If you visited Stereogum on Thursday night/Friday morning, you saw this:

Kids, I wrote that. The intention wasn’t to punk the blogosphere — what hacker correctly uses ‘whom’ and posts a Bob Dylan MP3? — but to amuse you while we were pwned. I see how it would appear a hacker wrote it. Sorry for the confusion. (Well, not that sorry. Gawker love‘s hard to find if you’re not Crazy ‘Us Weekly’ Guy™.)

The truth is our server was “compromised.” Whatever the fuck that means. That’s what our hosting company said. Almost certainly the work of a bot leeching on our RAM. Or the person sending nasty missives from Firecrotch’s CrackBerry. Or someone who hates indie rock a cappella. Huge thanks to StereoJim for getting us back up. Thank him if you see him. He lives in Brooklyn.

While we’re TKOB …

1. If you ordered a Stereogum t-shirt and haven’t received it yet, I promise you will get it soon. I’m really sorry about the delay. We ran out of some sizes and inventory arrival took longer than expected. We’re almost all sold of out black. What color do you want next?

2. ATTN Advertisers! We’ve parted ways with our friends at IndieClick (“just friends” now) and are serving banners in-house (you probably noticed the nifty new 300×250 too). If you wanna talk rates e-mail ads at stereogum dot com.

3. Publicists, label peeps, MySpace cadets who sent us links … please bear with us. We know we’ve got some catch-up to play on the content side.

Finally, here’s your reward for sticking it out. The world premiere of the first cut from Yo La Tengo’s thoroughly awesome I’m Not Afraid Of You And I Will Beat Your Ass (9/12).

It’s the legit version, no early fade out!

[Permanent link backup, Matador's server was down for a bit.]

Ira, Georgia and James hit the Landmark Loew’s Jersey Theatre (!) on 9/29. Tickets on sale Monday at noon.

Did you really think I’d pick SUFJAN as a password? C’mon people!

  2. I couldn’t agree more with the person above. While I might have just started a new blog – yours will still be one of the best!!

  3. Welcome back!

  4. Welcome back, Scott, we missed the daily ‘gum.

  5. I probably checked stereogum forty times in the last three days waiting for this site to be back.

  6. I demand a “Perhaps SUFJAN was a poor password” tshirt.

  7. erik  |   Posted on Jul 22nd, 2006

i missed you and this site

i’d buy a perhaps sufjan was a poor password tshirt in a second

  8. gotta test the comments to see if my anti-spam fix killed ‘em or not…

  9. Good to see you back!

  10. *removes hose from tail pipe*

  11. thank God .. I went through the worst case of ‘Gum withdrawl, ever!

but hey, alright .. full length YLT song!
    2 down, 13 to go!

  12. definitely  |   Posted on Jul 22nd, 2006

definitely would buy a Sufjan/Password shirt.

  13. I’ll third-or-so on that Sufjan/password shirt. Glad you’re back.

  14. margo  |   Posted on Jul 22nd, 2006

i also require a sufjan/password shirt. to the printers with you!

  15. Lovely that you’re back…not having my daily ‘Gum intake was killing me. Seriously, my liver was going through withdrawls.

Glad the site’s back to normal…and infinite thanks for the new track. The beginning reminded me of “Steady As She Goes” quite a lot but that burning fear was cooled as I listened to the rest of the song…lovely. :D

If I knew how to hack, I would use “whom” correctly.

However, I am far too consumed with grammatical correctness to bother trying to learn to hack.

Lots of hacking this past week, though. Another site I visit occasionally was hacked by some “Belgian sniper.”

    I’d love a Sufjan-password t-shirt as well

  17. Glad to see the site up and running!

  18. good to see you back!!

  19. Alec  |   Posted on Jul 23rd, 2006

    sufjan tees all around

  20. Don’t get it. How in the hell could you think a hacker put that little dialogue up? How could one miss the stereogummy humor?

I for thought it was one of your funniest posts ever. I laughed out loud. Hard.

Good to have you back. Sufjan tee = great idea.

  21. Evan  |   Posted on Jul 23rd, 2006

A real password wouldn’t give your password out for rival hackers to use either.

  22. Evan  |   Posted on Jul 23rd, 2006

    A real hacker, rather.

  23. david  |   Posted on Jul 23rd, 2006

my life will no longer be complete without a sufjan password shirt.

  24. peter  |   Posted on Jul 23rd, 2006

I could probably go on living without a sufjan password t-shirt, but it wouldn’t be the same

  25. want some sufjan/password pins?

i’d love to make fun of everyone who seemed to be seriously saddened by the temporary loss of stereogum, but honestly i was checking in just as much as the next guy. hell we were even talking about it on the way back from my band’s show in philly tonight. that’s love.

