Spin-off meme! I’ve been meaning to start this thread too.

Singles, Reality Bites, Dazed & Confused, O, Brother Where Art Thou? = everyone’s got ‘em. And rightly so, they’re great. But what obscure soundtrack do you own that’s not weird, per se, but just surprisingly awesome?

Stereogum’s? The Jackal. Never saw the movie; heard it was shit. But check the tracklist:

01. Fatboy Slim – “Going Out of My Head”
02. Prodigy – “Poison”
03. Massive Attack – “Superpredators (Metal Postcard)”
04. Primal Scream – “Star”
05. Bush – “Swallowed (Goldie/Toasted On Both Sides Mix)”
06. Ani Difranco – “Joyful Girl (Peace And Love Mix)”
07. Moby – “Shining”
08. Dolls Head – “It’s Over, It’s Under”
09. Black Grape – “Get Higher”
10. Goldie And J. Majik – “Sunray 2″
11. BT Featuring Richard Butler – “Shineaway”
12. Agent Provocateur – “Red Tape”
13. The Charlatans UK – “Toothache (Chemical Bros Remix)”
14. Lunatic Calm – “Leave You Far Behind”
15. Apollo Four Forty – “Raw Power”
16. L.T.J. Bukem – “Demon’s Theme”

I will never tire of these:

BT & Richard Butler – “Shineaway” (MP3 Link Expired)
Primal Scream – “Star” (MP3 Link Expired)

And that Black Grape tune, which subverts a Ronald Reagan anti-drug speech, is just hilarious.

I think the soundtrack for Underworld certainly holds the biggest “quality of soundtrack compared to quality of movie” discrepancy. A quick search turned up a rather interesting CMT.com article about the soundtrack. Here’s a relevant quote:

“For the past six months, Danny Lohner ? a producer, multi-instrumentalist and member of Nine Inch Nails ?
has been quietly bringing together artists like David Bowie, ex-Limp Bizkit guitarist Wes Borland, Filter mastermind Richard Patrick, A Perfect Circle members Josh Freese and Maynard James Keenan, and Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante.”

I mean, any one of them is absolutely amazing; take Josh Freese, for instance. Another google quote: “was recently presented with the key to Los Angeles when the Mayor declared July 24th “Josh Freese Day” in Los Angeles”. And then all these people went and created songs with a kind of free-love-play-with-anyone procedure, informally laying down the tracks all in the artists’ home studios. Kindof like the Broken Social Scene of movie soundtracks.

Other than that, I’d have to chime in with the Lost Highway statement.

    The CMT article: http://www.cmt.com/artists/news/1476854/08132003/bowie_david.jhtml

  8. It still gets a few props for its groundbreaking combo of rock and hip hop, but I sense the “Judgement Night” soundtrack is underrated.

    1. Just Another Victim – Helmet/House Of Pain Listen
    2. Fallin’ – Teenage Fanclub/ De La Soul Listen
    3. Me, Myself & My Microphone – Living Colour,/Run D.M.C. Listen

    9. Missing Link – Dinoasur Jr./Del The Funky Homosapien
    10. Come And Die – Therapy?/Fatal
    11. Real Thing – Pearl Jam/Cypress Hill

And who could forget the nearly-forgotten “Suburbia” sountrack?

    1. Unheard Music – Elastica/Stephen Malkmus
    2. Bee-Bee’s Song – Sonic Youth
    3. Bullet Proof Cupid – Girls Against Boys
    4. Feather In Your Cap – Beck
    5. Berry Meditation – U.N.K.L.E.
    6. I’m Not Like Everybody Else – Boss Hog

    11. Tabla In Suburbia – Sonic Youth
    12. Hot Day – The Flaming Lips
    13. Psychic Hearts – Thurston Moore
    14. Town Without Pity – Gene Pitney

  9. I agree with the two people that said Lost Highway. Trent Reznor did a great job putting that soundtrack together.

  10. John  |   Posted on Apr 21st, 2006

Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure no question. Worth it for the opening song on its own!

  11. chris  |   Posted on Apr 21st, 2006

I’m surprised nobody has mentioned Singles

  12. Ah, yeah — Singles. Smashing Pumpkins’s “Drown” is awesome. And the two Pearl Jam songs alone are worth it.

I was always fond of the “Who’s the Man?” soundtrack. But I was also a loser suburban kid who liked House of Pain, so that doesn’t really count.

  13. * About A Boy
    * A Life Less Ordinary
    * Beautiful Girls
    * Big Lebowski
    * Dead Man Walking
    * Kill The Moonlight
    * Jesus’ Son

  19. I second the mention of Velvet Goldmine. I hated the movie, but loved the s/t, especially Shudder to Think’s “Ballad of Maxwell Demon.”

  20. Marrrcus  |   Posted on Apr 21st, 2006

I know this may not be that cool, but the soundtrack to Party Monster has some cool stuff on it. Definietly not the best one I own, but the most random. Never saw the movie, just randomly bought it at a used record store, partly because it was six bucks, also because it had a non-album track by the Scissor Sisters. And damn do I like the Scissor Sisters.

