The Internet is a buzz, as always, with predictions on which bands are playing which festival. Austin City Limits’ Music Festival, as Austinist reports, has a sneaky ploy to drive hype for their event.

From April 13th through this Friday, they’re posting a “daily artist clue” on the Scavenger Hunt page, like yesterday’s: “This group’s latest release cites drum licks copped from Detroit Rock City.” You’re then invited to spend ages scouring the net for the answer.

Or not: aclfest2006rumors.blogspot.com is doing all the work for us. Check out that blog for the latest ACL gossip. According to them, confirmed so far are The Shins, The Flaming Lips, Iron & Wine, The New Pornographers, Son Volt, and a bunch of bands we don’t care about.

Meanwhile, Stereogum could use some advice about which fests to attend. There are are in the running:

  • Sasquatch 5/26 – 5/28 @ The Gorge, George, WA
  • Intonation 6/24 – 6/25 @ Union Park, Chicago, IL
  • Pitchfork 7/29 – 7/30 @ Union Park, Chicago, IL
  • Lollapalooza 8/4 – 8/6 @ Grant Park, Chicago, IL

  • Bonnaroo (6/16 – 6-18 in Manchester, TN) is already a go. It’ll be my third year, and after two years of ubiquitous Warren Haynes, Roo’s rewarded me with Radiohead and Tom Petty. I’m psyched.

What other summer fests am I forgetting? What are YOU trekking to?

      pitchfork=cheap=me.

    2. kind of lame to give away the answers to the daily quiz, isn’t it?

    3. Lollapalooza 8/4 – 8/26 @ Grant Park, Chicago, IL

wow, 22 days of lolla. perry must be planning a verrry long dj set

    4. pitchfork is the way to go. Not only is it in Chicago, but it’s cheap, has a good, diverse lineup and is smack-dab in the middle of the summer…

    5. Charlie  |   Posted on Apr 18th, 2006

All the free festivals in NYC this summer (Siren for example).

    6. meh.

Being lame is reason #1 I give away the answers.
But I think it would be lamer (if that?s even a word) to wait a day to put the answer up.
Within 30 minutes of ACL posting the clue, the answer is all over the web.

    7. oh yeah, and thanks for the mention, Scott.

    8. Guess everybody’s skipping Coachella, huh?

    9. Why would that ass post the answers? I wanna win damnit!!! The clues are easy anyways, not much more than 5 minutes on Google for each.

    10. Why would that ass post the answers? I wanna win damnit!!! The clues are easy anyways, not much more than 5 minutes on Google and a brain for each.

    11. coachella baby, 10 days away!!!

      all about the Massive Attack!

    12. A) I’m skipping Coachella. Stereogum doesn’t like the desert.
      B) Obviously all the FREE NY stuff. River to River announced some amazing free shows today.
      C) Re: “wow, 22 days of lolla. perry must be planning a verrry long dj set” — haaa, fixed.

    13. Well, I’m in Chicago, so I’m a little biased. I’m headed to Pitchfork, Intonation, AND Lollapalooza, but as the fests unviel their lineups, I’ve been constantly underwhelmed by the acts announced for Pitchfork. Frankly, Os Mutantes is the first act that pushes Pitchfork into “must see” territory for me, but YMMV. I’m certainly not as indie as some of the folks in these parts.

For my money, Intonation is the way to go. Cheap tix, and a wholly un-fuckwithable lineup. Plus the late June timeframe leads me to hope that Intonation’s weather will be a bit milder then the blazing sun of last year’s Intonation and Lolla dates. Plus, Boredoms.

      Are you kidding me?

Do you even have to ask?

Intonation for High on Fire. I can’t imagine what Matt Pike’s guitar playing will sound like hanging in the humid Chicago air.

