  1. Someone is loved… you!

    You are loved!

  2. Wait for my flashy retail store on 5th Ave.

  3. Good to see Stereogum is in the top 10. I would’ve put Pandora first though – that is one awesome music site, and if the Music Genome Project (the music database behind Pandora) were better utilitsed by third party companies, then I would have to say that it would be better than Gracenote.

    http://www.musictimes.com.au

  4. Its nice to see the number of blogs that made it on the list. #7 over a lot of great sites is a real accomplishment.

  5. hah, well ahead of pitchfork
    nice one!

  6. memememe  |   Posted on May 20th, 2006

Glad to see stereogum in there, but jefitoblog.com needs to be, too.

  7. justin  |   Posted on May 20th, 2006

i think it’s the K-Fed coverage that seperates you guys from the rest of the indie bloggers.

  8. Dave  |   Posted on May 20th, 2006

    Nice work Stereogum.

  9. Alicia  |   Posted on May 20th, 2006

So how does it feel to kick Pitchfork’s ass in 13 different ways?

  10. i think its funny that your link to pitchfork goes to a “livestock world” webpage…always stickin’ it to ‘em, stereogum.

  11. Axl Foley  |   Posted on May 20th, 2006

“i think its funny that your link to pitchfork goes to a “livestock world” webpage…always stickin’ it to ‘em, stereogum.”

I think it’s funny that you’re checking the validity of all the links, way to go!!!

congrats Stereogum, but go easy on the Britt/K Fed story and gimmie some stories about Beirut and you stalking Sufjan.

  12. Sarah  |   Posted on May 20th, 2006

    Congrats!

  13. nick  |   Posted on May 20th, 2006

no hype machine on there? are you fucking joking?

  14. Would love to see The 25 Best Music Websites too.

  15. Would love to see The 25 Best Music blogs too

  16. Well done!

Why is iTunes #1 though? Its not very informative, the files only work on one mp3 player, it is very restrictive in what it puts on the servers. Heck, I’d even rate Purevolume above it.

  17. Little Steven’s Underground Garage?

They have to be kidding. Stay away from the irony EW, unintentional or not.

  18. Nadim  |   Posted on May 20th, 2006

I came out of this actually feeling sorry for Pitchfork…

and is Pandora really better than last.fm? cause i’ve experienced otherwise.

  19. Stereogum is definitely better than Pitchfork! As is, in fact, Fluxblog, and all the other MP3 blogs up there. Yay!

  20. Danielle  |   Posted on May 20th, 2006

    I think they forgot last.fm

  21. brett  |   Posted on May 20th, 2006

    wooo hoo woxy!

  22. i’m with nick. hype machine is the shit. (they got pub in rolling stone’s 1000th anniversary issue, so i guess that’s cool…)

  23. Last.fm!  |   Posted on May 20th, 2006

    Last.fm?!

  24. Wow, you did slam pitchfork… good work. You guys are better than them by a mile. But where is last.fm, buddyhead’s blog and fluxblog? There’s a few on there I’ve never even heard of! Oh well.

  25. Stereogum for president~!

  26. nice job stereogum, congrats

but what about last.fm? I love their player, way better than pandora, I can’t believe it’s not even on the list

  27. Way to go, Stereogum. Glad to see eMusic right up there, too.

    AC

  28. What’s eventually going to flatten and overhype all the great blogs are lists like these from such well respected magazines. Music media is basically trying to push everyone against Pitchfork which I totally get. I don’t know anyone who truly loves Pitchfork, but I also don’t know a single music fan that could live without it. Anyway, it’s totally fucking cool that someone decided to place Stereogum at #7. Where the hell is GvB?

  29. Anthony  |   Posted on May 20th, 2006

Last.fm has to be on the list! They are an incredible project for discovering and cataloging music that people like.

Observer Music Monthly has a better list: http://observer.guardian.co.uk/omm/story/0,,1729834,00.html

  30. Who gives a shit what Entertainment Weekly says? I guess there’s schadenfreude in Pitchfork being rated so low, but this reeks of some kind of inferiority complex by whomever put this list together. Sure, Pitchfork can be unbearably pretentious at times, but there’s not a better resource for music on the web. Or there wasn’t enough pop coverage on the site to justify a high ranking – but then, why is Stereogum so high? Pitchfork has a good relationship with just about every major indie act today – I learned a bit more about Sufjan Stevens from their actual interview with him than Stereogum’s just slinking off behind him at some concert. Pitchfork, if not lovable, is certainly essential.

