Not gonna lie, I like this a lot, but then again, Born to Run is one of my all time favorite albums. Jesus, they’ve got that whole break down with the glockenspiel and everything.
It’s not bad, but it is so Springsteen! Although that’s never a problem for me. I’d rather hear rip-offs of older artists than some of the bland indie rock that gets pushed as great these days. When is someone going to rip-off Dolly Parton?
i think its a pretty solid track…sure, they’re trying too hard and it’s a bit over-the-top, but as Balumpus said, “their last album was [hardly] the model of restraint”. What do you expect, they are from Vegas afterall.
I have to agree it is pretty interesting but I can’t say that I like it… not yet at least. The song seems to send out a positive vibe, which may take time getting used to. I sorta feel I like them more when they were singing about murdered teenage girls and about being insanely jealous and paranoid. My plea: get back on the dark side.
I definately hear the Boss’s influence, I’m not wild about it, but it definately has my attention. It is a little over-the-top, but I kinda like that aspect of the band.
If it’s supposed to be one of the best of the past two decades, shouldn’t it develop a bit from Hot Fuss?
I don’t mind the song, and I don’t mind Hot Fuss, but that certainly wasn’t one of the best of the last 20 years, and this doesn’t seem like much of a step up.
Meatloaf is right. It’s not so much Springsteen, but Springsteen through a Steinman filter – all bluster, no nuance. But Steinman had more interesting melodies, better lyrics, and a singer who could actually convey an emotion or two.
The biggest problem is the vocal delivery. Flowers has all the emotional range of Gary Numan, which is a pretty bad trait to have if you want to pull off a supposedly heartfelt anthem.
Unless the other songs on the album are amazing, it’s certainly not going to be one of the best albums of the last 20 years judging from this song, but I think the song is good. What I hate most about it is his voice. Never been the hugest fan of his voice in the first place, but he sounds really bad on this song. How high was he when this was recorded? Definitaly some springsteen in there(not a bad thing). One thing I like is how it seems to have no chorus, yet it’s still catchy, and the somg arrangment is a little different from the average. I don’t like it as much as Mr. Brightside or Somebody Told Me, but it’s good enough. What’s up with the lyrics though, maybe I’m just slow but they make no sense, then again this is the Killers.
After hearing 3 minutes and 39 seconds, I am ready to pass judgement on the entire album … and declare it the best record of the last FIFTY years! The only that could it make it better is if they actually did hire Jim Steinman, Read Em And Weep-stizz!!!
All you music snobs need to take your heads out of your asses, stop wearing low-rise jeans and xxs t-shirts and recognize real art when it arrives. I hate you all.
I am real sorry but this is digusting Springsteen might be happy for the nod i.e back catalogue sales but that would be all he can smile about…
Flowers knew f’ all about Springsteen until the 25th Anniversary thing came out and he has just f’n swiped it bad lyrics in all “were riding down the skyline on a hurricane”… He said he knew Born In The USA and Glory Days but that was it…
The come down before the middle 8 is just stolen from born to run. His voice cant carry the heavyweight songs – just very poor…
The story of the song is actually based on Thunder Road but musically it is arranged like Born To Run – so poor so poor
I said “shit sandwich” in the first Killers post, but in fairness I can understand why they would make stuff like this. All they have to do is not take risks now and they’ll sell tons of albums. Gotta love the record biz!
By the way, if anyone wants to hear a GREAT and new Springsteen influenced song check out Lucero’s new one “I Can Get Us Out of Here Tonight”…http://tinyurl.com/pxufj
To the person who said he wished the lyrics were darker… i dont know about you, and i could be wrong, but i interpret the song as being about the devil. anyway, that’s my interpretation. particularly the “he doesnt look a thing like jesus” bit.
also, didn’t coldplay say they ripped off the riff for talk from kraftwerk?
I’m kinda young, so I never really got into Bruce Springsteen, so I dont know if it’s a ripoff or not, but I like Interpol and they ripped of Joy Division and dont admit it. At least the Killers admitted to the inspiration. If it is a Springsteen rip off, i can only imagine they did him justice since “when you were young” is great and i’ve listened to it about 10 times in a row now.
And you know, they did take a huge risk. Maybe non-fans don’t notice, but this sounds nothing like Hot Fuss at all. A lot of fans are actually kind of pissed, and a good bit of them don’t like it. Losing a chunk of your fanbase because you matured as a band is typically a sign of taking a risk. And whoever said this sounds like “Talk” is out of their mind.
Haha, the second I heard that riff I instantly thought of Coldplay’s “Talk.”
