Thirty-second clips of every song on Bob Dylan’s Modern Times leaked last week. A single MP3 of the snippets can be found

, in case you missed the link while we were under construction.

You may have read that on one tune, ol’ Bob gives a bizarre shoutout to R&B songbird Alicia Keys.

“I was thinking about Alicia Keys, couldn’t help from crying/When she was born in Hell’s Kitchen, I was living down the line/I’m wondering where in the world Alicia Keys could be/I been looking for her even clean through Tennessee.”

Early reports indicated the lyric would appear on the title track. But Times has no title track. So I was dubious.

Well, the MP3 (sort of) confirms it. Assuming the samples are correctly sequenced, the song’s actually called “Thunder On The Mountain.” Hurrah! It’s Dylan’s weirdest move since those Victoria’s Secret commercials.

I always thought it would be fun (in a terribly dorky High Fidelity way) to make a mix on which each song references the artist who performs the subsequent song. Hey, I said it was dorky! But I was so sure it would get published in whatever magazine printed reader mixes. (Was it CMJ?)

Anyway, never did make that mix. The flow would be horrendous. And I would inevitably hit a wall…

Terrorvision – “Tom Petty Loves Veruca Salt”
Veruca Salt – “David Bowie”
David Bowie – “Song For Bob Dylan”
Bob Dylan – “Last Thoughts on Woody Guthrie”

… so just tell us your favorite rock ‘n roll shoutouts (can be in a lyric, a la “Thunder On The Mountain,” not necessarily the song title) and collectively we’ll make the most clever, worst mix of all time.

  12. The Replacements – “Alex Chilton”
How am I the first person to mention this one??

Also, “Range Life” is as far from a shoutout as you can get. It’s more of a fuckyou.

  13. “I really don’t want to be John Lennon or Leonard Cohen” — Rufus Wainwright in “Want”

“Sick of muthafuckas trying to tell me that they’re down with Prince” — Hot Chip in “Down With Prince”

“Singing a little Dylan, sitting on a fence…” Hooty & the Blowfish in “I Only Want To Be With You” (wish I hadn’t thought of this one)

“Lying in bed, just like Brian Wilson did” — Barenaked Ladies in “Brian Wilson”

“Bob Marley, poet and a prophet” — RHCP in “Give It Away”

“In a dream I had, I was on a stage with Queen, Michael Stipe and Elton John, Bono, Springsteen” — Live in “People Like You” (from the seldom-heard album V)

And if this wasn’t a “rock n’ roll” shotout list, I’d offer pretty much every hip hop song ever recorded.

  16. What about references to other songs? From the Pet Shop Boys – I Want to Wake Up:

I stood at the kitchen sink, my radio played
songs like ‘Tainted Love’ and ‘Love Is Strange’
As I listened and the words hit my ears
    I cried sudden tears

Now, I want to wake up
How I want to wake up

  17. Mike  |   Posted on Jul 25th, 2006

Dylan must be into the shout outs. Time Out Of Mind had this lyric… “I’m listening to Neil Young/Gotta turn him up”

McCartney also sang “What’s the man moving cross the stage?/Looks a lot like the one used by Jimmy Page” on Rock Show.

And…didn’t Neil Young mention Jimmy Page too on Mirrorball?

  34. chucko  |   Posted on Jul 25th, 2006

hey “the management,” Pavement’s “Range Life” was neither a FUCK YOU or a SHOUT OUT – if you read the liner notes to the Crooked Rain reissue, SM says the line about the Pumpkins (and STP) was a throwaway line. It had the band laughing, he writes. He also joked that he’d always wanted to kick Billy Corgan’s ass (probably cuz he knows the 6-foot something Corgan would most likely kick his nuts in).

That line in “Range Life” to me, really reflects the jealousy Malkmus had at the mainstream success those two bands had, especially STP’s sudden success, as evident by the line “”i will agree theY DESERVE absolutely nothing
    nothing more than me.”

Anyway, don’t forget about Snow Patrol’s shoutout to Sufjan on their new single “Hands Down,” which actually not only finds the band requesting Sufjan, but an actual song of his (“Chicago”).

that hootie and the blowfish song where he name checks dylan and then steals a whole verse of dylan’s “idiot wind” has always bothered me. hootie shoulda been shot and killed for that.

  61. The mix from Art of the Mix that Angelica posted was (I think) in response to a long-standing “mix challenge” on that site.

About four years ago, I made a series of mix trades with an Art of the Mix regular, and one of the mixes he sent me was a “mix composed entirely of songs with shout outs.”

    Here it is:

“Julian, I’m a little bit older than you” – Courtney Love

That same Courtney Love album (America’s Sweetheart) also has “Zeppelin Song,” and I think maybe some other shout-outs too. It’s a great album. Really.

There’s the folk standard “I dreamed I saw Joe Hill last night,” – lyrics by Alfred Hayes – which Billy Bragg later turned into “I dreamed I saw Phil Ochs last night.”

Ochs wrote “Bound for Glory” for Woodie Guthrie, and the well-meaning but long-winded “Joe Hill.”

I also like Tobin Sprout’s nod to Syd Barrett in “Last man well known to kingpin”

    “Madcap laughs / Syd Barrett
The last man well known to Kingpin
    Madcap laughs / Syd Barrett
    But what’s in a name?”

An old smashing pumpkins demo called “If there is a god” references David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust:

And if there is a God
I know he likes to rock
    He likes his loud guitars
    His spiders from Mars

everyone else has posted so many, this was the only one i could think of that isnt already here!

Peter Schilling’s 1983 hit “Major Tom (Coming Home)” is pretty much just a retelling of David Bowie’s classic 1969 song “Space Oddity”.

  85. A shoutout to Milli Vanilli in Barenaked Ladies’ “Blame It On Me” =D

and Milli Vanilli told you to blame it on the rain but if you blame it on the rain, how can we begin?

  86. “Dostoevsky, FAB MORETTI, antiseptic, complimentary…”

    -Adam Green, “Carolina”

  87. Brakes- Heard About Your Band
    ‘coked-up arsehole/waiting for Liars/you shared a cab with Karen O/wo-wo, wo-wo-wo’ (later mentions of Electrelane and Sleater-Kinney)

    Moving Units- Unpersuaded
    ‘I remember/it was Television/that was playing/on that stranger’s Walkman’

    The Rapture- Killing
‘Killing with flange and with tape and with Hendrix’

probably lots of Moldy Peaches, though i can only think of ‘D2 Boyfriend’ at the moment.

    Bis- Action and Drama
‘Give me action and drama/give me 80′s Madonna’

“I said to Hank Williams: how lonely does it get?
    Hank Williams hasn’t answered yet
But I hear him coughing all night long
    A hundred floors above me
    In the Tower of Song”

    -Leonard Cohen
