Yesterday I boarded JetBlue Flight 107 to Oakland when I was hit with two pieces of bad news. 1. I realized I left my iPod at home! 2. Thom Yorke’s “not-a-solo-album” The Eraser had leaked. Six hours later I’d watched Behind The Music: Ratt twice … but hadn’t heard a studio recording of “Cymbal Rush.” I’m borrowing a computer at the moment (a Mac, which I barely know how to use), and elbo.ws is taunting me. Tell me what I’m missing.

Radiohead Thom Yorke - Fog
Why music is still good business
"Don't tie yourself to the sinking ship," is the stark advice Radiohead singer Thom Yorke offers young bands. Yorke's view, that it's simply a matter of time before the music industry establishment crumbles, hardly makes him a contrarian. Physical sales in ...
Oddsmaking: Will Thom Yorke Dance Away With The Short-Form Music Video Grammy?
CONS: Will voters have Adele fatigue? Unlike other categories, where Adele is the clear respectable choice, here she's up against such critical luminaries as Radiohead. With no Bruno Mars or Katy Perry to split the pop vote, she could suffer. THE GIMMICK ...

  1. wow, great cover!

  2. Meh. On first listen I’m a little underwhelmed… I have to listen to it more.

It’s definitely a Thom Yorke album, you know, lots blips and bleeps.

  3. It’s not terribly “catchy,” per se, so alot of people will slag on it. In fact, it’ll add to the backlashers who need no reason to hate on an album. The album, though, is more comparable to Amnesiac than any of their other albums. Being said, “The Eraser,” “Black Swan,” and “It Rained all Night” are brillz.

it is a difficult first, second, and third listen. after that you start to notice how good it is.

  5. This album is fantastic, I have been listening for two days now and it gets better with each listen. It sounds almost what I thought Thom might do musically. Lots of bleeps and blips for sure. Plus it will hold us over while waiting for the new Radiohead album! Nice work Thom!

  6. How do you leave your iPod at home??? Man I would’ve forgotten everything else before I forgot that. That said the album is excellent!

  7. fred  |   Posted on May 31st, 2006

I gotta agree with JT, The Eraser, Black Swan, It Rained All Night are brilliant! But my personal favorite is “Harrowdown Hill”, mmm melancholy goodness!!

  8. eric  |   Posted on May 31st, 2006

Black Swan! Analyse is pretty good too. I’ll gladly listen to the new RH over this but I’m still very happy to get this bonus set of music.

  9. Only played it through once so far, but I’m digging it. I’m sure it’ll only grow on me further from here.

  10. Mark Swiderski  |   Posted on May 31st, 2006

Awesome, it’s like a whole album’s worth of “Treefingers!”

Just kidding. It’s interesting. “Black Swan” is that track that has the most immediacy.

  11. If you’re in town (the bay area, I mean), you should check out some shows. I’ll give you a quick run down (though I don’t know if they’re sold out or not).
Tonight: Pinback @ Bimbo’s 365 Club, Mono (the japanese post-rock mono) @ at the Great American Music Hall, the Eels and Smoosh @ the Fillmore, Arctic Monkeys and We are Scientists @ the Warfield (note: the Warfield is a pretty bad venue).
Friday: Danielson @ the Bottom of the Hill, the Boy Least Likely To @ Amoeba (free) and Great American
Saturday: Mark Kozelek and Jonathan Richman (Memphis 3 Benefit Show) @ Great American

  12. it’s pretty decent, specially for his first attempt at a “solo” record.

but it really does expose just how important the rest of the band is to Radiohead, as it’s definitely missing that extra something special. that said i like it a lot more than Amnesiac already.

favorite tracks are def It Rained All Night and Black Swan.

the last track’s backing beats are a bit annoying though.

it definitely sounds like some of the beats could have been leftover from Kid A/Amnesiac sessions though to be perfectly honest.

hopefully Pfork gives it the 7.8 or so it deserves and doesn’t go totally overboard with it.

but yes, bring on the new Radiohead more than anything

  13. hey oakland international airport! awesome.

  14. I'm Right  |   Posted on May 31st, 2006

If you love the Amnesiac b-sides then you will love this. I love the Amnesiac b-sides.

  15. i really dig it so far

  16. Thom is legendary. This album is insanely good.

  17. I hate to ask but…how do I download this?

  18. Darwin  |   Posted on May 31st, 2006

Yeah, a legendary prick! Bwa ha ha!!!

    Ha ha ha!

