Salon has a announced a free-MP3 playlist contest. They’re looking for the best mix “to go along with that ritual of summer, grilling things over an open flame.” The rules:

  • All tracks must be both free and legal and must be posted on the artist’s Web site, on a label’s Web site or on a legitimate MP3 site like Better Propaganda, Insound or Epitonic — and you’re welcome to dip into the Audiofile archives to find some of your material, but we’ll be more excited about playlists that bring in new material.
  • Include the artist name, track title, album title and download link for every track.
  • Each playlist must have a title and a description (of about 100 words). As with last year’s contest, we’ll be judging the concept and description (almost!) as heavily as the playlist itself.
  • Each playlist should be between 10 and 15 tracks.
  • No streams! Only MP3 downloads.
  • You can’t include your own music, and be sparing with music by friends — include friends’ tracks only if you must!
  • Submissions should be sent to bbqsongs@gmail.com with the subject line “BBQ Songs.”
  • The deadline for submissions is 5 p.m. EDT, Monday, Aug. 21.

  • Audiofiler Thomas Bartlett kicks things off with his own BBQ playlist.

    I’d wanna include:

    But that breaks the rules.

Tell us your picks. (Salon’s prize for the best playlist is “glory,” so we’ll match that.)

Incidentally, it’s too fucking hot to stand over a grill. Feel free to give us an ice cream mix instead (only rule is no Sarah McLachlin).

Grandma, Tell Me About the Time You Slept With the President
As I watched Mimi Alford make the media rounds, I couldn't help think about another women who was infatuated with our 35th president. She told me about it in the fall of 1981. We were sitting in a cozy, upscale Italian restaurant in Westwood. At the next ...
Whitney Houston dies: Mariah Carey and other celebrities remember the legend

Not to go off on one here (but I will)… This perfectly exemplifies the complete and utter downside of the iPod, as anyone who has a summer share (or even been to a party in the last 2 years) can attest: It means every jackass can now transport his/her ENTIRE SHITE-TASTE BLEEDING RECORD COLLECTION everywhere they go! And then get drunk and fight with other taste-deprived two-years-behind-the-curve hipster f*cks over that coveted Monster cable that attaches yer Pod to the house stereo. “NO, I gotta PLAY something!!!” Ughh.

Used to be there was the one or two people who cared enough (or knew enough, or had the newest shit) to pack a few CDs or make a mixtape for the road trip or whatevs. Those days, people, are over. Welcome to your new music hell. Sponsored by Apple.

Mine would definitely have “Sunday Girl” on it. Also, “Alone Again Or” by Calexico and the New Pornographers’ “Your Daddy Don’t Know” sound very summery to me.

I would definitely include rap songs that refer to being up in my grill, but other than that, . Glory is overrated!
