The Killers’ forthcoming Sam’s Town is a hot topic on Stereogum. And some of you ask why we blog about them so much if we hate them. WE DON’T HATE THEM. We just think Brandon’s ego needed to be taken down a notch. And I believe we’ve sufficiently ridiculed him for his uncouth emo beefs and delusions of Bossdom.

So let’s focus on the music. Reader Nicole was kind enough to share two live cuts from the band’s MySpace-sponsored Las Vegas show on Wednesday. Now you can judge based on the merits of the music … well, as much as one can judge from a pretty shitty quality bootleg. But I figure there are enough people out there curious to hear the new stuff.

    You’re wrong and retarded.

But then, I’m a dick, so what’s it matter.

  3. I saw them last night at POpscene in SF and I was blown away. Can’t wait for this album!

  4. The quality isn’t that great, but the songs are far from bad. I’m happy I pre-ordered the album on itunes.

  5. I’m not going to lie, I like the Killers. Duck and cover time…

  6. Killers rule.

  7. Um. I really like “When You Were Young,” but I wish it were a demo, and were secretly going to be even longer and more bombastic on record.

    Um.

  8. I don’t want to feel anyone’s bones. Ew.

I loved loved the 80s synth theme of Hot Fuss, so I’ve been pretty nervous about their new Springsteen sound. (Sorry, but The Boss does nothing for me.)
I’ve been listening to “When You Were Young” more though and I’m getting used to it.

  10. matt  |   Posted on Aug 25th, 2006

i agree his ego needs to kept in check, but they still write great pop songs.

  11. when you were young is a horrible song. how much does the label pay you to blog about them?

  12. finn  |   Posted on Aug 25th, 2006

brandon flowers’s ego has not been haunting us for a while now. i’m guessing the other band members finally had him exorcised.

“bones” seem to be a good song… especially the part when he sings “don’t you want to take a swing at me?” OK, i misheard that one. but wouldn’t it be more interesting if those were the actual words?

“when you were young” has totally grown on me. and the mustache too. i hope i’m not the only one.

  13. cafee  |   Posted on Aug 25th, 2006

Killers rule!!!!! The video for “when you were young” is beautiful, really cool story line………..great song.

  14. I love their new stuff. There are vids for Bones, Sam’s Town, Bling (Confessions of a King), and My List (all from the performance in Vegas the other night) on YouTube. If anyone is interested.

  15. Sounds good, even in the shitty quality. Can’t wait!

  16. omg-er  |   Posted on Aug 26th, 2006

    Finally!!

Finally, some other stereogum readers actually appreciate the Killers’ talent rather than be asses and just say stupid things about Brandon Flowers. SO WHAT if he has a big ego, can you blame him, he is after all an international superstar.

  17. Soooooooooo over-rated.

I wish Paul Westerberg was starting out right now.

  18. Low Companion  |   Posted on Aug 28th, 2006

A friend of mind pointed something about the new single & after he said it, I realized just how spot on it was. He said, “if you listened to this and 80s-era Meatloaf back-to-back, would you know the song had changed?”

  19. Roger  |   Posted on Aug 30th, 2006

“I miss the old Killers?” Based on ONE album? You’re wrong and retarded.

The new album is going to be amazing. I’d have an ego if i was the frontman for one of the best bands there is! Maybe instead of trying to pick apart Brandon Flowers, you guys should try listening to the music!!!

  26. i got the album today its a good follow up to Hot Fuss, different sound but it grows on you the more you listen to it

Awesome album! Listen to all songs carefully and then judge them.

  30. rick  |   Posted on Oct 9th, 2006

    1. I do like the new album.
    2. The new album doesn’t sound like Springsteen. A few songs have Tom Petty influences.
    3. They did rip off bits and pieces (intentional or not) from all the great acts of the 80′s. A lot of the vocals sound like U2 and The Cure. I also hear bits of Peter Gabriel and Bowie scattered throughout. Also the Beatles (“We hope you’ve enjoyed the stay”)
    4. “Bones” sounds like a Danny Elfman Oingo Boingo song. The topic, the horns, the keyboard riffs. It’s all there. That and Tim Burton is doing the video for the song. Kind of scary as Danny has done the majority of Burton’s film scores.

You boys write music that is timeless. The lyrics are for everyone…and the music ROCKS! I’m so proud that you’re giving sold-out shows world-wide because you’ve worked really hard and have grown so much. How much fun was “Hot Fuss”? The name says it all, and now “Sam’s Town” adds another facet to your talents. Dave, you know I love your guitar on “Read My Mind,” and Brandon’s play with vocals in “For Reasons Unknown,” are comfortably reminiscent of Robert Smith’s. Very bold and real. Thank you.
    Cheers,

Hey, “Read My Mind” is a hot song. It’s so hot, I can’t get it outta my mind. Stay with it, Killers.

    Kudos to Lici n’ Alex.
