Now that we know what Brits wanna hear when they’re dead, we’re curious what the living are listening to. The busy pollsters at NME contacted a cross-section of the UK’s student body in an effort to uncover their “favourite” dancefloor anthems. Here’s the Top Ten:
1. “I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor” – Arctic Monkeys
2. “Mr Brightside” – The Killers
3. “I Predict A Riot” – Kaiser Chiefs
4. “Take Me Out” – Franz Ferdinand
5. “This Charming Man” – The Smiths
6. “Hounds Of Love” – The Futureheads
7. “Naïve” – The Kooks
8. “Last Nite” – The Strokes
9. “Banquet” – Bloc Party
10. “Love Will Tear Us Apart” – Joy Division
Someone needs to tell them that it’s just not cool to like new-wave and post-punk anymore. A bit closer to home, then: What songs would America’s student body annoint as their favorite tracks? Here’s an entirely unscientific postulate, based on today’s US iTunes Top 10 Songs:
1. “How To Save A Life” – The Fray
2. “Chasing Cars” – Snow Patrol
3. “Smack That” – Akon
4. “Lips Of An Angel” – Hinder
5. “Chain Hang Low” – Jibbs
6. “White & Nerdy” – “Weird Al” Yankovic
7. “SexyBack” – Justin Timberlake
8. “Money Maker” – Ludacris
9. “Call Me When You’re Sober” – Evanescence
10. “Too Little, Too Late” – JoJo
Actually, fuck what we said about post-punk. It’s awesome. And hey kids, don’t forget to fill out those study-abroad applications!

study abroad huh.
A more representative — and arguably better, if only because Hinder ranks lower and The Fray didn’t make the cut — list for US students is probably BigChampagne’s list of most-shared music files:
1 Justin Timberlake SexyBack
2 Cassie Me & U
3 Pussycat Dolls Buttons
4 Fergie London Bridge
5 Jibbs Chain Hang Low
6 Ne-Yo Sexy Love
7 Young Dro Shoulder Lean
8 Hinder Lips Of An Angel
9 The Game It’s Okay (One Blood)
10 Sean Paul Give It Up to Me
the strokes… yayyyyyy.
if you use the super scienterrific tool that is facebook’s “pulse” feature, you arrive at the following music as being people’s favorite. (presumably this is all time favorite rather than what they’re listening to right now.)
[how the hell is jack johnson number one? actually how do any of the top three beat the beatles?]
Music
1. Jack Johnson
2. Coldplay
3. DMB
4. The Beatles
5. Green Day
6. Led Zeppelin
7. The Killers
8. Fall Out Boy
9. Red Hot Chili Peppers
10. Sublime
Those damn Brits always have to be so much cooler…
….& usually have the better music taste.
Another reason I wish I was british.
*sigh*
that list is why am i studying abroad next semester
No. The British are not cool. Remember, they were the country that managed to put “Axel F” by Crazy Frog on the top of the charts. That automatically deprives them of coolness.
fuck. i would go to clubs a LOT more often if they were playing shit like that.
I feel the British picks more. But the iTunes list is dead-on if you’re talking about high school students–except you have to put SexyBack up a few spots. The Fray are HUGE amongst teenage girls, it seems, and just about everyone I know has an opinion on “SexyBack”. I hear it referenced every day. For shame, for shame.
I haven’t actually met anyone who digs “Chain Hang Low” or wtf ever it is…most seem to agree that it’s dumb.
Um, I actually am a study abroad student in the UK now and that study is really untrue. That’s more like the songs students listen to in general, but not in clubs. They play all the same old shit that’s to be expected in American clubs. The only exception is if you go to a club that ONLY plays rock/punk/indie music, then it’s stuff like that list. My friends always drag me to those stupid dance clubs that play ‘Hips Don’t Lie’ and ‘SexyBack’ on constant rotation and I’ve requested Bloc Party, figuring they’d love to play one of their songs, and the DJs didn’t even know who they are. It angers me.
hahahahaahhahaha
the uk list describes everything they played on indie night at the glasgow based club, abc.