  21. The soundtrack to the movie “SCRAPPLE” is the absolute shit. All ’70s obscure folk jams.

  22. The Legendary Boombox G  |   Posted on Apr 21st, 2006

    Beautiful Girls

the movie was quite cheesy but it was a Greg Dulli currated soundtrack
had Afghan Whigs doing a Barry White tune
    a touching (!?) Ween tune
Sweet Caroline by Neil fucking Diamond
    Beth by Kiss
…then again it had Chris Issac and teh singer from Fine Young Cannibals

  23. Here’s a second vote for “I Shot Andy Warhol,” especially Bettie Serveert doing Dylan…and I’d like to nominate “Times Square.” I never saw the movie, but a friend loaned me the soundtrack when I was just a squirt, and it was the first place I heard the Cure, XTC and Roxy Music. That’s gotta count for something.

  24. Connor  |   Posted on Apr 21st, 2006

The soundtracks to Dead Man on Campus and Go are pretty damn good too.

  25. Only somewhat obscure (it accompanies a Wim Wenders film, after all), but the soundtrack to “The End of Violence” – introspective, wistful, low-key, interestingly diverse (and definitely awesome) – has gotta be up there:

    1. Define Violence – Ry Cooder
    2. Shouldn’t You Know – [spoken by] Traci Lind
    3. Every Time I Try – Spain
    4. Untitled Heavy Beat (Part 1 & 2) – DJ Shadow

    Ditto “CQ”.

    BATMAN FOREVER!

  29. I get a little thrill every time I hear the “Out of Sight” soundtrack, or any soundtrack David Solmes has done– even extending to “Ocean’s 12,” sadly enough.

  30. I Swear to Sufjan that the first thing that came to mind was “Batman Forever” – the first cd I ever bought. Looking at the track list (I haven’t burned it to my pc yet), every song is at least good, and a some are great (like the Flaming Lips one). There’s even a scary Michael Hutchence cover of “The Passenger.”

I think i love everything about Grosse Point Blank, too: the movie, the soundtrack, and the giant poster that’s still rolled up in my closet soewhere. There was a vol. 2 to the soundtrack, but I never bought that one.

I second “A Life Less Ordinary” and add “Great Expectations” (the Gwyneth Paltrow/Ethan Hawke abomination) and the Baz Luhrmann “Romeo + Juliet” soundtracks to the list. Weird how a lot of these soundtracks are from the late 90s…

  39. mysticonnie  |   Posted on Apr 21st, 2006

Batman Forever, Grosse Pointe Blank, Rushmore, Trainspotting, the Crow, the Virgin Suicides, Lost in Translation and Singles are all great soundtracks.

I love the one for The Royal Tenenbaums. Who can resist A Charlie Brown Christmas? Plus, that scene where Gwyneth steps out and Nico starts playing is perfectly cued.

    1. 111 Archer Avenue – Mark Mothersbaugh
    2. These Days – Nico
    3. String Quartet In F Major – Ysaye Quartet
    4. Me And Julio Down By The Schoolyard – Paul Simon

    19. Stephanie Says – The Velvet Underground
    20. Rachel Evans Tenenbaum (1965-2000) – Mark Mothersbaugh

I also love the Portuguese covers of the David Bowie songs from The Life Aquatic. Damn, I listen to a lot of soundtracks… but I must admit, my real guilty pleasure is the Buffy the Vampire Slayer “Once More With Feeling” soundtrack.

  40. city of angels soundtrack is surprisingly good (and i’m not talking about goo goo dolls)… also, royal tenenbaums and high fidelity

the only soundtrack i own besides “Trainspotting” is the one for “Nowhere”, and it’s got some solids, including what I think is a pretty rare Radiohead track. Sadly, 311 kind of taints it:

    3. How Can You Be Sure – Radiohead
    4. In The City – Elastica
    5. Dicknail – Hole

Michelle — since you like a Latin soundtrack, do you have “The Tango Lesson?” I like it, though not every track, but my favorite tango soundtrack song comes from the “Scent of a Woman” soundtrack. SoaW has other good music on it as well, though nothing anyone heard on the radio.

I can’t believe no one has mentioned “A Mighty Wind: The Album.” Worth it for the folk version of “Start Me Up.”

And really, “A Mighty Wind” is just a tongue-in-cheek folk version of the amazingly kickass “Spinal Tap” soundtrack.

If we are talking about soundtracks that are obscure, i was surprised that the soundtrack to “Friday Night Lights” didn’t get talked about more than it did.
Aside from 2 other decent instrumental guitar tracks, it’s essentially just a fantastic Explosions In The Sky album.

And anyone in their late teens/early 20s who did not own the “Space Jam” soundtrack was definitely not sitting at the cool kids’ lunch table.

