In September Brandon Flowers told Rolling Stone:

“We’ve already proven that we can write a perfect pop song, but I admire bands like the Talking Heads for having hits that are still pop and rock, but out of the norm.”

And with that Mr. Brightside’s band holed up in a Vegas studio to record tunes Brandon promises will be worth the fuss. He tells MTV News:

“This album is one of the best albums in the past 20 years. There’s nothing that touches this album.”

Cocky much? Apparently we have the Boss to blame.

“I couldn’t believe how happy his music made me and how good it was. He’s a gift, and I didn’t know. I mean, I knew ‘Born in the USA’ and ‘Glory Days,’ but I didn’t know that he covered so much ground.”

Killers’ Born To Run 2006 (not the real title) should be out sometime this year, and — just guessing — will not be one of the best albums of the last twenty years. But good luck Brandon. Maybe leave the lip gloss behind this time.

    First!

    This is hilarious.

  2. This is exactly what Doug Fierger was saying when the Knack was about to release their second album. Bye bye Killers; Brandon just shot himself in the foot.

  3. and of course I meant Fieger.

  4. someone needs to tell this Flowers fellow that there’s room for only one Liam Gallagher in the world at a time.

I’m going to go out on a limb and say that this album will not sound anywhere near as good as anything by the Talking Heads, or Springsteen.

while we’re on the subject, when is joanna newsom releasing another album?

  7. I think he was probably talking about a Joy Division album.

  8. Geez, don’t these bands know that ego killed the radio star (or something like that)? Anybody remember Terrence Trent D’Arby? Of course not! He said his album was better than Sgt. Pepper. Whoops!

By the way, I can’t wait to hear the new Killers album and Tom Delonge’s new band (another victim of too much ego) so I can laugh at both of them. A lot.

  9. adam  |   Posted on May 5th, 2006

I hope it IS one of the best albums of the last 20 years. We can always use best albums of the last 20 years. Why do we have to settle for bullchuckle??

  10. i think he meant to say that they were going to milk Hot Fuss for the next 20 years before releasing another album

and every year, spin will still name them the band o’ the year

I actually think the Killers made a really solid debut album.

I totally get how derivative it is, how unoriginal, etc. But then again, so is The Editors and just about every other band right now.

That Killers record got a lot of play from my iPod.

  12. haris pilton  |   Posted on May 5th, 2006

yeah but when’s the new joanna newsom album coming out?

  13. Last twenty years? So, since 1986? That shouldn’t be too hard.

When this album flops, will someone take Ultragrrl’s label away from her please?

  15. Did anybody HEAR the first Killers disk? Can we all stop being so jaded that we can’t like anything on top fourty radio for a minute and appreciate a good freaking CD when we hear it? Jesus.

If this was said about a Weezer CD we’d all be jumping on board. Maybe it won’t be the best CD in 20 years, but come on, everything is the best of someting these days. Every new athlete is the best since (insert Jordan, Elway, Gretsky). Every new movie is the best since…

Let the dude talk like everyone else does and judge the CD seperate from it.

  16. derek  |   Posted on May 5th, 2006

Ha ha…Terrence Trent D’Arby is still making records, only his name is Kanye West…seriously, think about it.

  17. I’m glad Andrew’s one of the more level-headed people on here. I’m going to give everyone else the benefit of the doubt and say they’re not retarded… just seventeen.

There’s a reason The Killers made it to radio. They had a good sound that was safe (and relatively new to) the musical idiots that actually pay for albums.

And yeah, jerking off your release in front of everyone before it’s close to being released is pretty lame- but he may have a sense of humor and just be saying that.

    Music’s music.

I’m so over Brandon Flowers. And unfortunately, his bandmates will eventually look bad (if not already) because of his egocentrism. He’s been on my shit list since he started a shouting match between someone I was working with at a music fest a couple of years back. I hope this album flops.

who the fuck are the killers?

  29. Jack  |   Posted on May 5th, 2006

I personally don’t like the killers (sound/image/mormon ties), but the guy has the right to think he is making the greatest music in the last 20 years. He’ll just be one of the VERY few people who think that. But maybe this record will be the killers “Rubber Soul”, or even better their “stadium arcadium” (it sounds epic).

If he posts a whiney message on his blog about people stealing, I will post a more bitchy response.

  30. didn’t tom delonge essentially say the same thing about angels & airwaves six months ago (although, this is a less less extreme)? boy, when that pile leaked…

anyway. the new killers album will be a perfectly bland reprisal of hot fuss and it will scan many fewer copies (like, 2 mil.), just like third eye blind’s second album back in 1999 or whatever.

