Lindsey Buckingham finally releases a new album, Under The Skin, on 10/3. He tells USA Today
[It's] kind of a reduction. There are basically no drums, very little bass. On a musical level, I’ve been trying to distill things. This is the best time in my life, and that’s a great thing to be able to say when you’re 56, and didn’t become a father till you were 48.
He plans another ?more rocking? album next year and (finally) a solo U.S. tour. ?It’s a turnaround, time-frame-wise, for someone who’s been sort of the Terrence Malick of rock,? he admits.
I’d say. I’ve been waiting for a follow-up to Out Of The Cradle for 14 years. Good news about the drums too, ’cause the programmed beats on his last album were sorta lame. But give this guy a Rick Turner Model 1 and his Travis picking will blow your mind.
(And here’s the song you know from that Chevy Chase movie…)
Sorry, geeked out there for a bit. We now return to your regularly scheduled indie rock. I hope there’s at least one Buckingham fan out there. Although my level of enthusiasm is probably not healthy.

Why apologize for “geeking out”? No doubt the man has massive skills, which is more I can say about 99% of the acts discussed here–nobody will be talking about Tapes n Tapes 30 years from now
Yesssss.
Thank you for being the first to report this. Buckingham’s half of Tusk is one of the finest moments in all of mainstream pop.
nice….when’s the mac gonna rock again?
Amen. My favorite TP performance is the version of “Walls” with Lindsay Buckingham too. Man is a genius.
You are not alone. This is truly great news. I have heard rumours that he has scrapped several albums over the years. I remember reading an interview with R.E.M where the journalist followed Peter Buck around for a few days. One of Buck’s ‘errands’ was going to a studio to give Lindsey Buckingham some feedback on his new recordings. The journalist made a point of commenting on how stressed Buckingham looked and how he was manically scribbling down Buck’s comments on a notepad. Seemed a little bit sad…
Oh man, I’m so glad the ‘gum likes Lindsey Buckingham too! That guy has super mad-totally bad guitar skills.
“Big Love” is a great Buckingham track.
> nice….when’s the mac gonna rock again?
Honestly, I am so disappointed w/ Apple customer service. It took them a week to get me the RMA # to send back the MacBook. Hopefully I’ll get a new one by the end of next week.
Oh, you meant Fleetwood Mac. Carry on…
Luke stole my comment. But I will add that Buckingham is around the top of my “hot old rockers” list. Oh yeah.
That last FM album was surprisingly spot-on, though Christine was definitely missing from the mix.
stereogum knows about rick turner guitars! i had a rick turner bass for a while but it was kind of lame
Great news! Only thing that would make this better would have been an mp3 of “Time Bomb Town”, haven’t been able to track that down.
“holiday road” just might be the perfect pop song.
Best news I’ve read all day.
And agree with the drums comment. I love “Out of the Cradle,” but every time I listen to it, I can’t help thinking how much better it would have sounded with actual drums instead of computerized ones.
I applaud you for posting “Holiday Road.”
I always wanted one of his signature guitars, they are so unique looking. And maybe it will give me super guitar picking powers.

Can’t wait! Love, love love him.
LB’s “Go Insane” really is a truly insane record. That suite devoted to Dennis Wilson? Brilliant. In Venice is Sinking, all we listen to is Fleetwood Mac and Fleetwood Mac-affiliated projects. We cover “What Makes You Think You’re The One.” It has such a killer drum part. I love playing it.
HUGE Buck fan here and cannot wait to get my grubby hands on this album (Happy birthday, Lindsey, indeed) and go see him on tour!
Mike, I agree, Time Bomb Town is one of my fave songs.
Holiday Road is the song that started my fandom 5 years ago.
This is FANTASTIC news. I’m a huge Lindsey Buckingham fan (and he was my first rock and roll crush). I’ve been waiting for a new solo album from him for so long. I really hope this is as good, if not better, than Out of the Cradle.
At this rate his next album will be when he’s what, 70? Pick up the speed LB, you’re too talented to let it sit!
Can’t wait for the Mac 2020 tour when they are all 70…
Man, i got reminded of how much i used to love the single from teh last album… “Waiting for something something”? The one with the video that was like a roller-coaster ride.
Shit, post that one mofo. Love that track.
-G.
If you get a chance, there is usually a number of tracks from something called The Gift of Screws which did get mastered, but never released, and a few of the songs from this release became tracks on Say You Will. I snagged a lossless one from Bittorrent last year that was sourced from a CD evidently cut from the master. There was a VH1 “Behind the Music” from about that time that was aired only once, when Gift of Screws was shelved for the last Fleetwood Mac. Lindsey was messing around with delay pedals to give a percussive sound on a number of tracks– notably Red Rover.
I will certainly try to see him on tour. The last three times I saw Fleetwood Mac, he was certainly the driving force of the show with his manic guitar soloing. Lindsey is one of the guitar greats in addition to being one of the best songwriters in recent history. In my opinion, of course.
Mike
juepucta- that song is called “Countdown.” It’s my favorite of his solo songs, and not just because he looks so hot in the video that it gives me a total girl boner. Awesome track.