  19. fred  |   Posted on May 31st, 2006

Wow, that is hilarious Darwin. Why don’t you crawl back into your cave, you mongoloid.

  20. Spoil'd  |   Posted on May 31st, 2006

You don’t need to ask for our opinions. The album is awesome!!!

  21. i need this…. where can i download?!?1

  22. josh  |   Posted on May 31st, 2006

There is a song (i forget which) that TOTALLY rips joni mitchell off…

  23. Am I the only person under thirty that stills waits for albums to actually come out?
I could have easily spoiled the newest Morrissey, for example, but allayed my desires with the single.
Is there a pre-release single for Thom’s record?
    I must preserve my willpower.
Also, don’t make Thom as sad as Flea, please, because Thom can actually write a reasonable complaint letter.

  24. Billy K  |   Posted on May 31st, 2006

    “Tell me what I’m missing.”

You’re missing the joy of knowing a Mac.

  25. Eraser is great! The beats on Analyse are tight, so i’ll represent for that song. The entire album is very electronic and definetly not a Radiohead-y album, very melancholy, though.

  26. flea  |   Posted on May 31st, 2006

No way! No one could write a letter THIS GOOD:

and i know that, as sensitive as john frusciante is about sound
the idea of anyone getting and hearing this thing that way
    will devastate him
for people to not hear the work the way we meant it to be
will really hurt him deep inside and all of us will hurt

yes, it is stealing from us, and that is lame
everyone has to live with their own conscience on that one
    let it be your guide
but to take a version that has been defiled sound wise
a version in which some idiot has taken our year and a half of soul baring work and pissed all over it that will break our hearts

    sincerely,
    flea

  27. It Rained All Night was a good song, but I can’t believe he covered Britney Spears’s “Oops I did it again”. Holy crap. OUt of all the songs in the world to cover. Thom Yorke.. You’re killing me.

  28. The first song is especially amazing.

  29. One word: SWITCH

  30. Edward  |   Posted on May 31st, 2006

In a wierd-beard skewifflly way, Thom Yorke is paying tribute to his fave new band by naming track 6 “atoms for peace” after them

    myspace.com/atomsforpeace

nothing to do with the cold war, don’t be fooled.

  31. It’s good.

  32. alec  |   Posted on May 31st, 2006

macs rule! the eraser is cool too.

  33. its amazing………………………………..

  34. Andrew  |   Posted on Jun 1st, 2006

Wesley, I got your back man. I’m 23, and I can’t think of one album I’ve downloaded before it came out.

I wait till the album’s been released before I pirate it. Out of respect for the artist, and all that.

But seriously, yeah. There is still something to be said about the tactile response of TAKING A CD OUT and putting it in for the first time. It’s slightly more involving than double-clicking, I feel.

  35. the idiot  |   Posted on Jun 1st, 2006

there’s 2 types of music, in these modern times:

type 1: music you want, and will pay for (to be kept on a shelf near your turntable or whatever, so you can admire your canon of the “greats”, and show off when a friend comes over)

type 2: music you want but can’t be arsed paying for (to be kept on your ipod, so you can tell your friend when they come over that you have it)

    some recent examples:

type 1: ‘ships’ by danielson , ‘gulag okestrar’ by beirut,

type 2: ‘broken boy soldiers’ by the raconteurs, ‘riot city blues’ the hilarious new primal scream album

as much as you hate to admit it, you enjoy type 2 music WAY more, and will buy it when it’s in the $5/£5 bargain bucket, while the latest tungg cd gathers dust, unloved on your show-off shelf.

I’m with Andrew. I’m 17 and if I give even the smallest damn about an artist, I don’t download their music before it’s even bloody well been released. Where is your respect, people??

  38. jake  |   Posted on Jun 1st, 2006

thom yorke has a lazy eye!

  39. kylie  |   Posted on Jun 1st, 2006

i agree with whoever said you have to listen to it a few times before you realize how good it is…. it’s definitely a beautiful piece of work. and to those who are complaining about downloaders: if i really like a band and the album, i will support them completely and go buy the album after i download it. but if i get it and realize it’s not something i’m going to listen to on a regular basis, then i don’t. *shrugs* that’s how i roll.

  40. bret  |   Posted on Jun 2nd, 2006

  41. fred  |   Posted on Jun 2nd, 2006

  42. i really wanna download this leak, but for some reason im scared to… :(

  43. christian  |   Posted on Jun 2nd, 2006
