. fido  |   Posted on Feb 6th, 2006

Oh my God. That is Flash Man. Thanks for pointing that out.

Prince’s guitar playing is delightfully masturbatory, even if he isn’t sporting the Yellow Cloud.

  41. Prince is an amazing guitarist. i haven’t heard him play like that since purple rain era. he proved he is still the greatest

  42. Billy K  |   Posted on Feb 6th, 2006

Prince rules, and I was ecstatic to see him finally prove it to those who had forgotten. Great new song, too. Yes, he’s a Hendrix fan. Always has been.

  43. bobo  |   Posted on Feb 6th, 2006

That song sounds like a rehash of “1999″.

  44. um, classicrocksucks, where does it say this is an indie rock site? This is a BLOG run by some people who wanted to share their musical tastes and findings with others, and it just so happens to be rather popular. And besides, just because it’s indie, does it mean it’s necessarily better than all classic rock? By saying you definitely like 100% hate everything over 3 years old, that’s making a pretty ambiguous statement. Have you heard every single indie/classic rock song ever put out? No. Therefore you can’t know that everything in one genre sucks.

But I posted before os i should stop now.

  45. Eddie  |   Posted on Feb 6th, 2006

“DUDE! Stop posting about OLD MUSIC on this site.
OLD MUSIC sucks. OLD PEOPLE SUCK.
Indie rock! This is an indie rock site!
No one wants MAINSTREAMS OLD MUSIC on a site like this.”

Haha. This, my friends, is why I loathe indie fucks. As if saying anything not indie sucks wasn’t blasphemous enough, this guy is telling the “dude” how to run a blog (and calling it a site, mind you!) Good music is good music, like it or not. Period. Don’t think so? Go create your own blog and tell your fans all about it.

In regards to the song, I agree with Scott, that song was really likeable. I’ve never really been a Prince fan but that song has greatness written all over it. There’s no denying, Prince is a great showman. There, i’m done with my rant. I bid you farewell.

  46. uh, yeah, anyone who doesn’t recognize that Prince is one of the most amazing guitar players and all-around musicians ever to walk the earth is too damn stupid to breathe.

the song is great, and every “indie” band or whoever should kiss his ring.
Now, if someone can provide an mp3 of his performance of “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” at the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame induction, I will <3 U 4 EVA!

  47. Fury did own

the second song he played isn’t on his new album, it’s on Tamar’s upcoming record coming out in May.

  48. leah  |   Posted on Feb 7th, 2006

wasnt so bad- so effin hendrix! i seriously thought that when he laid his guitar down he was going to set it on fire and get on his knees

  49. I love it when the real musicians come out and play once in ahwile. For once a artist on SNL, did not neeed a backing track to fulfill the night is a testamony to his grandour. You detractors need to smoke yourselves out and get a life. J-Lo will pass soon, go with her, silently.
    Good Bye.
    Scott

  50. Prince owns his own label, that’s pretty indie.

  51. anna  |   Posted on Feb 11th, 2006

The reason he didn’t do “The Prince Show” skit was because he wanted to focus on the music…..and word on the street is,
    it paid off.
    :)
Prince is very cautious and intelligent…
The guy knows what he wants–
–then he goes and gets it.
    LIKE A VEGAN VELOCERAPTOR HA!

  52. Prince was on FIRE!!! Never expected that, damn that guy is awesome, where can I find more of his music? Is he promoting a new album? What a refreshing sight to see a real musician perform.

  53. Best performance on SNL in years, although it may not be the best song. Finally, an appearance by someone that really knows how to play an instrument. Best segue to a commercial a break. It seems like the guitar is racing through the tunnel. Prince didn’t need to light the guitar at the end. The entire stage was in flames the whole time. Some of you indies might want to take some notes on how to put on a show and maybe spend a little more time praciticing.

  54. P.S.

To those of you that think soloing is equal to masturbation: you must stink at foreplay. I pity your partners. I wonder whether you are ignorant or jealous. When it comes to performing arts, those that can, do, and those that can’t, criticize the ones that can.

3 years later and I still remember this performance by Prince. I’m still watching and listening to it.

    Guy was awesome.