  31. I find Mr. Flowers’s candor refreshing. I thought I was alone in thinking he was the world’s most talented and significant musician. Now I see that there are at least two of us, and I no longer feel isolated from the concerns of my fellow man. Thank you, Brandon Flowers, for confessing how utterly pivotal you are to the state of music today.

    You absolute fucking douchebag.

  35. ok..i gotta say…i’m not a killer’s fan…and i highly doubt that their next album will even be the best album of the week that it’s released in…but…what else is he supposed say?…”yeah..our next album is going to be fairly mediocre…”??? ….sure…best album of the last 20 years is a little extreme…but the artist should be thinking that what they are doing is great..otherwise..what’s the point…

but if the killers somehow manage to top Kid A, from the aeroplane over the sea, or Nevermind….more power to ‘em….

  37. Susan G  |   Posted on May 5th, 2006

Let’s think for a second. Hot Fuss, a respectable pop album, didn’t earn a place in the top 3 of most top 10 lists of that year. Does this d-bag really think his band is making an album that’s ten times better than Hot Fuss…or does poor baby just want some attention? You’re climbing up a tall mountain Mr. Flowers, and I’m waiting at the bottom to punch you in the face when your album is released and you fall.

  38. dsven  |   Posted on May 5th, 2006

    Great point RP…

I have to ask…about 90% of posters seem to rip on any music that is commercially viable. Can I ask, in all sincerity, what are some current bands you like that either are being played, or you could imagine being played, on commercial radio?

I’m serious, I want to have a listen myself.

  39. fido  |   Posted on May 5th, 2006

“We’ve already proven that we can write a perfect pop song.” When? Where was I? I couldn’t hear it through “Mr. Brightside” and “Somebody Told Me” on the radio.

Their music is just like Vegas, their home town. It’s all glam, no real substance, but the shows are alright though. The music is not original enough to be relevant and it’s not studied enough to be music appreciation. So what is it?

And I’m offended that he compared his band to Talking Heads. Uhm…where’s my fucking break please?

And this is coming from someone who has, in fact, listened to the entire album. Twice even. The first half is alright at best and then it gets really tiring. I’ve even heard a few b-sides. That “Glamorous Indie Rock n’ Roll” song is complete shit. If it were good satire, even though I’m the target, I could appreciate it. But it’s just a bad song.

Go to hell, and quit singing like you’re British, asshole.

  40. what a doofus. but seriously, when is the Joanna Jameson album coming out.

  44. sure, his statement is ridiculous and cocky as hell, but at least he knows Bruce is the shit. and I know for a fact that many of you have some catching up to do in that regard.

  45. TerryW  |   Posted on May 5th, 2006

The album’s linear notes should include the following: In case you need to be told what is good music, this cd is good music. The best album of the past 20 years. It is so good in fact that you will buy the limited edition (two unreleased tracks!!!) with dvd version that will be released two months after MTV is done pumping this album from the rear. By the way, I’m Brandon Flowers and please love me.

  46. I’m looking forward to hearing the album since they’ve been milking Hot Fuss til it’s bone dry; however Brandon’s comment gauranteed that it will not live up to the hype, since saying it’s the best album in the past 20 years is ridiculous. But the thing is, no one can say how it will be until we hear it, plain and simple. It’s useless to discuss it. Although we will still do so.

  47. Question Mark  |   Posted on May 5th, 2006

If the only way he is going to be genuinely different from other musicians (besides kanye and the boys of oasis) is by complimenting himself to high heaven, then I think it is fair for us to criticize him. His music needs to talk, not him.

  48. in all honesty, i listened to Hot Fuss more times than i count…had the UK version before it was out in the US…etc. i don’t think any of us need to be elite enough to say the killers aren’t great…cuz we all know we’ve loved them (a lot) at some point. I question this “one of the best” theory but if i were a “rockstar” it’d be fun to a be a little cocky too. I’m excited to see what they put out. Hot Fuss was solid…front to back.

  49. I can’t wait until this album sucks!

  50. jenny  |   Posted on May 5th, 2006

Hot Fuss was a good cd. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves Mr. Flowers. This best in 20 years cd is most likely going to be fairly well received, but not cherished through the ages. Expect a 3 1/2 to 4 stars from Rolling Stone, a 5.4 from pitchfork, and the usual “i love it” here and “i hate it” there comments on message boards. And of course it’s going to make some good money. Don’t need to touch yourself over it.

