First off, congratulations to Darren W., Larry F., and Matt J. (check your email, Matt!), winners of our Pet Sounds Vinyl Reissue contest. You guys can peel that shrinkwrap just in time to gear up for six shows in November featuring Brian Wilson, Al Jardine, and an extensive backing band performing the classic album in its entirety. What an anniversary!
And in case you haven’t been keeping up with the iTunes Pet Sounds Podcasts, the latest installment covers “God Only Knows,” the lynchpin in many of your arguments defending Brian’s masterpiece. Great sound bites in that Podcast, including praise for Carl Wilson’s gorgeous vocal lead, Paul McCartney quotes, and discussion of the scale tones Brian put in the bass (for the music geeks among you).

Darren W., I know him, I know him!

Yeah really. I went and read the “comments” left by the “winners” and I would say they were pretty uninspired picks. I mean, Darren W. posted his comment six times! I guess that stands for something? The others were just odd — someone was born while ‘Pet Sounds’ was playing? Wow.. very insightful enough to win the contest. Hey!, I was in my mother’s womb during the recording of Jackson Browne’s live opus, ‘Running On Empty’!! Will Stereogum hook me up with a vinyl copy of that!? I thought the whole point of the contest was to comment on John’s original comment? None of the winners achieved that. Disappointing.
For my money – the clear winner (at least one of them) was Jehu. How could you not ignore that comment!?
The winners were chosen at random, by our handy, dandy random number generator (which we made sure to mention up front). I made sure not to count repeat entries! There were some amazing and insightful comments, for sure, but if we were gonna judge ‘em on merit, well, it’d take a panel of neutral and detached arbiters lots and lots of time!
Oopies… You are absolutely right. My bad.
Still.. Jehu deserved a copy for his comment alone.
I <3 these podcasts all day at work. Love the Band of Horses KEXP live recording as well.
