The annual Mercury Music Prize nods have been announced (here’s last year’s crop). The only thing we can guarantee is that we’ll forget who ends up winning, and that Lily Allen hates all the nominees.

As always, William Hill gives us the odds:

5:1 Arctic Monkeys – Whatever People Say I Am That’s What I”m Not
5:1 Thom Yorke – The Eraser
6:1 Muse – Black Holes And Revelations
6:1 Guillemots – Through The Windowpane
6:1 Editors – The Back Room
8:1 Richard Hawley – Coles Corner
8:1 Sway – This Is My Demo
8:1 Hot Chip – The Warning
10:1 Lou Rhodes – Beloved One
10:1 Scritti Politti – White Bread Black Beer
10:1 Zoe Rahman – Melting Pot
10:1 Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan – Ballad Of The Broken Seas

  1. This isn’t a very exciting pool of artists. Richard Hawley or Hot chip are the most deserving, I say.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they give it to Arctic Monkeys. Though I’d rather see Hot Chip, the Editors or Isobel get it. I would be shocked if they gave it to Thom Yorke or Muse.

Often the seemingly most unlikely to win bands actually do win so who knows.

  4. ya, great to see richard hawley and guillemots on there. a bit surprised to see editors on there, though i do like them. didn’t think they merited the requisite critical praise though… what about ‘the rakes’?

Bad pool of artists. I like Hot Chip and Isobel, but those weren’t even that great of albums. All the others suck and the Arctic Monkeys will win :P

Go Isobel! Not my favorite album, but it’s the best one on the list.

who still listens to albums? really?
i just don’t have the time anymore, as i’m too busy posting hipster interweb nodules.
    Alright? Still?

I haven’t heard any of these albums, but I know already that they all suck. So there.

Wow you lot are narrow minded littl’uns, aren’t you?

No time for albums? Just leave the world of music now. Seriously.

‘I haven’t heard any of these albums, but I know already that they all suck. So there.’ Same goes to you.

I may not post here much, but now I know why. Narrow minded bunch of sods.

As for the bad pool comments, it’s at least 27.7x better than last year’s. I mean, HARD FI, and Anthony etc.

    Guillemots all the way.

  10. I’m rooting for Editors or Thom Yorke seeing as both albums are fantastic. Can’t say I know enough about any of the other artists (except Muse) to make a proper assessment of their musical capacity or deservingness of an award. Or, well…Editors rule. That’s it.

The Guiilemots album is good in patches and The Arctic Monkeys album is clearly excellent yet neither will win.
It’ll be either Hot Chip or Isobel as these genre has been neglected for a few years now.
The last two years we had the skinny inde boys (Franz Ferninand) and the troubled gendre bendery of Anthony and the Johnstons.
    Thats how it works……….
