Bands like Sonic Youth have helped define the indie scene for decades. What does “indie” mean to you? How would you define what is ?indie? today? What does that term mean to you and do you think the ideals that guide it are still around today? What does “indie” look like to you? Send us your thoughts, photographs and video.

No, that’s not Stereogum asking. It’s CNN. Part of their new “you do the work for us” marketing campaign.

What does indie look like to us? Our balls on Wolf Blizter’s head!

The Kids Are All Right
Ms. Tharp, now 70 and a grandmother, has long been known for her iconoclastic works, which date back to 1965 and range from stark cerebral dances to grander ballet spectacles. Hers is hardly a name associated with ballets made with children in mind.

  1. At least they used a band like Sonic Youth for an example and didn’t call some flavor of the month pop-rock band indie.

indie is becoming something i cannot identify with, its (emgh eh cough cough ch cha cha) commerical. sonic youth (and lots more but not all classified indie bands) are not indie anymore they are an enlightened. they were indie they delt with the tugg an pull of coattail riders and the like and still seem to me (person who has never met them and even i did wouldn’t really know much about them)to be down to earth individuals, who sure may enjoy a condor egg omlet from time to time.

indie is out undie is in. for those determined enough to let their egos stay out of the music.

Was that the “indie” Sonic Youth when they were signed to DGC or Interscope? I can’t keep this shit straight.

  4. Indie looks like the central panel of Hieronymus Bosch’s Garden of Earthly Delights but with better haircuts.

Or at least it does round my way. There’s no need to have the bar so low.

how do you send a picture or a clip of something that’s so underground and cool, the hipsters don’t even know about it yet…

  7. does anyone see a campaign of disinformation being sent to CNN materializing, like, something to really clown these squares? I think a statement that’s tantamount to “we don’t give a shit about DIY music or culture, just trying to capitalize on a dumbass youth market” is deserving of seditious shenanigans.

  8. I think “indie” is really just a catch all that means anything other than top 40 at this point. It really doesn’t describe anything. But hell, even I can’t help but use it.

  9. Did anybody else take that “How Indie Are You?” quiz on CNN.com the other day? I only got 9 out of 10 but I bet they automatically subtracted a point because I was taking a quiz about how indie I was on CNN.com.