Anyway, it’s a good pop song. They’re a fun pop band. That’s about the extent of it. But they certainly haven’t done anything new or shaped the sound of music for years to come. I’m still waiting on Smashing Pumpkins “Mellon Collie…” to be beat. Tick tock, tick tock.
This is an instant classic…tomorrow’s classic rock today. And yeah, the Springsteen influences are heavy and great. I’ve listened to this song about 20 times already…and can’t stop
I tell you what…..the Cars meets the Boss with some balls.
Great hook, good changes and excellent vocals.. the guy can sing.
Who gives a shit who it sounds like…Led Zep sounded like Robert Johnson….How did that work out???….as far as OVER THE TOP this is a ROCK BAND from Vegas we are talking about right??? ….what do you want them to do sing soft mello drama dark bullshit for Starbucks….At least this song can be played in a bar on a Friday night and it will get peoples attention and not put them to sleep.
To me that is what this band is all about and based on this track it sounds like they want to remain loud and YOUNG!
That is fucking terrible, and I actually enjoyed some of Hot Fuss. I guess I commend them for taking a risk and not relying on the formula of the last album. Wait, no actually I don’t.
Well, I wasn’t really blown away by it at first, but it has gotten progressively better with each listen. Yes, it does sound an awful lot like Springsteen meets Meat Loaf meets Billy Joel but, y’know what, if you’re of a certain age (30 plus), everything sounds like something these days – there’s just no getting around it. At least The Killers do it with a bit of a “nod, nod, wink, wink” style as opposed to garbage like The Arcade Fire and She Wants Revenge.
Wow i really love this song, i mean the last album was great but probably the best song on that album “was under the gun” which was left on the cutting room floor only to be put on the extended, special version, i highly recommend hearing that song though, but i love the feel good lyrics that have a driven corous which really can make you quote on quote feel happy, springsteen was a great, and brandon is very cocky but i hope its as good as he says it is
Better things to do then cut up others ..when I dont even play an intrument or sing myself…so off I go to listen to more music …that I’m an expert on…to others who listen to music..enjoy it all…and enjoy the Killers
It’s such a crying shame that you people only like bands that no one knows about. If the killers were not the big deal they are today you’d be all over them and this single.
Ah so many haters! But guess what? So many lovers too. Hot Fuss is still at number 37 in the UK album charts 2 years after its release. That can only mean two things. 1. there are thousands of people out there who are buying a copy every week just to keep it alive or 2. more people are listening to the new stuff, getting into The Killers for the first time and wanting the first album.
All these posts about waiting for the album to flop – it’s just not going to happen is it? I mean come on, like tem or not, The Killers are a very popular band.
The new song is just brilliant. The lyrics, the vocals, the arrangement everything. And as for it being too risky and over the top, wake up. The Killers are not a shitty Indie band. They are a Rock band. From Vegas.
KAY WTFFFF
last album i LOVED,I thought it was awesome.
So I spent forever; and
a half awaiting..THIS?!I don’t think so.
So far, my high hopes
for this upcoming album are pretty much shot.
Let’s hope this song doesn’t represent what
the rest of the album will sound like.
This song is fun for Bruce nostalgia reasons only. I think it’s funny that Brandon tried so hard to sound like a Brittish 80′s New Waver on the last record and now he’s opted for 80′s Americana pop. Will Brandon Flowers ever find a voice of his own?
Anyhow, I think NME hit the nail on the head when they declared “Hot Fuss” the “best half album of the year”. The Killers are great at making a few catchy songs, but they don’t have it in them to make the “greatest record of the last twenty years”. I suspect the new album will be the same thing: Front load the record with all the singles and filler for the last half.
I’ve been a Killers fan from the start, they’re my favorite band, and I love love LOVE this song, I cannot WAIT for the album to come out. It’s brilliant.
The killers are the ownage. This song spanks just as hard as Mr. Brightside. Indie is a god-send, Gogo killers… gratz to one of the best bands around. And yea is that you alex? Its jo lol .
Respect Brandon Flowers for being a beast and having the best voice ever. I bet you are just all jelous =D
There’s quite a simple answer to everyone who doesn’t like The Killers: don’t buy the fucking record. No ones forcing you. I’m sure they’ll do just fine without your support.
