WHAT? Stereogum’s posting about Nelly Furtado? I know, I wouldn’t have expected it either. I hated her like-a-bird ways, until I heard the infectious “Promiscuous” and “Maneater.” Here are both peformances from SNL:

A) She’s sexy and B) doesn’t use auto tune.
NEKO CASE: I’m not a perfect note hitter either but I’m not going to cover it up with auto tune. Everybody uses it, too. I once asked a studio guy in Toronto, “How many people don’t use auto tune?” and he said, “You and Nelly Furtado are the only two people who’ve never used it in here.” Even though I’m not into Nelly Furtado, it kind of made me respect her. It’s cool that she has some integrity.
I admit there’s something sacrilegious about calling your song “Maneater.” That title BELONGS to Daryl and John, got it Nelly?
I guess this is my guilty pleasure for spring, much like Gwen Stefani was last year. And the back and forth with Timba on “Promiscuous” reminds me of that ’93 Positive K hit “I Got A Man.”

nelly f and timbaland you’d think the joint would be cool. Saw the video and then the performance on Saturday and it blew. I thought was the same as J, it’s a poor man’s My Humps and it’s lousy. Hey, we all have our guilty pleasures and all but Scott your usually accurate musical sensibilities are way off on this one. Ouch!
Other than Nelly’s fab badankadonk this song is horrible. SNL dance moves were laughable but not as bad as Timbos awkwardness on this lame attempt to make ‘promiscuous’ a summer lexicon addition to a shit saturated top 40 list.

Nelly put on two of the worst performances I have ever had the misfortune to see. The songs were embarrassing, and the slutty getups just made me feel sort of sad for her–it is clearly a lame sell-out maneuver, and the most awkward attempt at pop reinvention since Jewel’s penultimate stinker.

It’s fine by me that Nelly Furtado is doing full hip hop songs rather than just infusing hip hop in parts of her songs like on ‘Whoa, Nelly’. I know she’s not faking her love of Hip Hop. I just wish she didn’t become a more sexualized person than necessary in her performances, videos, interviews and vocals. It’s good that she doesn’t regularly dress like a ho but she doesn’t need those pounds of make-up either. Nelly is starting off now like what I’ve read or seen about Janet Jackson’s climb from being a little sexual to the attention seeking shock-value nympho-like figure. I hope Nelly won’t go further down Janet’s nympho road. It’s not enjoyable to lose respect for a person but not the concern. That’s how I feel about Janet now… I lost alot of respect for how she sought attention but I still hate to see her fail – it’s like a paradox of rooting for her yet not rooting for her.

Imagine if one day an artist like say….Tori Amos showed up on t.v slathered with bronzer, caked with greasy looking make-up asking you to move your body like a nympho. Like Tori, Nelly F had her own funky style, most of her songs were great, some not so much, but at least she was origional, at least she had a grass roots thing going on, she was interesting and exotic looking…then this happens.
She is nothing but a science project, and prime example of what the industry will do to artists.