  51. Jack  |   Posted on May 5th, 2006

    Dvsen:
you make a good point about people bashing anything that isn’t super-under-ground indie. How else would they maintain their indie credibility? But you do have to admit the chillis new album isn’t anything amazing, and I doubt the killers new one will be either.

As for an honest answer of what I have heard (and enjoyed) this week on the radio (I live in the midwest): the flaming lips, raconteurs, YYY’s, belle and sebastian, eagles of death medal, ok go.

  52. Tyler  |   Posted on May 5th, 2006

Hot Fuss was like the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie. It was a stylish and enjoyable watch, and it had an element or two (mostly Johnny Depp’s amazingness) that put it ahead of most of the summer fair. I think that hype is up for Pirates 2 because they aren’t saying that it’s something that it’s not. I think many of us fans of the first movie will welcome another go with the cast and story for nostalgic reasons and the hope that it’ll be nearly as good as the first movie, but we do realize that it won’t be the second Godfather movie. Ugh…this guy is just pissing me off too much with his comment. I’m not finishing this post. What a dick.

  53. I know if I had an aalbum to promote and a reporter asked me to describe it, I’d probably say, “Well, it’s mediocre, MOR stuff, really. You’ll probably listen to it a lot for a month or so and then forget about it.” That would get people talking about it!

  54. Jabroni  |   Posted on May 5th, 2006

Okay, in the case that all music today we’re judged by pure theory and skill, almost everything we find amazing would suck and be considered shit. So that being said, most of everything is opinion based. My opinion, The Killers not only suck and rip off the same chord progressions and then put his synth to a different setting and do the same thing over. But live, they we’re almost un-believable. Like they had no heart and Brandon Flowers looked like a scared puppy dog. Girls loved it, guys thought lame. I saw them for 1.05 due to a radio promotion and it was sold out and I felt jipped out of a dollar. That’s saying something. If you like it, you like it, but seriously this guys a cocky asshole for no reason to be. Girls please stop feeding this mans ego.

  56. Jack  |   Posted on May 5th, 2006

I was lucky enough to see them at a festival, where I could walk away and catch an equally pretentious act (Dandy Warhols). But I agree completely- the Killers were terrible live.

  57. You guys are all missing the point… he’s just doing his best Bono impersonation.

  58. wesley  |   Posted on May 5th, 2006

Really, aren’t the Killers like the Seven Mary Three of New Wave revival? Has Mr. Flowers become cumbersome? Yeah yeah yeah no-oh! No no no yeahah!

  59. is this the line for the NEW Cars/Blondie tickets?

  60. swigglyu  |   Posted on May 5th, 2006

how aren’t SPOON as big as the killers, or bigger they really should be the biggest rock band in the world right now.

  61. richard  |   Posted on May 5th, 2006

Killers are more like the Pearl Jam of New Wave with Interpol being the Nirvana.

And the Strokes are … like … the Lightning Seeds?

  62. Patrick  |   Posted on May 5th, 2006

I can’t imagine where all this outrage is coming from. Of course he thinks it’s going to be a great album and why shouldn’t he? Any artist who goes into the studio plans to make the best album he/she could possibly make. If they have any confidence in themselves as an artist whatsoever, they may even find themselves making grandiose statements such as those of Mr. Flowers, Kanye, Bono, etc…

What exactly do you expect these people to say?

“Hi, I’m Brandon Flowers. Our new record is kind of sucking right now, but I’m sure it’ll be listenable by the time its released.”

That kind of thing doesn’t sell records and any artist who feels that way will probably never make it to the mainstream as The Killers have anyway.

And before anyone even suggests it, no, I do not in any way believe that it WILL be the best album of the last 20 years. In fact, I’m pretty sure it won’t be. But I do respect Flowers for believing it and I hope it DOES push the band to make a great follow-up. “Hot Fuss” was a memorable pop album; no more, no less.

Everything beyond that is hype and speculation. If you can’t just accept that and move on, you need to get out more.

  63. because if Rivers Cuomo had the audacity to say his next album would be the best in the last 20 years i would actually give that mofo the benefit of the doubt. he wrote pinkerton people!

  69. I Heart Brandon  |   Posted on May 5th, 2006

Say, how’s that Killers movie coming along? That one they promised a year ago? Based on “Hot Fuss”? Yeah, that sounded like that would be a good movie. I hope it comes out soon.

  70. Hugh  |   Posted on May 5th, 2006

i think that the killers are not good because they are not good at making music so i do not listen to them because they are bad and not good.