  63. obscure? sntrk for Walls in the City all by the Denison-Kimbal Trio… a low budget and if I remember correctly (it’s been years) marginally unwatchable flic starring David Yow… but the soundtrack… jittery guitar jazz (as in a caffinated wes montgomery)… from fellow jesus lizarder Duane Denison. The sound of steam rising from a street grate at 4:30 am.

  67. Batman Forever and The Mask

  68. Nashville Soundtrack

From the Robert Altman classic, none of the songs are indie songs or whatever, but it is huge in the alt-country community. On a tribute album to the movie, TWO members of New Pornographers (Carl Newman and Neko Case) sang their praises (terrible wordplay, I know).

Now for Magnolia and Boogie Nights:

Magnolia was the first great Aimee Mann album.

Boogie Nights (Part 1 and 2 of the soundtrack) had great 70s and 80s songs – not songs from the usual suspects (Bee Gees, Donna Summer), but under-the-radar gems from The Move and Melanie. Plus, the beginning excerpt from the movie (“Heat will rock you”) and the bonus Dirk Diggler cover of Stan Bush’s song for the Transformers movie (“You’ve Got the Touch”) make it all worthwhile.

  69. Pretty in Pink when I was a wee one My introduction to new wave/alternative music.

Thumbsucker for the too few Elliott Smith covers.

  71. Polina  |   Posted on Apr 22nd, 2006

Crime & Punishment in Suburbia is an excellent soundtrack–it’s got Frank Black, Sleater-Kinney, and Modest Mouse. The rest of it is full of mostly unknown artists, but their songs are great anyway–especially “sand” by Op8.

  72. I concur with whomever brought up “Judgement Night”. Faith No More, and the Boo-Yaa Tribe collabo? C’mon now. Unfortunately the film was as entertaining as a paper cut.
Far and away the best: The Life Aquatic soundtrack. The scene with the Stooges song rules and the “Ping Island” song will forever be embedded in my feeble brain.

  73. i have always really liked the ‘swingers’ soundtrack… thought it was a great compilation that reflected the spirit of the movie. a lot of genre-jumping, but no song, nor track-order, feels forced.

  74. I still love the Some Kind of Wonderful soundtrack.

    Brilliant Mind – Furniture
Cry Like This – Blue Room
I Go Crazy – Flesh For Lulu
She Loves Me – Stephen Duffy

    The Shyest Time – Apartments
Miss Amanda Jones – March Violets
Can’t Help Falling In Love – Lick The Tins
Turn To The Sky – March Violets

  75. I still love the sheer bizarreness that’s the Small Soldiers soundtrack…

    1. War Performed by Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, featuring flesh-n-bone with Henry Rollins, Tom Morello and Flea. Produced by Damon Elliott.

    2. Another One Bites the Dust Performed by Queen with additional vocals by Wyclef Jean featuring Pras and free. Remixed by Wyclef Jean.

    3. The Stroke Performed by Billy Squier. Remixed by Dallas Austin.

oh my god, that transformers soundtrack has got to win. i had it on cassette.

    “you got the touch!”

was that really in boogie nights? how did i miss that?

    amateur soundtrack is amazing!

also, i have the soundtrack to a weird little flick called “floundering” which has an awesome basshead song called “Not Over You.” also has an idaho song, some stan ridgway, red house painters, and a bunch of other stuff i never heard of.

girl’s town soundtrack is worth it for queen latifah’s “u.n.i.t.y” – who you calling a bitch?

groove soundtrack is cool for the last song, this really melodic, rave track by alter-ring called “Infinitely Gentle Blows”

some more shout outs to magnolia (above) and some kind of wonderful!

i am surprised no one mentioned pretty in pink but i guess it’s not really obscure.

for actual score, the soundtrack to “twin falls idaho” is haunting and amazing. really amazing, actually.

    ok – back to bed.

i’m not sure if it’s underrated, but the lost in translation sountrack is pretty much the greatest soundtrack ever (and a good compliment to a killer movie).

    check this shit out.

    1. Intro/Tokyo
    2. City Girl – Kevin Shields
    3. Fantino – Sebastien Tellier
    4. Tommib – Squarepusher
    5. Girls – Death In Vegas
    6. Goodbye – Kevin Shields
    7. Too Young – Phoenix
    8. Kaze Wo Atsumete – Happy End
    9. On the Subway – Brian Reitzell & Roger J. Manning Jr
    10. Ikebana – Kevin Shields
    11. Sometimes – My Bloody Valentine
    12. Alone in Kyoto – Air
    13. Shibuya – Brian Reitzell & Roger J. Manning Jr
    14. Are You Awake? – Kevin Shields
    15. Just Like Honey – The Jesus and Mary Chain

  97. If Tarnation had had a commercially available soundtrack, it would’ve been incredible. Some artists included in the movie include:

    Low (“Laser Beam” and “Embrace”)
    Magnetic Fields (“Strange Powers”)
Chocolate Watch Band (cover of Dylan’s “It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue”)
    Mark Kozelek
Iron & Wine (“Naked As We Came”)
