NY Doll David Johansen talks to Blender about the city’s glory days:

There used to be so many joints where you could go in and sit and have these incredible conversations with people and there was no wondering who you were or who they were. They seem to be few and far between now. Now people talk about, “Oh I know this great dive bar” and you check it out and it’s just full of these guys who, like, play lacrosse.

I’m not a huge glam rock fan, but I liked that NY Dolls episode of MTV’s True Life where the kid bursts into tears at Trash & Vaudeville.

The seminal rockers release One Day It Will Please Us To Remember Even This next week. Michael Stipe, Iggy Pop, and Bo Diddley make guest appearances. If you preorder the CD here, it’ll arrive autographed by the band.

    Dancing On The Lip Of A Volacano with Michael Snipe on back-up vocals is very good. The DVD All Dolled Up is excellent as well.

    the song really misses the guitar skronk/slop of Thunders and the solo is weak and bar-band predictable.
    on the other hand, johansen sounds great. the “band” is scheduled to be on conan on thursday.

    Meh. It’s not bad, but it tries to combine too many concepts together, and it ends up as generic rock mixed with 12-bar blues.

    a) There’s nothing wrong in liking NYD, they’re one of the bands that fucking started any strain of indie rock you may be into now. American punk/indie subculture would be non-existant without this band having come along, and to just pass them off in the curt phrase “I’m not a huge glam-rock fan” is appalling. They started the NYC scene, which started punk (and post), which started indie subculture, which started Sufjan Stevens, which started stereogum. Or whatever, keep listening to NPR rock.

    b) DudeAsinCool, the documentary “New York Doll” is indeed both great and hugely depressing. Worth seeing for fans.
