Fluxblog has an MP3 of the first single from Streets’ The Hardest Way To Make An Easy Living. Matt writes:

“…Smug and self-absorbed, but his characteristic wit and attention to narrative detail saves the track from seeming like a cut-rate English Eminem. And of course, the ridiculously catchy chorus does not hurt at all.”

Skinners’ songs never make a big first impression on me, but inevitably I can’t get them outta my head. I assume this will be no different.

Album drops 4/10. Here’s the tracklist:
1. Pranging Out
2. War Of The Sexes
3. The Hardest Way To Make An Easy Living
4. All Goes Out the Window
5. Memento Mori
6. Can’t Con An Honest John
7. When You Wasn’t Famous
8. Never Went To Church
9. Hotel Expressionism
10. Two Nations
11. Fake Streets Hats

I never like dumping on people’s taste, but I just don’t understand the appreciation of this guy’s stuff. He reminds me of the Offspring in that his singles are essentially novelty tracks.

  4. i saw him in my place of work today! (an art gallery) But he looked like a chav!

  5. i’m so sick of the streets. the first album was good, but the second…what!!! it was terrible. unlistenable, i thought. not looking forward to this new stuff…

  7. justin  |   Posted on Feb 16th, 2006

i feel opposite. original pirate material was pretty meh. but a grand don’t come for free was fantastic. i dunno how to feel about this track, i want to hear the album front to back.

  8. flora  |   Posted on Feb 16th, 2006

    kind of a let down

  11. I can’t believe critics think his bloated, piece of dung second album was genius. The first album was, the second was trite tripe.

/me is waiting for the new Primal Scream to leak…

  13. I thought you said you weren’t going to say “drops” anymore?

  14. chunky  |   Posted on Feb 17th, 2006

that was aweful. sounds like a crappy novelty-skit pile of poo. sounds like he’s desperate and has too many people around him telling him how great he is. just cos it’s from the uk doesn’t automatically mean it’s good.

  15. > I thought you said you weren’t going
    > to say “drops” anymore?

I knew you would call me on that. ;)

  16. i think original pirate material was unbeatable,a grand dont come for free was okay and his new stuff still good. when you wasnt famous will grow on you like any streets tracks before the man is a musical god. even if he is up his own arse.

  17. does anyone know who the song is about? he never makes stuff up and is really honest. like ‘fit but you know it’ was about rachel stevens, who is this about?

  18. calliwell  |   Posted on Feb 19th, 2006

Oh Mike Skinner. This is a no.

  19. Shut up man… he is a songwriter writing what is true to him, if you dont like it he isnt forcing you to listen, thats the radio’s fault

  20. nobodykisses  |   Posted on Feb 20th, 2006

this sounds like a mixture of ragga, favela beats and easy listening sunshine reggae topped by this unique mike-skinner-rap-style
    gimme some mo´

I’m good buddys with Mike Skinner’s Nephew and the truth is.. he isn’t actually a chav.. he just has to be seen wearing ” chav clothes” because Reebok have sponsored him..
I also recently went to the gig at the London Astoria with said friend and i met him .. really nice guy…soo ya know don’t be fooled by the media.. oh yeh and trust me this new album is going to be good.. i’ve heard a few tracks.. and yes yes Original Pirate Material is the better out of the two.
Oh yeh… apparently he loves the show Miami Vice!

    Catch ya !

Love his tracks went to see him in manchester my two girls love the songs age 4 & 5 and even went to manchester with me.Bring on the next album my girls are waiting.

  26. What are you ppl talking about this guy is clearly a genius! his lyricsare so true to real life its unbelievable. You show me an artist who talks more sense! this guy has done what all the successful american rap artists have done come from the streets and worked his way up. at least he doesnt pretend that he got shot like 80 times everything he says comes from the heart. hes been there and done that so dont move so quickly to criticise him! And to Chunky who said hes good cos he comes from da u.k? i mean fair enuff ur music mainly consists of people who slit their wrists or ppl who are from the “ghetto” so lay off our artists m8!
