Starts off slow, but totally worth it.

In the director’s defense, he really loves that song.

“It’s my Song! It’s my Song!”

    “Ow. Ow. Be cool. Ow.”

    Very funny.

But this guy is my worst nightmare at shows.

    “Coming through. Gotta get through.”

    Yuck.

  5. Was that real? That had to have been staged… that wasn’t real… was it Scott? Was it? Maybe it was… or maybe he did know the band. He did call that Doughboy on stage Ben didn’t he?

    ahahahahah

    TAAALKING LIKE TURNSTIIIIIIIIIIIIIILES!!!!!!!!!

  7. “watch my back, I think he’s gonna kill me!”
lol. I hate death cab, but this is gold.

Did he steal some of their water? cuz that’s what it looks like.

Haha, oh, I have a new hero.

  9. Caanan  |   Posted on Apr 5th, 2006

That is hilarious. I have to agree though, that guy would drive me fuckin’ nuts…

Those kids seem to be reacting really real to me. This is crazy. Everything messed up about today’s concerts in one single song. You’ve got the guy obsessed with the obscure b side, the kids with the cell phones in the air, way too many cameras, the same obscure b side guy sneaking in a video camera… Crazy.

My favorite line has to be: “Ben. Ben… Wassup?”

  11. Haha yeah this is insane. It’s very hilarious but yeah, I would definately be so pissed off if I was next to him. Everyone just cleared their way for him. So funny.

  12. ugh the song before the turnstiles one was annoying the audience was singing so loud. kinda dorked me out. i dont like death cab

  13. natalie  |   Posted on Apr 5th, 2006

it’s funny on the video, but people like that at concerts piss me off so bad. they’re usually so rude about it. at least this guy was nice.

i wish he’d shown a bit more of what was in their dressing room though.

  14. “Play it agaaaaain!!”

Funny, but I am pretty sure this was set up. He seemed to know the backstage area pretty well.

  15. pete  |   Posted on Apr 5th, 2006

ah, ok. so the deal is that this is fake. it’s part of their dvd “directions” which features a video for each song on plans (including b-sides apparently). this one was done by lance bangs. i don’t think the audience was in on it though.

  16. damn… that makes it less funny.

  17. Maggie  |   Posted on Apr 5th, 2006

Pete, I have watched all the ‘Directions’ videos and this is not one of them.

  18. wrong  |   Posted on Apr 5th, 2006

its not fake. it was for the dvd but the band didnt know either.

  19. it was funny until he went backstage. then it was dumb.

  20. I have to agree on this being staged for directions because when you see the interveiw/introduction to the directions series, they show little clips from each directions video, and some of this clip was in there.

    still i loved it

PS Im a die hard fan of death cab for cutie, (I saw them on march 25th and had conversations with each band memeber after wards) but when people sing along with “follow you into the dark” its just so…..lame. its a love song, you guys. let him sing his heart out.

the overdub of the gruff bouncer going “get over here you” or whatever, is the giveaway…still funny/clever though…

  22. will  |   Posted on Apr 11th, 2006

    here.

before running away under the merch table, he sees the guard, how did he get away so fast… FAKE but funny…

and i love on the directors comments, (if you bought the dvd) how he complains that he didnt get the song he wanted (brothers on a hotel bed), he says something like “oh some computer programmer will get it and ruin it blah blah blah” haha and brothers is the WORST video on there… i dont know why they let that guy direct it.

Haha!… I was there, at that show, November 2005 at Crystal Ballroom in Portland Oregon! Yes, this was staged! This was actually the 2nd consecutive time they played this song that night. The first time, he got up on stage and the bouncers really did take him off the stage…so Ben had him come out, and he blurbed that it was for a film…so they played it again, and let him run loose. 100% Staged! But it was fun, none-the-less to see Chris Walla stoned out of his mind!

Err…correction to above, the video footage is from the first playing of Talking Like Turnstiles that night. They did play it again right after this, and let the guy do his thing. Ben did say in between takes, that he was a personal friend taking video footage for a DVD.