  26. alex  |   Posted on Jul 23rd, 2006

    NERDS

  27. >>you probably noticed the nifty new 300×250 too

holy GOD! that thing is humungous. I’m tolerant of ads, but GOLLY. That sorta commerce is clogging up my tubes.

  28. oh what a f’cjing idiot I be. I had set my monitor to 800×600 to watch on my television set. OF COURSE everything appears outtawack.

    carry on. carry on.

  29. That ad is huge. And flashy. One more reason to never read all the comments.

  30. really missed your blog. i couldn’t leave the house not knowing what hip concerts to go to. seriously i got so bored I considered last fm and looking at myspace’s top indie artists (yet another reason to hate my name, Mo- it’s in the word emo)

I don’t hate you for joking with us; please don’t hate me for liking soul asylum (my password is pirner)

    SUFJAN was really your password!?

  35. I’d take a Sufjan-password shirt. And some more YLT.

  36. I missed Stereogum soooo much

  37. I never realized how much I’d miss you until you were gone for awhile… Glad you’re back.

  38. Dave  |   Posted on Jul 23rd, 2006

  39. the new password is VanGaalen.

  40. Blair  |   Posted on Jul 23rd, 2006

I never realized how much I love Stereogum until the site was down for a few days. I was having serious withdrawls. Glad you’re back!

  46. still testing comments…just want to make sure spam comments get harder to make.

  47. tyrome  |   Posted on Jul 23rd, 2006

haha, bullshit that scott posted that. He got hacked and his only excuse is that he put it up himself? If that’s so, then why change it the next day to ‘This site is being fixed’ or whatever it said. he’s just a poor guy with no site security and no good excuses

  48. tyrome, the reason it was changed is because everyone mistook it for real, including the hosting company, who freaked out.

  49. I never thought the message was a hacker…a hacker wouldn’t be as funny. I LOL’d, anyway.
:D Again, glad the site’s back up.

  50. Amanda  |   Posted on Jul 23rd, 2006

I truly and deeply missed Stereogum. Where else am I going to get my indie-yuppie updates in small town Indiana?
    Yeah, that’s right. Nowhere.

And the Sufjan/password shirt… coolest thing ever. I would so wear it around town, even though no one else knows who Sufjan is.

  51. i’d buy the shirt if it said “5ufjan is my new password”

  52. When is the podcast coming back up? I am WAY too lazy to keep downloading manually….

  53. beetlebum  |   Posted on Jul 23rd, 2006

    next time pick noe<3liam

  54. I missed this blog horribly! Yay for you being back!

  55. Memememe  |   Posted on Jul 23rd, 2006

Yo La Tengo link no workie? I got a 404.

  56. Here’s another vote for the SUFJAN shirt!

  57. YES on a sufjan shirt.

NO on the Yo La Tengo link. wha…? why? why?

  58. weformedaband  |   Posted on Jul 24th, 2006

Hey I am in a band. where is a good place to get t-shirts made???

  59. Anyone noticed how long Myspace has been buggin also?
I doubt a connection, but I’ve been bored, so I had to drink a lot.

  60. Lisa  |   Posted on Jul 24th, 2006

Well glad your back and I think everyone agrees//needs a Sufjan/password shirt.

  61. hook that shirt up, b!

  63. booboo  |   Posted on Jul 24th, 2006

what is that “Cluck You” image made out of? It is so puzzling to me. That part threw me off. :\

Garden gnomes. From that one episode of Lost.

  66. booboo  |   Posted on Jul 24th, 2006

    ah! ok. thanks.

  67. tyrome  |   Posted on Jul 24th, 2006

Hosting companies generally dont view their clients websites all that often, JIM

  68. you think hackers know how to use “whom” correctly? aren’t these the same people who brought us the typo “pwnd?”

  69. Tyrome, I guess you’re right. Even when those sites are big customers whose servers are compromised and they’re involved in bringing it back to life. Why check the site? I’m sorry I ever doubted you. I hope I haven’t distracted you from whatever masterpiece you were working on.

  70. Tyrome  |   Posted on Jul 25th, 2006

Jim dude, they dont just go randomly around looking at the main index html files of all their clients. If there was something wrong with your site, they have a million other ways to tell, not by just looking at your html page.

And why would your hosting company “freak out”? YOU’RE the one losing service, they’re there to help when it happens, not to ‘freak out’ even more than their customer. Jeez.