  71. Devin  |   Posted on May 5th, 2006

“Killers are more like the Pearl Jam of New Wave with Interpol being the Nirvana.”

yeah, that pretty much sums it up. I think it’s difficult to say what super indie bands could possibly be played on the radio today, because it’s in a much different state today. While the indie fans could before force certain bands to get airplay, now they’ve turned away because of the internet. There’s no use for actual music fans to turn on the radio for new music when there’s 1000′s of new bands they can read about on blogs. To fill the gap in radio, derivative bands like the killers come along and play a watered down easy to swallow take on music for the less musically inclined, more stuffing face full of food while driving, and feel like they’re onto something. It’s comparable with people who grew up in the 60′s and only liked the beatles, then thought the rolling stones revolutionized rock. (but never heard about the velvet underground, the eyes, soft machine etc.)

  72. eric  |   Posted on May 5th, 2006

the 2nd killers album is going to pull a hot hot heat ‘elevators’ style and go right now the toilet. sweet fancy moses was that a fucking horrible piece of crap.

  73. wyldman  |   Posted on May 5th, 2006

No band* ever says “We are in the studio making our new album and it stinks like a dead tramp in a heatwave.” Even if it will.

*The exception being the Beta Band, who disowned their follow up to the Three EPs before it had even come out.

  74. derek  |   Posted on May 5th, 2006

I dig the TT D’Arby as well…just remembering that, at one point, he promised that an album of his would make everyone forget “Sgt. Pepper’s…”. Kanye West is about a year or so away from making a comment of that magnitude, and when he does, it’s going to be glorious.

  75. jack  |   Posted on May 5th, 2006

Nice Bravery reference- in two years no one will know what it means”

I think you owe Steven Cobert $2 royalty for that post. Yeah: too soon.

Spoon should be bigger than U2 by now. Word on the street they don’t give a shit about world hunger.

  76. fred  |   Posted on May 5th, 2006

“Killers are more like the Pearl Jam of New Wave with Interpol being the Nirvana.”

The Killers are more like the Fiery Furnaces of New New Wave, and the Bravery are the Yeah,Yeah,Yeahs.

  77. high pich  |   Posted on May 5th, 2006

Their new album is going to suck worse than having to explain a dead hooker in the spa to your girlfriend on her birthday.

  78. Why stop at 20 years? It’ll be the best album of the last 100 years. 1000 years. It is better than anything released in the last incarnation of the universe. The album released by the Choirs of Heaven can’t touch this thing. This album will cure heart defects. We played a demo and it revealed the secrets of cold fusion. The first single will ensure peace in the Middle East.

But seriously, it’s not that hard to give a slightly less annoying answer. “We think this album is even better than Hot Fuss. It might even be the best thing you’ll hear this year.” Then you just sound like you think your album is great, instead of sounding like someone who has no clue about what constitutes good music.

  79. MikeyK  |   Posted on May 6th, 2006

    To Everyone who commented
“What are they supposed to say, their abum’s crap”

They could have said a multitude of things while simultaneously believing in their album and not sounding like cunts. Hasn’t anyone heard of humility, restraint, being humble etc…

If this motherfucker thinks he wrote a record that even comes close to being the best of the year, much less the last six years (Anyone listened to “Kid A” or “Discovery” lately?) he is delusional. Remember, this is the same fucker that wrote a song with “it’s only indie rock to me” in the lyrics and simultaneosly ripped off a Smiths bassline (listen to “Barbarism Begins at Home”, compare to “Jenny was a friend of Mine”). Blasphemy! Die Killers, Die.

  80. Rich  |   Posted on May 6th, 2006

the killers are a good band. I was introduced to them on a college radio station in summer of 2003 from a demo CD. I really enjoyed Mr Brightside and when i heard their other songs, I had to buy their album. Its catchy, retro, and all the round good music. But considering Flower’s statement, thats saying a bit much. Not saying that it wont be good, but it wont be the best in 20 years. Unless he pulls off some sort of miracle and discovers a whole new genre of music. Who knows, its actually possible, but not likely in the real world.

  81. wesley  |   Posted on May 6th, 2006

No, people, my comparison works like this: if Interpol is Nirvana (we’ll stick with that), and Metric (sure, why not?) is Soundgarden, and Ladytron is Pearl Jam (i guess the Faint is like Mudhoney or the Pixies?), then the Killers are like Seven Mary Three. As in, the Killers are a limited to no talent group used by their record label to cash in on a trend. Seven Mary Three, for those under the age of twenty, were a subpar wanna be grunge band circa 1994-5. They were not even as bad as the Nixons, though. Yikes.

But the real question is, when does the new Gang Gang Dance record come out?