  31. unfortunately… the observer list works more for me too.

drownedinsound, resonance, wikipedia and last.fm are quite important to me.

  32. Am I alone in having never really found a new band I liked on Pandora? The website seems to work a lot better in theory than in practice, at least in my experience.

  33. melina  |   Posted on May 20th, 2006

Lucky Number Seven! Nice!!! Congrats…and, I too was wondering about last.fm.

  34. Joe = my hero

  35. While it’s to be awesome #7 on the list, no one seems to have mentioned that stereogum is the the #1 music blog on the list. It’s the highest-rated non corporate site (outside the Live Music Archive)That’s fucking awesome guys. Congratulations Scott and crew!

  36. http://www.pitchfork.com is not a good music site… i was expecting to hear the newest gossip on radiohead- instead, i found out about adverts and barns.

    DOWN WITH PITCHFORK.COM!!!1!!!eleven!!!

  37. to reiterate what’s already been said a few thousand times, i agree that last.fm would’ve been nice

but it’s even nicer that stereogum made it… well done

  38. Congrats on #7! I think http://www.kevchino.com should be on too!

  39. Foley  |   Posted on May 20th, 2006

where’s brooklynvegan.com? that’s the most informative site on the internets.

  40. doug  |   Posted on May 20th, 2006

    needs more hipinion.com

  41. KingHarvest  |   Posted on May 20th, 2006

Last.fm is the only possible #1! Sorry.

  42. chris  |   Posted on May 21st, 2006

wait. stereogum is a music site? how about that.

  43. Stephen  |   Posted on May 21st, 2006

Maybe I’m ignorant here but is there some reason allmusic.com isn’t on there? It’s to music what imdb.com is for movies, how can it NOT be considered?

  44. Axl Foley  |   Posted on May 21st, 2006

pandora stinks…i put in sunset rubdown and they recommended scott weilands solo cd. wtf?!

  45. Squashed  |   Posted on May 21st, 2006

    That list is just

a list of Viacom / Warner Brother / AOL / music industry webpages directory.

That has nothing to do with “Music website” let alone “Best music website”

the goal of that list is obviously making people “BUY” stuff from entertainment weekly associates corporations.

It’s pretty transparent. It’s not informing/entertaining the people. It’s advertisement in guise of informing.

  46. pissed  |   Posted on May 21st, 2006

    where the heck is popmatter???!

  47. Troy  |   Posted on May 21st, 2006

I’m surprised no one has mentioned my personal favorite, Large Hearted Boy.

  48. congrats!

  49. Hey, congratulations! You’re pretty high up on that list! It’s well deserved.

  50. Congrats Steregoum!

The title is “The 25 Best Music Websites”, but then in the intro it says “See Entertainment Weekly’s picks for where to pick up on hot new tunes”.

If it’s a matter of what sites clue readers into the latest music, I’d have Pfork higher. Although people love to hate them they due to write up new bands faster than any other one site consistently.

If the article were actually about “Best Music Websites”, I’d definitely add Allmusic and Billboard.

I like Stylus. Its articles have much more effort put into them then most others on the internet.

  53. eyejob  |   Posted on May 21st, 2006

I agree that ALLMUSIC.COM needs to be on there, and should probably be #1.

MySpace should be #2 after that.

    what about Coolfer?

  54. you must be rich, scotty.

  55. Maybe it is a bit corporate, but whatevs; it’s cool to see Stereogum on there (you definitely deserve to be on any list, I say). I used to love Audioscrobbler before it went under, and I think they were affiliated with last.fm. i haven’t checked last.fm out, though.

  56. robbie  |   Posted on May 22nd, 2006

the ‘listen again’ feature on steve lamaque’s page on bbc radio is pretty tasty (the documentaries and ever-recent live sets are a godsend). Anyone know a way to get those sort of things into an mp3 format? bootleg heaven.

  57. Yay for stereogum and eMusic! well deserved listings there.

I’d agree that Hype Machine was overlooked. plus: what, no http://20jazzfunkgreats.blogspot.com/ ?

re the OMM list — what the fuck, coolhunting.com at #3? roffles. great if you live in London and want to keep ahead of the other Nathan Barleys, I suppose, but this list here seems to have a bit more *music* involved.

  58. blake  |   Posted on May 22nd, 2006

    HYPE MACHINE BITCHES!!

