Surprisingly passionate response to the news that Nickel Creek broke up. But even if you’re not remotely into bluegrass, you might be curious to hear Chris’s How to Grow a Woman from the Ground for its White Stripes and Strokes covers. Here’s the latter.

  1. He and his new band played a solid two hours the other night. Great stuff, and the closing cover of “Morning Bell” was amazing.

The full record is streaming at CMT, BTW:

Would love to hear the former!

Amazing. I love music. And going from rock to bluegrass and having the song still kick ass is one of the reasons why.

  4. Reasons why? Others have excuses. I have my reasons why.

Okay, this track isn’t bad. But goddamnit Chris Thile, get back together with the old band. Sniffle sniff.

  5. nickel creek did a cover of pavement’s “spit on a stranger” on their 2nd album

  6. wow, good job chris. i’ve been a casual fan of nickel creek over the years – just beautiful music. wish him luck on his solo projects!

  7. weird, i saw this guy Tom Brusseau play last night and he did ‘how to grow a woman from the ground’and he’d mentioned Nickel Creek but i’d assumed it was his song cause it’s also on his album too which i bought after the show cause he’s GREAT. so yeah…

The original is waaaaay better. Seriously. Heart in a Cage is not meant to be a folksy song.

  9. Chris is pretty fool proof with me. I don’t care for the Strokes (I think they’re kinda overrated) but I like this song a lot.

Thile is a virtuoso…and it seems that he is really coming into his own as a crossover-talent now that NC has broken up.

This cover is great. “Spit On A Stranger” comes nowhere near this. Thanking.

I’ve been playing the shit out of this song since you posted it, much thanks. I think it’s brilliant. Guess you kinda have to dig some bluegrass to really appreciate it. Can I get a shout out for Old Crow?

    Wow! That was good! Brilliant!

  14. First off everybody, Nickel Creek went on haitus, they didn’t “break up”. There is a difference. Second, Chris Thile’s new cd is amazing.

I think that it is a shame that such great, pure, clean and decent music could be ruined by such SHAMLESS profanity —–Sickening