  82. Thank you, MikeyK. Of course Brandon Flowers doesn’t have to say his next record is going to blow, but really, making a ludicrously cocky and meglamonical statement like what he said is not excusable. I don’t care if he’s a musician who’s proud of his work. He easily could have just said, “I think this is the best work we’ve ever done” and he could’ve gotten his point across. The problem with his arrogance is that his statement is doubtfully going to come true, and thus, when the second Killers album does come out, it will be open to a shitload of more scrutiny than it would had he kept his mouth shut.

And by the way, what is “super underground indie”? I hardly consider Tapes N’ Tapes and the like “super underground.”

  83. If they have any confidence in themselves as an artist whatsoever…

this is my favorite line from this thread. i think from now on all bands should be required to declare their next album the best of the last 20 years.

  84. leeb  |   Posted on May 6th, 2006

  85. fido  |   Posted on May 8th, 2006

Ok, I’m in a band. Before I started performing, friends would ask me what I was doing with my music. I never said, “Oh, it’s really progressive. I’m a genius. I’m the most forward thinking artist you’ll ever hear.” Instead, I usually tried to describe what the music sounds like, giving no nod to what I thought about the quality of my own music. The most I’ll ever say is that “Oh, I really like this one keyboard part” or “I’m really satisfied with the lyrics of that song.” It’s not that I’m trying to be humble. I simply don’t want to sound like Flowers or, even worse, Anton Newcombe.

  86. nylund  |   Posted on May 8th, 2006

if the guy had just barely started listening to The Boss, one of the biggest acts in the last 30 years, then I suspect he really hasn’t heard all that much music in his life.

I suspect the same is true of most of their fans. Most people I know who really love the killers have a very short list of things they know well enough to compare it to. How many Hot Fuss fans really know “More songs about buildings and food,” much less an album like The Modern Dance or A Trip to Marineville. Hell, most of them probably haven’t even ever heard Beggers Banquet from beginning to end.

And if they have…Jesus…how can you still think its anything but crap?

Its like a bunch of vegans who just ate some slim-jims thinking they know something about quality cuts of meat.

just wondering: anyone else thinks that this “i’ve got soul but i’m not a soldier” song or something like that sounds like a total copy of the beatles’ “two of us” mixed with oasis’ “roll with it”? i can’t believe i’ve never seen anyone mention it…

  88. since when did the killers become so relevant?
their last album was not great. They havent done anything but appeal to kids who dont know any better.
Saying this is just like 50 cents dissing everyone before an albums comes out…its jus to get attention and make you go out to buy the album..to love or criticize it….either way they are going to make their money.

Personally I dont think they can make an Is this it? shit! i dont think they can make a better album than their first.

Mediocre bands talking smack…its not the first time.

At least the Strokes don’t say stupid crap like that. They give off the impression that no matter what they just do not care. They respect their elders as seen in their recent comments about Pearl Jam. Finally, they have a much cooler, dynamic, clever, witty web site than The Killers. Hot Fuss was just a couple of years after Is This It. The Strokes made the album that changed music that the Killers wished they had made. I know this sounds like I am just another Strokes fanatic and I will be insulted within seconds of posting, but who the hell cares. I would rather be a little original, then from Vegas. When was the last time you heard anything original from Vegas, the tourist capitol of the world?

Freja, you are one dumb bitch! Please remove your head from your ass as soon as humanly possible…

ALL THERE MUSIC ROCKS!!! AND DONT YOU EVER SAY ANYTHING BAD ABOUT MY BABY!!! AND IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM EMAIL ME!!!!

That is one of the most grotesque paragraphs I’ve read in my entire life–utterly pathetic.

As far as the Strokes respecting their elders… check out their interviews around the release of Room on Fire (Spin) before they were humbled by their album sales…

When the hell is the new Joanna Newsom album coming out?

Wait, you mean they’re remaking another U2 album? Seriously? I wouldn’t even put U2 in the best album in the past 20 years catagory, but to each his own.

Man, he should have gone balls out, How about best album in the past 5000 years, then he’d have Bach and Beethoven to compete with and shit.

If any one is cocky, it is all of you who are calling Brandon Flowers cocky. The guy has a right to an opinion let alone an opinion about his own work. It very much could be one of the greatest albums of the last 20 years and WOOPDIDOOO if thats what he thinks. GET OVER IT. What is he supposed to say, “Don’t buy it, it sucks”. Do you people even have the album, exactly, how would you know.

Anyway, you guys are arrogant and have big ego’s. I mean anyone who hasn’t sold a single album or who isn’t even in a band that thinks they know everything about someone who lives on the otherside of the world who has just sold 3 million copies in the US alone has a big ego and thats for sure.
