Turns out Under Byen isn?t the only Band to Watch from Denmark. Meet Mew, the latest Nordic-export-cum-blogger-fave. Driving tom-tom crescendos and dramatic, soaring vocal-and-piano lines recall Sigur Rós, but it’s the prog-influenced drum-bass hookups and quick-turning passages that make Mew magic. And they rock hard live; we caught ‘em opening for Bloc Party both nights last week and were floored by their Danish power.

Here are two from Mew’s fourth (and most recent) release, And The Glass Handed Kites.

Mew – “Chinaberry Tree” (MP3 Link Expired)
Mew – “Why Are You Looking Grave?” (MP3 Link Expired)

All this awesomeness dripping from Denmark?? Must be ’cause it’s the happiest place on earth. And everybody knows that nothin’ says “good times” like melodramatic art-rock!

i don’t understand why everybody’s suddenly so a-buzz about Mew, their first album was released in like ’97.

    Well.
    Finding a band means twofold:
    1. I want to tell everyone I know that this is the most amazing band in the world!
    2. I want to keep them to myself once everybody realizes they’re great!

Don’t be ego – think of how hard the band’s been working all those years instead – that they’re finally out there… There will be new bands for you to “patent”…

  3. no, they don’t recall Sigur Rós musically… _perhaps_ with their fancy projection there’s a visual similarity.

  4. Denmark is indeed a very nice place to live :-) Not only because of the music, though we do have lots of very good bands here!

Frengers is a great album, i can’t really get into the new one though.

yep, Frengers ftw. this new one is a bit ropey.

For but one example of the sigur ros similarity, go to the three minute mark of ‘why are you looking grave’; those swelling drums and that piano coda (repeated in a higher octave for effect) is straight off of ()! but the rest of it is different enough for me to say that i LOVE it. it’s a nice way to be sigur ros inspired, unlike coldplay.

    The ex-girlfriend’s favorite band! :) :) :)

    :’(

But yeah. They’re pretty awesome. I hope they plan on doing some more extensive touring over here.

  11. I’m a big fan of both of their major release albums. Frengers is great, though it’s also more a compilation of their best stuff up until that point. And the Glass Handed Kites is a little more proggy and lyrically bizarre, but they’re Danish, so that’s cool. Really glad they finally are making a push stateside.

please don’t forget about Efterklang!!! they are great too!!!

Uh Oh…the pseudo Indie hipsters seem to have caught on to MEW, even though the band has been around for years. Saw them last night in LA.

Based on chops, there is no tighter “new” band out there right now. Go see for yourself.

i saw this band being interviewed on a music channel late last year. they were being marketed as a “band to watch out for.” i didn’t know they’ve been around for years. however, they do seem to show a lot of promise.

  15. i saw them monday night in denver opening up for bloc party and i would almost be willing to say they stole the show….i thought it was a chick singing but it turned out that it wasn’t…amazing live, i took some photos and mp3s….

Why do insist on posting pictures of me on your website?

Mew are pretty ace, & it’s kind of interesting now that they’re garnering attention even though they’ve been around for quite awhile…

anybody can look up when their debut came out on wikipedia. frankly, you dont all live in denmark, so all of you saying everyones late to the party are more than a little full of shit.

It’s about time they’ve gotten some recognition… I never understood why they didn’t get any hype from the indie kids for so long.

Half The World Watcing Me is their best, IMO. Almost all the versions of the songs on Frengers on this album were done better the first time around.

re: Sigur Ros, “Drown” off the Apocalypso 7″ is very Sigur Ros-esque.

I remember buying their single “She’ll be home for Christmas” at Virgin for $.99 2 years ago.
Where the hell were you guys?

  21. Mew have four albums, the earliest of which was released some time ago but who cares, it’s never too late to discover a good band and it won’t make one any less of a fan either. (:

  22. glenn  |   Posted on Aug 3rd, 2006

is it just me or does this sound a lot like Billy Corgan’s solo album? especially the second song… that’s where he got all those dramatics

  23. They’re definately mainstream here in Denmark, so that means that us cool danish indie kids don’t like them at all.

The Zookepers Boy and Special are killer tracks, though.

And what about Kashmir? Also Radiohead-ish but I think they’re more consistent than Mew.
