After an unofficial survey of the entire planet NY Post have anointed Red Hot Chili Peppers “the most popular band on earth.”

As of the June 17 charts, the quartet’s double disc, Stadium Arcadium, released just four weeks ago, has secured a top 10 spot in virtually every country where sales records are kept.

In your face Oasis.

Cool. I was pleasantly surprised by Stadium Arcadium….as far as mainstream rock goes, one could do far worse.

That being said, let the sarcastic, pissed-off posts begin.

It’s just music people. If you like it, you like it.

More like the biggest copycat on earth.

    Oh snaaaaaapppppp!!!

Had to get it out there early.

  4. I guess you can’t be distracted by the shitty lyrics if you can’t understand them.

  6. check out “frusciante” by the poo poodles. (duh, myspace.com/poopoodles)

I’ve got nothing to add to this story, other than the shameless self-promotion.

But, I’ll probably crack and buy this record (even though I don’t like anything on it that I’ve heard so far) in about 3 months, once they release the “special edition” with the 10 other tracks, etc. My love for this bunch of knuckleheads is hard to shake, it’s like Star Wars.

  7. After watching the DVD Live At Slane Castle several times i think they should be “the most popular band on earth”.

  8. and as we all know the NY Post is the most credible and reliable news paper out there. really in tune with music too

    *cough*radiohead=biggestbandintheworld*cough*

No, I think the NY Post assessment is about right….for example, Radiohead may be a great band and far more critically respected, and with a sizable, rabid fan base…but “most popular”…not even close. Their last few albums debut well and have all sunk like a stone within a few weeks into the nether regions of the charts. RHCP truly are mega-selling, and for the most part, at least begrudgingly accepted by critics as a decent band.
My 2 cents. For what it’s worth.

how can you call out the NY post when they are just reporting what the charts say. it’s damn impressive that the peppers have charted and remained in the top 10 in so many different countries.

  11. Its a well deserved position, though I think Coldplay and U2 would have to be close behind. And, I know Australia never counts in these things, but I have to say that we haven’t heard of anything Oasis here in years. Seriously, are they still together?

Oasis put out a pretty awesome album last year. Best one in years, I think.

    What?

That is not right; I want to vomit.

Ummm…I like them, always have, but…

WTF? There are so many other bands that would be more fitting of that “title”. Or maybe it’s because I don’t really pay attention to what everybody’s listening to nowadays…whatevs. Staium Arcadium was alright, though.

  15. jazzmatazz  |   Posted on Jun 21st, 2006

Why are some posters finding this so hard to accept? If you define “most popular” AT THIS MOMENT as current album sales, it’s pretty straight-forward. I’m sure Coldplay or some other stadium band will take this title again for the month after their next album is released…
    It’s all about numbers, people!!!

  16. Jared  |   Posted on Jan 13th, 2007

omfg are you ppl stupid? RHCP are cool, but they’re not even close to some bands in record sales. obviously most popular would be record sales. Forget NY Post. how many of you participated in that poll..yeah that’s what i thought. they are number 24
in record sales for 2006. even fall out boy sold more than they did just by their oldest album in 2006….Face it RHCP is not the most popular band.they even got beat out by carrie underwood….ha wtf/e

  17. Sean  |   Posted on Feb 20th, 2007

actually record sales dont show the most popular? ever heard of lime wire? or napster? kazaa? yea, illeagle downloading of songs. that does NOT show in record sales retard.

  18. riho  |   Posted on Aug 23rd, 2007

dude i thought it will be Metallica :)

  19. Dave  |   Posted on Jan 31st, 2008

Well it depends on what you mean by popularity. If you are asking who has the most DIE HARD fans…then this would be Metallica easily. Tehy have MILLIONS of fans that eat breathe sleep metallica. But if you mean by casual fans then maybe a band like U2 or Zeppelin.

dude Linkin Park Beats al the previously stated bands so FUCK OFF!!! btw RHCP sucks….just throwing that out there…….

  24. Many bands beat the RHCP, The Beatles probably are the most popular band. Why?
    1) They are #1 on Last FM charts
    2) Have highest record sales of anyone
    3) the album “1″ released in 2000 was the best selling album in the 2000′s
    4) There is also diehard Beatles fans too, both guys and girls.