    15. Kuyahoga Fest in Cleveland: Flaming Lips, Sonic Youth, Death Cab, Go Team!, Wolfmother and more for $19.

    16. (coachella, but that’s not really a summer festival.)

definite maybes, in decreasing probability sort order:
bumbershoot (because it’s in my backyard)
sasquatch — at least somewhat close
pitchfork: cheap and a couch would be easy to find
      bonaroo / radiohead

Sasquatch is amazing. The location is so beautiful (although in the middle of NOWHERE) and the lineup this year is unbelievable. I recommend. If you come let me know … I’ll be camping on the Columbia River with ski boat and some cold Rainiers.

    18. rimbaud  |   Posted on Apr 18th, 2006

After looking at the line-ups, I think you’re getting the most bang for your buck at Lollapalooza…

    19. Pitchfork, definitely. If nothing else, I’ll probably see you at Bonnaroo!

    20. Nick  |   Posted on Apr 18th, 2006

Sasquatch! And usually back for Bumbershoot, but the bit of lineup they released so far doesn’t look too promising…

    21. I’ll be doing all 3 chicago festivals. I’m pumped to see Spoon at Pitchfork. And pretty much every other band.

    22. JackPine and I (partoftheheard.blogspot.com) will be at Bonnaroo because the lineup is very good and at Pitchfork because it’s not too far of a drive and it’s cheap. And maybe the Kuyahoga Rock Festival (Cleveland, OH) which has Sonic Youth, The Flaming Lips, Hold Steady, Go! Team, Wolfmother, and Death Cab.

    23. San Diego Street Scene
      August 4 and 5
      http://www.street-scene.com
      Line up announced in May

    24. Brian  |   Posted on Apr 18th, 2006

The Pitchfork seems to be the pick of the litter on account of line-up, cost and location. The shorter sets coupled with a ton of people and the price leaves Lolla a distant last…It may be a big world, but there are only so many bands. How many more years can these gigs go before it’s the same bands every year.

    25. Laura  |   Posted on Apr 18th, 2006

I’ll be at Intonation, maybe Pitchfork, and definitely Lolla.

    26. sasquatch last year was one of the most miserable experiences of my life. . .like being in a microwave. seriously. do not bother. unless you like sitting in the microwave. it hurts.

    27. The Desdemona Festival lineup in Cincinnati gets announced in the next couple weeks, but The Walkmen, The Fiery Furnaces, Radio 4, Richard Swift, Small Sins, and The Heartless Bastards are already confirmed. 30 acts total over 3 nights, tickets cheaper than even Pitchfork. And Cincy hotels cost nothing… you all should get down here, its gonna take everyone by surprise.

    28. martin  |   Posted on Apr 19th, 2006

let’s hear it for being broke and living in san francisco…

    29. volume-addict  |   Posted on Apr 19th, 2006

Bumbershoot would’ve looked more impressive to me if they held off on announcing that they’ve stacked the lineup with Hot Topic-rock. Although that is true, I’m still psyched that Metric, Dengue Fever, Deerhoof, and a reunited Tribe Called Quest are scheduled to show up.

    30. i’ve already got tix to all 3 chicago fests this year and they’re gonna be a BLAST!!!

    31. Annie  |   Posted on Apr 19th, 2006

Here’s an idea. How’s about Sufjan and Pitchfork kiss and make-up over that whole baby debacle by having ol’ Suf and his adorable Illinoisemakers headline the Pitchfork Fest? That sounds tops. Anybody reading this got some pull?

    32. Oooh. Roky Erickson was just added to Intonation…

    33. i’m in augusta, georgia….

and were having the JAMES BROWN MUSIC FESTIVAL!

except mr. brown is not going to be there…

since the organizers don’t want to pay him….

and no known bands are playing either….

      (talk about indie, for real)

      it’s really a drag…

      oh well….

Coachella rules. Went to Lolla last year in Chi-Town, was fun– but nothing like Coachella. Again, I say, Coachella rules.

I’d have given anything for Terrastock 6.

      I’ll settle for Pitchfork, somehow.