  59. richard  |   Posted on May 22nd, 2006

allmusic is good for some things, but their current electronic coverage sucks…

they don’t even have a bio for booka shade or mandy…ugh.

  60. Holla  |   Posted on May 22nd, 2006

I love how everyone picked up on the pitchfork.com linkage, but no one noticed where stereogum leads…thanks k-fed

  61. indeed  |   Posted on May 22nd, 2006

last.fm will suck as long as it continues to compile the group stats the way it does. listen-to.com had a much better format for that.

  62. this is RIVETING news…

    OVER-RATED

  63. congrats, scott! i think they probably refer to all the podcasts connected to itunes… just a guess.

  64. Allmusic.com. Best music site period. Who cares if I can’t get the cookies to work to listen to clips of music, it’s still amazingly informational.

  65. Tony G  |   Posted on May 22nd, 2006

Where’s Stylus Magazine? It’s a million times better than Pitchfart.

  66. hey i just saw that mag tonight and i wrote all the sites that i found interesting in the little memo pad in my cell phone. now that you’ve linked them all…it’s much more convenient. i didn’t think stereogum was that popular but i guess it is! congrats :)

  67. milan  |   Posted on May 23rd, 2006

this is kind of not a huge deal, but i would technically categorize itunes a website as well as an application, considering you can copy URLs.

  68. Leaving allmusic.com off the list is inexcusable. And if they do this list again in 2 years, The Hype Machine just might be #1.

  69. congrats stereogum — you guys are on my favorites on the web. nice to have something other than music reviews to waste away my first three hours at work with. i have to say, however, that all the pitchfork backlash is ridiculous…”yeah, i’m so ahead of the scene”. get over it douchebags; fact is, pitchfork is still the best music website on the web, without a doubt. don’t even get me started on stylus, that steaming shitpile of a website, with its endless reviews of new scandinavian doom-metal albums that are set to “send your shit scrambling back to your asshole!” i feel way better now.

  70. that last post was supposed to read “one of my favorites,” and not the pretentious sounding, “on my favorites”.

  71. Pandora is great, the one thing lacking with Pandora is the fixed size/style of the player. I did a few mockups of vertical layouts of the player. I posted them on my blog:
    http://3e-lab.com/blog/05/10/biz/pandora-mini-player-revised-layout-idea/

  72. I’ve got to agree with the other folks here that the omission of Last.fm was a terrible oversight. Of all the sites listed here, Last.fm is the only one that has consistently helped me discover new music that I really like.

  73. I am a HUGE fan of DFTD, otherwise known as http://www.dontforgettodance.com

They feature some awesome music and at times have “theme weeks”. The current theme is local unkown bands from all of the contributors, some of which are in Brooklyn, Columbus, Detroit. Check is out!

  74. How about http://musiczeitgeist.com – steady, unbiased, never hipper-than-thou and they seem to actually go to shows. Usually long before the bands break, but they usually do. Look at their dates/reviews.

  75. Sure not the best but useful:

    http://myfavbands.com

Track your favourite bands and get notified about new releases and gigs in your city.

  76. Dear Friend

Your music download website list is very nice i most like apple & emusic website.Other sites are also great. Lot of Thanks for this.

    http://mobijoy.com

  77. Thanks for sharing.
The link below also recommends a good website to download free ringtones. Hope you like it. Thanks.
    http://www.quertime.com/article/arn-2010-09-09-1-download-free-ringtones-for-mobile-phone-or-cell-phone/

  78. They forgot to mention http://www.IamRenoCapital.com – Music, Media and BUZZ! -

  79. I’ve made up a list of the top 10 largest music sites which I thought you might like, also i made up top 10 categories in a bunch of other stuff at http://www.toplisthomepage.com.

  80. Solid list.

If you are looking for more indie music, check out my new album, “You might not be ready but your kids are going to love it.” You can listen to the entire album for free here:

    http://www.myspace.com/repertoire/music/albums/you-might-not-be-ready-but-your-kids-are-going-to-love-it-17594565

    -Repertoire

  81. RhythmScore is a brand new music website: http://www.rhythmscore.com

  82. Ok list but out of all those sites, I can say with a one hundred percent feel to it that the web site

—– > theneverendingstage.com is the best of that group! They help bands to get the

word out for free, free to join!

  83. I reckon that Pig City Records will be up there eventually. http://www.pigcityrecords.com It reviews older records as they come out. Pretty cool