This is the best news ever for me. Over the past 2-3 years I have totally fallen in love with his music. To me, he is Fleetwood Mac and I adore his solo stuff. I will do everything I can to see him on concert. I am so excited. Lindsey rocks (and yes, he’s hot for his age as well).

awesome to see you post this. ive been on such a fleetwood mac kick recently. cant get his songs out of my head, especially ‘second hand news.’ and tusk just fucking rocks.
I am so thrilled you guys love LB. To everyone else: if you like music and you don’t own “Out Of The Cradle” run out and buy it.
Yeah Lindsey is awesome
I love all his songs on Tusk and I love Out of the Cradle. And he isn’t just hot for his age people, he is just hot, period. Can’t wait for the new album(s).
And Hayley if you are reading this – I used to post on the Ledge (I contributed to the Songbird song interp) – I’m Mary Alice …ring any bells?
I can’t register there with my gmail or hotmail accounts, appreantly, so I don’t know how to re-register. I’m magroves @ gmail if you want to shoot me a line. –Mary Alice
I remember hearing “Holiday Road” when I saw NL’s Vacation at the drive-in as a kid and really liked it. I got the soundtrack. I also got the “Beverly Hills Cop” soundtrack at the same time.
I remember the video for “Go Insane” freaked me out a lot. Isn’t he like trapped inside a TV or something at the end?
… girl boner?
FUCK YES LINDSEY BUCKINGHAM!
(and he gives me a girl boner, too.)
The first half of both “Law and Order” and “Go Insane” are terrific. The second half not so much, but nobody’s perfect. Buckingham is pretty damn great, and the songs I’ve heard from “Gift of Screws” prove he’s still got it.
Can someone send me GIFT OF SCREWS mp3s?
wow, i dont know whats better: this new Buckingham news or the fact that so many stereogum readers are such LB fans. im stoked…and im under 30! god bless the mac.
Scott, has anyone sent you those Gift of Screws mp3s? If not, let me know and I can send you what I have.
I got Gift Of Screws here: http://www.buckinghamnicks.net/
Scott, have you heard You and I part I?
can someone re-post the yousend it
of the Countdown video?
thanks
WOW-great site Scott and timely too… Under my Skin released shortly.
Cannot access Holiday Road from this site. Love the song. Any suggestions for saving it?
Thanks in advance,
Dan.
Nix that last request…
Persistence pays off-SUCCESS!!!!!!!
Would like to have your opinion and maybe a download on Lindseys unique song off (25 years together-Cassette/CD) “Teen Beat” though.
WOW-great anticipation of Lindsey’s NEW CD has me in stitches.
Thanks again, Dan
Go to Lindsey’s website and listen to 5 tracks from the new CD. Yes, its very much stripped down from his last efforts, but every bit as vocally lush as anything he has done. These tracks show off a great tunesmith at work. Unbelievably good. Oh….and yes, there is great guitar work! (of course).
Probably the best guitarist i have had the pleasure of seeing live, and not a half bad singer either.Big Love live is incredible.i have tried and failed many a time to play tht competently.infact i love all his stuff.
If you guys dig his stuff, try to get ahold of some of the old Buckingham-Nicks (1973) recordings. Quality reproductions are hard to come by, but it’s some of his best stuff in my opinion.