Woah, are you all deaf?? this one blew me away -made my day! -his vocals add a lot to the atmosphere
sounds more like the big u2 of the early days meets the cure (still) than bruce… the riff has indeed alot in common with Talk but didn’t coldplay rip it from Kraftwerk? But basically this song is stunning and now I have suddenly high expectations for their album…
I can’t stop listening to this song. To all the snobs who are putting the song down for being over the top – you guys are missing the point. And his voice is perfect, over the top fits just right here.
heya
For the first 30 seconds of the song when i first heard it on Radio 1 at the train station i was unsure about it but from then on it has just grown and grown on me and i now LOVE it so people need to give it time. Its hard for them to create a new song and for everyone to connect with it straight away and love it.
People are going to have to realise how hard it is for their new album,’some sounds’, to follow on from ‘Hot Fuss’ as for many people the album was amazing and therefore their expectations for their new album will be too high, even if it is as good as most average albums nowadays people will slate it for not being as good as their first album and the second album can sometimes be the hardest to get right if their first is a huge success.
The Killers needed to try and create a slightly new sound but at the same time have it recognisable as ‘The Killers’ when people heard it so the public should recognise this and try to like the change, they couldnt exactly have made an album that sounded exactly the same as the first.
People, respect the fact that ‘The Killers’ have made an album that they like and that will entertain the pulic and they do not care what the critics think about it.
Somepeople have made comments about how the last album wasn’t the best because there was a range of quality of songs on the album but most of the songs were great and how many albums can people actually name with more than 10 songs on all of which being great, well publicised songs?
Following on from those comments people have said how they believe ‘The Killers’ are ‘Good’ but not capable of making the best album of the last 20 years so they are not ‘Great’. However, apparently then if this claim is true then their can only be one ‘Great’ band for them of the last 20 years and 3 ‘Great’ bands in the last 60 years and sorry but if you only listen to these 3 bands then your album must be very dull. My ipod has about 2,500 songs on and out of them the killers’ section is still my favourite.
Finally, IF YOU DON’T LIKE IT THEN DON’T BUY IT OR LISTEN TO IT. NOBODY CAN MAKE YOU BUY IT OR LISTEN TO IT SO DON’T AND IF THE ALBUM IS ONLY AVERAGE-GOOD DON’T BE CRITICAL THAT IT IS NOT AS GOOD AS THE FIRST, BE THANKFUL THAT IT IS AS GOOD AS IT IS AND THAT THEIR IS A SECOND ALBUM TO LISTEN TO.
How the hell are they “trying too hard”? What? are you fucking stupid? They manage to make this track catchy without having all the complicated layering BS that it takes a song to make it now a days. Trying too hard? Of course they need to try hard, their last album was a chart topper.
i’m not sure what the album’s going to be like, and i almost never listen to Hot Fuss, though it is, without a doubt, the greatest album title of all time. but ten seconds after this song came on the radio, in the car, with no introduction, i was hooked. 3:38 later, the sound was so loud the car was shaking, and I was sweating. begging them to tell me who it was. imagine my surprise when it was the boys from vegas.
this is awesome if you like horrible vocals. to be technical there’s way to much vibrato and he goes off-key in a few spots. The problem with this song is that that riff is extremely catchy, so even though i dislike it, it’ll probly be in my head for a while now. time to listen to some real music to get it out
This song is really good. I was going to write “actually” in front of really good, but the Killers have a lot of really good songs. Of course Mr. Flowers is gonna get some harshness for the “best album of the last 20 years comment” but only because it’s easy to make fun of stuff like that…
I know there’s a lot of ways to make fun of the killers, but i believe that, just like weezer or the smashing pumpkins, people will be psyched to hear this on a jukebox in 5-10 years.
I know I will…
fact: his voice isn’t the best. but the song is really catchy, and it IS a great and well-produced song! Maybe even better than the hits “Mr. Brightside” or “Smile Like You Mean It”. But YES, his voice isn’t that good….especially when he sings withoutthe rest of the band….
d you guys ever listen U2??
you should…coz back before U2 was not a hit sensational, Bono was not so much hot vocals like he is now…
two thumbs up for the killers,
why?
coz’ they have guts to make music sounds different than the others…
I hated it at first, I thought the Killers let me down. Now it find it really catchy and I’m really loving it. Brandon’s not the strongest singer but it is what it is. Catchy pop. Alot of artists out there cant sing very well. The Killers aren’t trying to be Springsteen, although I can hear the influence. Do people hate Springsteen because he’s a Bob Dylan rip-off? I like it.
I Love it! And i hate it! bc i hate the killers, but this song is so goddamn good, goddamn its good. Not the greatest song ever dont get me wrong, but its so dramatic and everything. Hard to explain, but i can’t get enough of this song, which says alot considering i hated Hott Fuss with a mutha fucking passion, i got off on how much i hated it. Now im liking this im starting to quesition everything…
I’m a hesitant Killers listener. Not a fan, but I liked certain things about Hot Fuss, so this was an anticipated release for me. After listening to it I can’t help but feel the strong Springsteen influence. Once you heard “We’re burning down the highway skyline/On the back of a hurricane/that started turning/When you were young” There was no doubt that this was a Boss nod. After a few more listens, I think that its almost a Thunder Road tribute to the power and force of Born to Run. Flowers voice does leave things to be desired, but I think its better than anything to be found on Hot Fuss. Less rediculous, a more developed sound.
i was so-so on the song on the first few listens and now i can’t get this song out of my head. the more i listen to it, the more curious i become of what it’s actually about ‘coz we all have different interpretations of it, right? while i do agree with those who say that brandon’s vocals here could use an improvement, but isn’t that probably ‘coz his voice was not as altered as it was on hot fuss (and add to that the faux english accent)?
Not gonna lie, I like this a lot, but then again, Born to Run is one of my all time favorite albums. Jesus, they’ve got that whole break down with the glockenspiel and everything.
i dont think its the greatest thing ever like ultragrrrl does, but it is interesting.
jesus this sounds bad. i think they’re trying way too hard. wait, like their last album was the model of restraint.
i guess next they’re going to remake born in the usa?
It’s not bad, but it is so Springsteen! Although that’s never a problem for me. I’d rather hear rip-offs of older artists than some of the bland indie rock that gets pushed as great these days. When is someone going to rip-off Dolly Parton?
White Stripes did rip off Dolly : “Jolene”
what the fuck?
these guys said they were making the best album in years or some kind of shit, right?
i declare this the second coming of SUCK!
all hail the glorious suckatude of it all!
bask in the suckiness that is Brandon “i dress gay to pick up chicks” Flowers!
(i think you get the idea that i may not like this, and you would be right)
i think its a pretty solid track…sure, they’re trying too hard and it’s a bit over-the-top, but as Balumpus said, “their last album was [hardly] the model of restraint”. What do you expect, they are from Vegas afterall.
that riff is kind of a rip off of “talk” by coldplay.
I’d probably like it if I Didn’t hate his voice.
I definately hear the Boss’s influence, I’m not wild about it, but it definately has my attention. It is a little over-the-top, but I kinda like that aspect of the band.
If it’s supposed to be one of the best of the past two decades, shouldn’t it develop a bit from Hot Fuss?
I don’t mind the song, and I don’t mind Hot Fuss, but that certainly wasn’t one of the best of the last 20 years, and this doesn’t seem like much of a step up.
it reminds me of the cars actually. his voice more then anything at times, trainwreck of a song though.
Is it just be or does this song sound exactly the same the whole way through? like, I don’t know if I even distinguished a chorus from a verse.
maybe i just wasn’t paying attention…
Shit Sandwich!
So does this sound more like Meatloaf or Sparks?
Meatloaf is right. It’s not so much Springsteen, but Springsteen through a Steinman filter – all bluster, no nuance. But Steinman had more interesting melodies, better lyrics, and a singer who could actually convey an emotion or two.
The biggest problem is the vocal delivery. Flowers has all the emotional range of Gary Numan, which is a pretty bad trait to have if you want to pull off a supposedly heartfelt anthem.

BUTCH CASSIDY
Is Tim Burton going to direct the video?
links not working for anyone else?
sounds like suede to me, apart from this has awful stale singing jizzed all over it like the glass at a peep show.
minsk, if you ask me.
>i dont think its the greatest thing ever like ultragrrrl does, but it is interesting.
duh. she works for their label.
I said “shit sandwich” in the first Killers post, but in fairness I can understand why they would make stuff like this. All they have to do is not take risks now and they’ll sell tons of albums. Gotta love the record biz!

This is junk. The Killers will be the next Remy Zero instead of the next great New Romantic rip-off band that they were destined to be.
Clip was better than full song.

We totally need an Mp3 for this!
Please!
It’s awesome.
(but maybe I’m biased because I’m a die hard Killers fan.)
This isn’t bad, but Flowers’ voice on here is awful. It sounds like he’s dying, and whining as much as possible is his only chance at survival..
Haha, the second I heard that riff I instantly thought of Coldplay’s “Talk.”

It sounds alright, kinda like a mix of 80′s pop with Conor Oberst singing. I have to hear the album before passing judgement though.
It’s such a crying shame that you people only like bands that no one knows about. If the killers were not the big deal they are today you’d be all over them and this single.
as a former mormon i totally identify with his music and his mindset. loved it.
I love driving to this song… burnin’ down the highway…
If the rest of the album is as good as this song, it will beat Hot Fuss in the sales department, I guarantee it.
Bit like Billy Joel, we didnt start the fire…decent
there are some crazy guys in here!!!
this is gonna be the best thing ever!!!
They say the devil’s water, it ain’t so sweet
You don’t have to drink right now!
Like I mentioned in my post… facial hair is so in right now.
bleh…. I had much higher expectations for this… I’m a lil bummed. bounce to my electro synth mixes instead!
I LOVE THIS SONG!!
everyone needs to stop being so critical and just enjoy the freaking song!
Vocal sounds so much like Ryan Adams, it’s insane…especially the “watch it now, here he come!”
All in all it’s a great song, plain and simple. Not the 180 from Hot Fuss I was expecting, but different enough.
The last time through the chorus is amazing with the different chords being emphasized.
Great defiant and desperate feel…very uplifting at the same time. Classic song, hopefully.
I love it. i love that it’s different. i love his vocals. can’t wait for the album.
Thank you!

well i think its awesome
I like the song.
I think the killers are more concerned with entertaining than appeasing all the art fag music critics in the world.
I don’t mind the Killers, every once AND a while.
Thank you if you have read all of this.
ALEX
How the hell are they “trying too hard”? What? are you fucking stupid? They manage to make this track catchy without having all the complicated layering BS that it takes a song to make it now a days. Trying too hard? Of course they need to try hard, their last album was a chart topper.
Listen to joannita and alex, they know their stuff. Killers own you. This song is fucking awesome, as will be Sams town.
i think this is cool, how can you say this is bad? well constructed and well delievered. by the way brandon is a legend.
SEAMUS IS A CUNT

SEAMUS IS A CUNT
listen to the music without pretentious preconceptions.
i’m not sure what the album’s going to be like, and i almost never listen to Hot Fuss, though it is, without a doubt, the greatest album title of all time. but ten seconds after this song came on the radio, in the car, with no introduction, i was hooked. 3:38 later, the sound was so loud the car was shaking, and I was sweating. begging them to tell me who it was. imagine my surprise when it was the boys from vegas.
come on. this is a fucking fantastic song.
this is awesome if you like horrible vocals. to be technical there’s way to much vibrato and he goes off-key in a few spots. The problem with this song is that that riff is extremely catchy, so even though i dislike it, it’ll probly be in my head for a while now. time to listen to some real music to get it out
YOU’RE ALL (except for the ones who like the song) A BUNCH of PATHETIC FAGS!
the killers rule! and BTW FUCK WHITE STRIPES…
KISSSSSs
This song is really good. I was going to write “actually” in front of really good, but the Killers have a lot of really good songs. Of course Mr. Flowers is gonna get some harshness for the “best album of the last 20 years comment” but only because it’s easy to make fun of stuff like that…
I know there’s a lot of ways to make fun of the killers, but i believe that, just like weezer or the smashing pumpkins, people will be psyched to hear this on a jukebox in 5-10 years.
I know I will…
this sounds like meatloaf!
Oh my God, Joseph, you just nailed it.
I just tested it on my aunt, who’d never heard of the Killers before. She said “At first I thought Bruce, but then I thought Meatloaf.”
fact: his voice isn’t the best. but the song is really catchy, and it IS a great and well-produced song!
I like it a lot
Not their best song and i know their album wont be as good as first. But that doesn’t mean it wont be a good album.
I can see them losing hype with this new direction but who cares? They will have a longer career cos of it and gain more respect.
Sometimes i think ppl are happy for bands to keep churning out the same old dross like Oasis and Coldplay.
Jon: “that riff is kind of a rip off of “talk” by coldplay”
Just like “talk” is a rip off of “computerlove” by kraftwerk.
Check the X&Y album credits.
Now im liking this im starting to quesition everything…
btw i love his voice in this song, soooo much better than in Hott Fuss, main reason why i didnt like it…
I’m a hesitant Killers listener. Less rediculous, a more developed sound.
i think it’s good so fuck you all!!!!!!!
WANKERSSSSSSSSSSS!!
HAHAHAHAHAH!!

i was so-so on the song on the first few listens and now i can’t get this song out of my head. the more i listen to it, the more curious i become of what it’s actually about ‘coz we all have different interpretations of it, right? while i do agree with those who say that brandon’s vocals here could use an improvement, but isn’t that probably ‘coz his voice was not as altered as it was on hot fuss (and add to that the faux english accent)?
i really didn’t like it at first. but i wonder if it’s growing on me.
